Steam for Chromebooks is here. Well, sort of, anyway. Launched in an official Alpha capacity back in late March, the long awaited 'Borealis' project has finally arrived and is quite impressive for an Alpha build. Games run pretty smoothly for devices utilizing non-dedicated graphics cards and after a few technical setup steps, the whole thing feels very thought-out and thorough. Sure, there are bugs that still need a bit of squashing, but we've been able to play some games in our Steam library with better results than we've ever seen on a Chromebook, and that's exciting.
We realized, however, that we'd yet to make a simple, straightforward guide on how to get this up and running on supported devices, so we wanted to put that out there for anyone looking. Now, you can watch through the video, follow the steps, and get Steam games running on your supported Chromebook with relative ease.
SUPPORTED DEVICES (as of 4/18/2022):
Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-1W)
Acer Chromebook 515 (CB515-1W)
Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-3W)
ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5 (CX5500)
ASUS Chromebook CX9 (CX9400)
HP Pro c640 G2 Chromebook
Lenovo 5i-14 Chromebook

I'm following your channel not just because of outstanding production; you are like the "Jeremy Clarkson of Chromebooks". Thank you for all your work
i made the likes 69 lol
This is very promising how well it all works in alpha, on select Chromebooks that don’t even have dedicated GPUs. I played resident evil 6 today and didn’t except it to look and feel as good as it did.
expect.
This guy has insane communication skills.
Great video!
Sadly the fact that I could lose all my stuff is a huge no go for me... which is sad. Maybe they'll get this more streamlined quicker.
Thanks for providing detailed instructions that even I can follow. What gets me is that to buy a Chromebook with the minimum requirements listed, you would have to pay as much for it as a comparably equipped Windows laptop, which in my estimation, would be more versatile. And it's interesting that the requirements specifically require an Intel processor when the Steam Deck uses an AMD processor. Because using a Chromebook to run my Steam games would require me purchasing a new, expensive Chromebook, I will stick with the Windows laptops I already own, as they run my Steam games just fine.
I'm not a big Chromebook user but I still enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work!
Yeah seriously. I'm just looking at the Acer Spin 713 and the Asus Zenbook Q408UG at Best Buy. Both are listed around $700 and both go on sale for under $600 reasonably often. Yeah the 713 has a nicer fit and finish to it, but the Q408UG comes with a 6C/12T CPU and an MX450. As far running steam games the Zenbook is just better. Like way better. And the build quality isnt bad either as far as it being a decent ultrabook goes.
on flags the borealis things did not show up should i just skip doing that or no?
Epic moment in chrome history. Now the question is what's the best CB for gaming.
its nice but to me big roadblock is the chromebooks that could run this or possibly would end up priced at same level of windows laptops and would have less issues. Chromebooks need to overall start getting new gen i3's at lower price points for this to start making sense overall
It says borealis has not been released on my device any updates when this might change ?
same i dont kno what to do
The proper way to close shell is typing exit
Honestly this really helped me out, but I'm just a little terrified of having my laptop being powerwashed and losing everything on it, so I'm not up for taking that risk.
I could see some of the new RDNA 2 APUs from AMD making their way into Chromebooks soon. That would really be huge along with a good Steam client.
I am super bummed that my current Chromebook is not on this list but I am hoping that they expand this out to more of the Chromebooks that are out now.
of the list of supported devices which would be the best if someone was looking at a mid-range gamer Chromebook?
none get something like an msi gf 63 thin you can grab it new for like 600 and used like 500 with a 1650 max q
good jod man
help me!!! theres no borealis flag for me :((((
I tried this on the Pixelbook today and the Borealis flags were not available. ☹️
It's for cromebook
@@ajanitomlinson1926 Yes Pixelbook is a Chromebook.
Sadly borealis enabled is no longer there. Any other work around? I have the Acer 514 on the list of devices you said are able to do this, so I am hoping there is another way?
