I bought mine in 1999 for $5,000 ..It was my 1st car.. I had no CLUE what a Great car it Really was
Totally agree on the cosmetic vs mechanical emphasis. That applies to all models. So much easier to sort mechanicals.
I echo Pierre’s comments as a ten-year owner. I had two engine failures. The first was caused by the installation of a superseded timing chain tensioner, an old part lying on shelf somewhere that M-B redesigned. The second failure was a result of the first rebuild. The M-B trained tech I used put in a new timing chain that was one link too long. He also did not torque the crankshaft to 240ft/lbs. No keyway. My father-in-law, a 35-year certified MB tech, put it back together properly. Valve adjustments are Jaguar-esque. Not everyone knows how to do it properly.
on a car that hasn't had them in a while...they can take up to 11 hours with a chain tensioner install.
I got my 16V for $5,000 with a Evo 2 replica body kit. Everything said in this video is true!
I agree: keep 16v cars as they left the factory...I see some with different rims but these were a part of the effort that M-B made to reduce to cd...I must do my valve-lash soon (:
One of my favorite jobs!
I bought my mercedes 2.3.16 V in 1987 for over $43,400 . Great car on dry roads and a death trap in the snow 1/4" or even on wet roads it would do a 180. The 560 SEL I had (1987) also was terrible For safety I ended up buying a 16 Valve AWD Subaru Legacy and now have a Lexus 460 AWD and a BMW 750!iL X drive NO More Mercedes for me as even the 560 SL was not that good on tight turns
The 1987 190E 2.3 16 V had the head gasket replaced THREE times by Manhattan Mercedes plus the AC was repaired over 4 times still under warranty with the transmission twice being repaired
the 201 was never that great, and they were pretty bad in the snow...but your new cars are boring.
I’ve seen individual throttle body kits from an British company for the 2.3-16. Do they have much of an affect on HP? Thanks.
They do.....but they add so much complication and they allow so much unfiltered air into the engine that it's not worth it
Thanks for the video. I do have another question. I understand the US version is de-tuned with lower compression ratio, restricted exhaust, and a different fuel pump relay. These items seem simple and doable to me. So the question is is it possible to Euro spec a US cosworth engine?
Hello Reginald Ramirez,
I am one of the moderators for the Pierre Hedary Mercedes Benz channel and I saw your comment. It seems as if you'd benefit from personalized attention for the problem. We have provided a way for owners to get the help they need. If it's okay, please visit the website: www.ClassicBenzSOS.com so you can schedule a call from Pierre Hedary. --LauraH
it was...9.5 :1 compression, and with a catalyst in the exhaust, as well as a 3.27 rear axle ratio
Thanks for the response. I really appreciate it. I did check ClassicBenzSOS but I received an error page.
Hello Reginald Ramirez, This is LauurH again. I tested the link just now and it worked fine. If you still need help, I've included it here: www.classicbenzsos.com/
Lots of other minor issues. Ignition also different. Cat needs to be removed but 1st check if it's legal in your state. If go megasquirt and spark u will pickup more power than the euro.
You're the guy from Vin Wiki!
yes, i am
Very nice to meet you. My 16v has 112k miles on it. Unfortunately the car history isn't cristal clear, the KJetronic injection system is a mess and it hasn't been in driving condition for more than a year.
