    I used to have a set of AP Exhaust MSL mufflers on my 68 Dodge Coronet with dual exhaust. The mufflers had no drone and sounded great. The mufflers actually gave a correct and authentic Mopar sound. The sound that you would hear on a stock Dodge Charger R/T, Plymouth Roadrunner. The exhaust note sounds just like the Bullitt Charger or The 70 Roadrunner on the Brewster Mc Cloud movie with Shelly Duvall. If you heard these cars and the exhaust notes you would know what I am referring to. Summit Racing actually sells these mufflers on their website.

    Just a note, the issue I’ve had on my car is any material packed muffler I’ve used (borla, magnaflow etc…) significantly increases in volume after some heavy abuse. It’s a 700whp pd blown car so it’s creating some pressure and heat in there but with anything I’ve tried, the volume nearly doubles after a few dozen 1/4 passes and street abuse. It’s usually proportionate meaning the quieter mufflers still end up quieter, but I’m always disappointed in the end when the car is twice as loud as it was when I first installed them. Just something to think about.

    • @papasmurf2k3
      @papasmurf2k3  13 дней назад

      Yup! Any material packed muffler will be its absolute quietest when its brand new. It only gets louder from there. Chambered mufflers are generally more reliable and consistent.

    Dang, that MSL 70065 still pretty loud for my ears at 79 db while cruising. My stock muffler in my 2013 CRV does a 75db at full rev. Anyway, maybe not an oranges to oranges comparison but my two cents. That 70020 model would be the one I would go for. Tiny bit more quieter approaching a stock muffler Db setup from inside the car. Super interesting comparison video for people wanting to preserve their inner peace and quiet while driving lol. Interestingly, my engine is louder than my exhaust at a 70db with the hood down at startup. A cool video would be on ‘how to quiet down engine noise from the hood’. 😂

      Thanks for the feedback! And yeah, I imagine the 70065 would be louder without a turbo. That Silentone series is much quieter.
      I probably should have cut them open or developed some kind of test to see how they compared in terms of flow. Oh well.

    I’ve had an AP Silentone 3” inlet dual 2.5” outlet on my GMC Sierra for about 3 years now. It sounds the exact same today as it did the day it was installed. At idle it’s basically a stock sound, but at interstate speeds it has a slightly higher pitched drone. Not unpleasant, and sounds great outside the truck, but I’m about to install a couple resonators coming off the back of the muffler to see if I can’t control that pitch slightly.

    • @papasmurf2k3

      Thanks for the feedback. Drone is a fickle mistress indeed. There's lots of videos out there on youtube talking about the science behind it, and what to do to try and conquer it... and most are only semi-successful. Gives you a whole new respect for the engineers that design the systems for the OEMs.

      I've been happy with the AP exhaust MSL maximum. If you have a local muffler shop, I'd see if they have anything laying around that you can try out just like I did (remove factory muffler, install a couple new ones) to make sure you're getting what you want. If they don't have them, you might have to just order a couple different ones like me. They are cheap enough :)

    with the quieter mufflers did you notice power loss or longer for the turbo to boost? Was the added exhaust back pressure an issue with the turbo. I have a Celica with a Turbo 3SGTE and a Magnaflow straight muffler but I hate the drone at cruising speed. I'm looking for a quiet muffler without sacrificing the turbo power very much.

    • @papasmurf2k3
      @papasmurf2k3  2 года назад +1

      I didn't notice any difference at all, but my system on the way back to the muffler is pretty open. 3" downpipe that necks down to 2.5" pipe somewhere around mid-car, all the way back to the muffler.
      Drone can be a bit tricky to tune out though... sometimes you have to put a resonator of a certain size into a certain spot within your exhaust system. I'd start with a better/quieter muffler and go from there though... you can always add a resonator later if you need it.

    Is it true the bigger the (chambered) muffler is, the more chambered deep/bassy sound it will be? Also, does the size of the tip play a factor?

    • @papasmurf2k3
      @papasmurf2k3  2 года назад +1

      For the size of the muffler - not necessarily... as a rule of thumb, bigger is usually quieter, but doesn't have to be. It depends a lot on the internal design of it as well. How many redirects the exhaust has to go through, how many baffles, how large/many perforations the pipe has, etc. This is why it would be nice if there was some kind of standardized test :)
      The size of the tip plays a small role... like if its made like a megaphone. The size of the tail pipe itself plays a small role too, but not as much. A good quick fix for noise (at least externally) would be a turn-down. They often sell those at race tracks that have a decibel limit.

      @@papasmurf2k3 appreciate the response. Had my full exhaust system (headers, no cat) on my 8th civic and it drones pretty bad inside cabin. My ears literally hurt after driving for just an hour at around 80-90 kph highway. I do have a 12" resonator and decided to place another 18" in the middle. It did quieten the drone inside as well as overall loudness outside but I must say still uncomfortable on long drives.
      Any recommendations? I'm planning to install a chambered muffler now. I'm thinking 3 chambers with lots of fiber glass / or any sound absorbing materials (the muffler would be fabricated). Do you think it would be enough? I would still have my headers (no cats) and the 2 resonators mentioned btw

    • @papasmurf2k3
      @papasmurf2k3  2 года назад +2

      @@tutuy-mm2be I tend to stay away from glass packs. Their performance degrades as they fill with carbon and/or break apart from heat. You didn't mention what muffler was currently on there, but that will most likely be the biggest area you can improve. Also, this probably sounds obvious, but make sure your tip is actually exiting outside your bumper. I've seen a lot that seem to blow exhaust partially into the bumper, eventually warping it and causing a lot of sound to come back into the cabin.

    • @tutuy-mm2be
      @tutuy-mm2be 2 года назад

      @@papasmurf2k3 my apologies. My current muffler is a fabricated s-type. The pipe inside is not straight through but rather curved a little like an s-shaped.
      I'm planning to swap to a "real" chambered muffler. The one with multiple chambers (i think in the US its commonly called as turbo muffler?) I will also make sure the tail pipe goes a little further back from the rear bumper. Probably half an inch?
      From your experience, how much of that would help in lessening the drone inside cabin? Still kinda bad / loud at 2k RPM.

    • @papasmurf2k3
      @papasmurf2k3  2 года назад

      @@tutuy-mm2be "S" mufflers are glorified "straight through" designs. A chambered muffler will go a long way at reducing overall noise and should help a lot with drone, depending on which one you get. Unfortunately they are all different, which is the very reason I did the testing in this video :p