Same
@@foolie2379 me too
So the fact that when I search for Borealis on the chrome flags page and it finds nothing, means my chromebook isn't one of the ones that can run steam then?
You could say Steam on a Chromebook is a real... *GAME CHANGER* 😃
the Chromebook's gaming world has finally picked up some... STEAM
I hated that... *JOKE*
😂 *SMH*
@@soulgamer8774 ITS NOT FUNNY😂🤨😂😂😂
@@prince_kevion6452 You are... *RIGHT*
i searched up borealis and nothing came up👎
No
Never been this much eager to have chromebooks until chrome is flex and steam happens
I love your channel abd always watch your videos. I have a question about Microsoft Office, it just isn't working for me about on my chromebook. Is this the same for everyone, have they changed something?
when i go to get borealis flag, there isn't any borealis flags.
Thank you, thank you, and Thank you. I have a 10+ Samsung I adore but it was so slow. It is now my new Chromebook with mega memory. I could have kept it going on windows 10, but I was tired of the updates and I have other laptops.
after going on the flags thing the borealis is not there is there a way to fix that ?
same
i installed steam on a neverwere laptop years ago ... very simple games ... worked ok ... as soon as you went to anything were you moved it died... i have tried it now on a cx5 i3 now.. works fine so far
borealis is gone what do i do
I love my 2 Dell Chromebooks, but I don't know that I would try to game on them. It's neat to get steam on it, but you probably want something more specifically suited for the task.
I cannot locate any Borealis. I'm in developer mode on the flag site... it says there is no such thing available.
sorry for the question, but after installing steam can I use it to play games like Marvel Spider-Man without problems, even though it would take window?
Marvel Spider-Man was never on steam...
Yo theres no borealls on my chromebook???
where tf is it so i can play steam
Will it install on older Chromebooks (such as the Pixelbook Go), if you just want to play older retro games from Steam?
Disappointing they went higher end. The latest intel celerons have surprisingly good gpu’s and should be able to run older titles.
i need help the borilues thingy isnt there iscitvonly in admin dev mode
during the experiments part i typed in borealis and it didn't pop up
mine is on this list but the instructions done work for someone who has no idea about computers
question i cant see the borealis-enable flag what do i do
same bro did u figure it out
None of the borealis stuff is showing up on mine is there a work around?
fr its not showing up on mine either
Same with mine
@@jordanmaxwell6019 its because your chomebook is now supported the list of supported chromebooks is in the description
@@maxandcheese2468 read my reply to jordan
What’s the diference from this installed method from the people have steam installed via Linux? Thanks
This is utilizing Googles new paravirtualized Venus gpu, so it has very little overhead and can run Vulkan titles (i.e Proton).
@@nils.offermann I know what none of this means. I downloaded it on Linux but it says I'm missing 32 bit files? Does that just mean my computer can't run it?
your my favorite now
This works like a treat on my CX5, Only thing is you dont seem to be able to import saved game files from your PC as you cannot navigate to the install path to place the saved game files like you can on a PC, So you have to start all your games from scratch. Unless there is a way and Ive just missed it? Let me know if this is possible.
i cant find borealis on my options any ideas? how can I fic that.
I CANT FIND BOREALIS
Thank you! ❤
you should try hurring and do the Asus cuz I am literally dyring to try this rn
Like your T-Shirt.
i cant find borealis
um i cant find borealis its wont show up is thet a reason or am i doing it wrong
yea this happened to me to im pretty sure it means our models of chromebook arent supported for steam
big f bro
@@lachiegd_2831 It also happened to me but mine is supposed to be supported...
i cant find borealis enabled is it gone or is my chromebook not able to find it
It says borealis has not been released on my device any updates? or is beacuse not is compatible??
Apparently the Acer 515 SHOULD be compatible with this, but upon adding the crosh apparently mines lacking memory/CPU is there any parts/alternatives i can use to get this operating or somewhat atleast functional?
