Just a note, the issue I’ve had on my car is any material packed muffler I’ve used (borla, magnaflow etc…) significantly increases in volume after some heavy abuse. It’s a 700whp pd blown car so it’s creating some pressure and heat in there but with anything I’ve tried, the volume nearly doubles after a few dozen 1/4 passes and street abuse. It’s usually proportionate meaning the quieter mufflers still end up quieter, but I’m always disappointed in the end when the car is twice as loud as it was when I first installed them. Just something to think about.
Yup! Any material packed muffler will be its absolute quietest when its brand new. It only gets louder from there. Chambered mufflers are generally more reliable and consistent.
I used to have a set of AP Exhaust MSL mufflers on my 68 Dodge Coronet with dual exhaust. The mufflers had no drone and sounded great. The mufflers actually gave a correct and authentic Mopar sound. The sound that you would hear on a stock Dodge Charger R/T, Plymouth Roadrunner. The exhaust note sounds just like the Bullitt Charger or The 70 Roadrunner on the Brewster Mc Cloud movie with Shelly Duvall. If you heard these cars and the exhaust notes you would know what I am referring to. Summit Racing actually sells these mufflers on their website.
I like the Walker Quiet flow mufflers i have PN 21856 on my k10 chevy
Wish you tried the vibrant ones
Yeah unfortunately I had to call it at some point... I couldn't test EVERY muffler out there.
Great video
Firme
I wish this was a more popular idea. Thank you
Dang, that MSL 70065 still pretty loud for my ears at 79 db while cruising. My stock muffler in my 2013 CRV does a 75db at full rev. Anyway, maybe not an oranges to oranges comparison but my two cents. That 70020 model would be the one I would go for. Tiny bit more quieter approaching a stock muffler Db setup from inside the car. Super interesting comparison video for people wanting to preserve their inner peace and quiet while driving lol. Interestingly, my engine is louder than my exhaust at a 70db with the hood down at startup. A cool video would be on ‘how to quiet down engine noise from the hood’. 😂
Thanks for the feedback! And yeah, I imagine the 70065 would be louder without a turbo. That Silentone series is much quieter. I probably should have cut them open or developed some kind of test to see how they compared in terms of flow. Oh well.
Great video , wish you had the links in the description
Good call. I have no idea why I didn't include them to begin with. I just added them.
Sick
How in the world does a RUclips short get a commercial in it
They put a commercial in this?! Wtf?!
They all suck
Fourth lol
🤘
I’m in the same boat with my svt focus
Sounds like an exhaust leak at the headers
Turned out one of the pistons cracked a ring, and a chunk took out some of the piston skirt and fused itself to the bore ID.
Good
Walker quiet flow?
I'm not sure what kind of question this is, but if I remember correctly they were both more expensive and more difficult to obtain (backordered) at the time of making this video, so they weren't tested.
I had one on my truck and it was pretty quiet and supposedly flows better than stock. I didn't really notice any performance gains or losses using the butt dyno.
@@AreaThirteenThirteen Thanks for the info. Im stoked, I just got 2 im planning to doing a dual exhaust on my 89 town car. side note I last month I Roger Waters at madison square garden. It was dope
@@DannyNY Awesome!👍👍😎😎
I love my walker quiet flow single in dual out on my 05 ram
Nice video James. Very helpful for a similar exhaust project I have going on
Glad it could help!
Resonator plus hush muffler
You need to install a resonator to significantly reduce the loud exhaust sound
Resonators tend to help with drone and smoothing out spikes in noise for sure. I actually already had a resonator on this vehicle, but you're correct, a proper exhaust system should have a resonator.
Is it true the bigger the (chambered) muffler is, the more chambered deep/bassy sound it will be? Also, does the size of the tip play a factor?
For the size of the muffler - not necessarily... as a rule of thumb, bigger is usually quieter, but doesn't have to be. It depends a lot on the internal design of it as well. How many redirects the exhaust has to go through, how many baffles, how large/many perforations the pipe has, etc. This is why it would be nice if there was some kind of standardized test :) The size of the tip plays a small role... like if its made like a megaphone. The size of the tail pipe itself plays a small role too, but not as much. A good quick fix for noise (at least externally) would be a turn-down. They often sell those at race tracks that have a decibel limit.
@@papasmurf2k3 appreciate the response. Had my full exhaust system (headers, no cat) on my 8th civic and it drones pretty bad inside cabin. My ears literally hurt after driving for just an hour at around 80-90 kph highway. I do have a 12" resonator and decided to place another 18" in the middle. It did quieten the drone inside as well as overall loudness outside but I must say still uncomfortable on long drives. Any recommendations? I'm planning to install a chambered muffler now. I'm thinking 3 chambers with lots of fiber glass / or any sound absorbing materials (the muffler would be fabricated). Do you think it would be enough? I would still have my headers (no cats) and the 2 resonators mentioned btw
@@tutuy-mm2be I tend to stay away from glass packs. Their performance degrades as they fill with carbon and/or break apart from heat. You didn't mention what muffler was currently on there, but that will most likely be the biggest area you can improve. Also, this probably sounds obvious, but make sure your tip is actually exiting outside your bumper. I've seen a lot that seem to blow exhaust partially into the bumper, eventually warping it and causing a lot of sound to come back into the cabin.