Thank you!
Well it's strange because i recently changed to dev mode but i don't see any borealis flags in my chromebook is it because i have a older version or maybe they recently removed it?
If your chromebook is not currently supported then you won’t see it.
Thanks so much man
not me going to go play, “for honor” during class…
Please 🙏🙏🙏🙏 add key mapping in chrome os for Android games
i did this, it works, i can play stuff, but how do i access the actual files?
Doesn't work for me because my Chromebook says "Borealis has not been released on this device". Darn.
I wish I could use this borealis was taken off completely sadly
ok im halfway thru but sadly the wait time for the download is over 30 mins
What screen recording app u use?
Does it work on HP Chromebook?
Nice one Chromebook :-)
connect stadia like geforce now with steam and then you could play big titles on a chrome book....
when is the testing going to be done so i can just click a button and get steam
Hey go Cubs! Suzuki is the best!
searched borealis in that window nothing showed up
appreciate the tips bro, Jesus 4 the win!
i changed channel and enabled borealis but when i enter crosh it says “ your chromeOS chancel must be set to Beta or Dev to run borealis”
So I'm confused. The list says my chromebook us compatible, and it was fine, until I got to enabling flag borealis. It won't show up in the flags even though I searched it. What does that mean
same bro i think they deleted it
ow nvm our chromebook already has it ohhh
he has it in his description
I tried everything for hours but i’m STILL MISSING 32 BITTT I HATE CHROMEBOOKSSSJSIYJYJDHYJY
I already download the dev channel not dev mode but the borealis enabled isn't there
What do I do if borealis flag doesn’t show up? I do have an Acer Chromebook 514 but I don’t see the borealis flag.
You and me both. Doesn't show up for me.
borealis gone
I’ll just buy a laptop I’m not losing every thing on my chrome book for steam
o chrome flex também terá suporte no futuro?
i have everything and done everything but for me borealis just doesnt show up
Why does it wipe everything?
I understand stuff after you got into the channel but before?
Like bro, just make it so it clears your stuff you did after you set the channel, not the whole thing, I don’t want to lose my whole computer essentially
With the original 4k galaxy chromebook be supported?
How was Steam this revolutionary thing when it first came out but now it can't even run on certain devices?
It's baffling.
in the option " about chrome os " it doesnt show change channel and om;y shows the current update on it please help me
so its only for the newer chromebooks ?
Could I run steam on the HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook?
I can’t get the borealis to pop up in the flags search. Any ideas?
Will playing Steam Games on my Chomebook slow my computer down? Or is it safe to do? Thanks.
depends what chrombok you got
does bluetooth controllers work with borealis?
the chrome flags diddnt show the borealis??can u help
now does it work on a samsung chromebook? i got the steam app but am i missing something? games wont launch
if it say chrome book beta is not working on Chromebook what to do
this person just made me lose all my data on my chromebook.😡
Did you do Dev Channel or Dev mode?
@@JoeHoeDoesSomething I did the command thing and I then it said that I had an option but I forgot what it was since this happened a while ago and I then clicked continue and then my computer shut down and then it turned on. after that, it had the start thing like when you first get a Chromebook and sign up. Then after that all of the sign up stuff, I got all my stuff back but then my computer lagged and then my game stuff was lost. And my data was gone. Then I just had to restart and play my games.
If borealis isn't there what do i click?
It didn't work.
I tried looking for the flag needed to do this but it aint there for me, maybe in the future?
what if it doesn't show borealis in flags
it wont let me have dev mode do you know about that? or is it the wrong chrome??
What website???
4:12 i don’t have the Borealis bouton
when i go to change the channel it doesnt let me click on the channel its just like un clickable
The crosh terminal command isn’t working
borealis is now removed from Flags what should i do
I have an Acer Chromebook Spin 11. Is that compatible for Steam??
It just says the package cache seems tk ne out of date what do I do???