@@papasmurf2k3 my apologies. My current muffler is a fabricated s-type. The pipe inside is not straight through but rather curved a little like an s-shaped. I'm planning to swap to a "real" chambered muffler. The one with multiple chambers (i think in the US its commonly called as turbo muffler?) I will also make sure the tail pipe goes a little further back from the rear bumper. Probably half an inch? From your experience, how much of that would help in lessening the drone inside cabin? Still kinda bad / loud at 2k RPM.
@@tutuy-mm2be "S" mufflers are glorified "straight through" designs. A chambered muffler will go a long way at reducing overall noise and should help a lot with drone, depending on which one you get. Unfortunately they are all different, which is the very reason I did the testing in this video :p
Gotta love the 240 ute
Thanks. Its a good bit cleaner now with a fresh paint job and new hood without a hole in it haha.
I need quiet because my subaru runs way too high up on the tach at highway speed...
My 240 in the video actually quiets down a bit up around 4,000 RPM. Its weird. But yeah, I had a 4.36 rear LSD in that thing and it just killed me on road trips. I just swapped a 3.9 in and love it.
with the quieter mufflers did you notice power loss or longer for the turbo to boost? Was the added exhaust back pressure an issue with the turbo. I have a Celica with a Turbo 3SGTE and a Magnaflow straight muffler but I hate the drone at cruising speed. I'm looking for a quiet muffler without sacrificing the turbo power very much.
I didn't notice any difference at all, but my system on the way back to the muffler is pretty open. 3" downpipe that necks down to 2.5" pipe somewhere around mid-car, all the way back to the muffler. Drone can be a bit tricky to tune out though... sometimes you have to put a resonator of a certain size into a certain spot within your exhaust system. I'd start with a better/quieter muffler and go from there though... you can always add a resonator later if you need it.
ممتاز جدا 👍 لتقليل الازعاج والتلوث الصوتي
شكرًا!
I’ve had an AP Silentone 3” inlet dual 2.5” outlet on my GMC Sierra for about 3 years now. It sounds the exact same today as it did the day it was installed. At idle it’s basically a stock sound, but at interstate speeds it has a slightly higher pitched drone. Not unpleasant, and sounds great outside the truck, but I’m about to install a couple resonators coming off the back of the muffler to see if I can’t control that pitch slightly.
Thanks for the feedback. Drone is a fickle mistress indeed. There's lots of videos out there on youtube talking about the science behind it, and what to do to try and conquer it... and most are only semi-successful. Gives you a whole new respect for the engineers that design the systems for the OEMs.
@@papasmurf2k3 I agree. Got my first car and stoked to do mods. On full exhaust now and drone is pretty bad starting around 2k rpm. I'm looking to do chambered muffler now as I no longer want my ears to suffer lol. Like what you said made me appreciate engineering behind stock pipes/muffler more now!

Hi, I am looking for the performance muffler with lowest sound for 2010 Honda crv ex-l and. And recommendations?
I'd watch the video at the 8:50 mark and determine which model you're looking for. The Silentone is the quietest.
If you don't have to touch it to see if it's running...............it's too loud!!! LOL
Any for later model pontiac grand prix that will b quiet for it
I arranged them from loud to quiet at the end of the video. I'd suggest you decide what you want for noise level and pick one of those models for yourself that would fit whatever packaging your vehicle has.
What was the most quiet one called on the far right?
AP Exhaust SIlentone. The model I was testing was the 5561 but they have different versions for input/output piping options.
THANK YOU! This is exactly want I was looking for!
Glad I'm not the only one :) I just welded some shiny tips on that muffler. I'll be posting an update soon.
This is a cool video thank you very much. Looking for alternatives to the straight through fart cans. Wanna try something unique
Thanks. I thought the same thing.
I have a 2002 Mercury Sable GS 3.0 overhead cam and I'm 61 years old. I need a muffler that's going to sound good but more on quiet side thank you in advance
I've been happy with the AP exhaust MSL maximum. If you have a local muffler shop, I'd see if they have anything laying around that you can try out just like I did (remove factory muffler, install a couple new ones) to make sure you're getting what you want. If they don't have them, you might have to just order a couple different ones like me. They are cheap enough :)
I thought I would do an update I ended up having the Third catalytic converter taken out first ended up having backflow problems so last month I had my local muffler shop install a Magnaflow Muffler sounds great and sound so good I'm thinking about having a dual exhaust installed thanks for your input look forward to more of your videos
Hey. I have a Camry but want it to be as quiet as a Toyota century or as close as possible. What do you recommend. I was thinking about adding 2 quiet mufflers to one pipe.
The Camry is pretty quiet from the factory. Has the muffler or any other part of the exhaust been changed to make it louder?
Dynomax/Walker 17733 and 17734 have a good flow and quiet reputation. Good video, thank you
Good to know! I don't think I was able to find either of those when making this video.
Thanks for your contribution!
straight to the point.............................thank you.....................I have a 2017 ecoboost mustang....any recomendations
Weird, I replied to this a couple days ago but its gone now. Do you have the factory mufflers now? I have a 2018 Focus ST that came with borla exhaust and it sounded terrible. I ended up trading with a local for the stock exhaust and some beer :)
Any future graphs will be posted here: forums.nicoclub.com/topic628954.html
