Thank you keeping these videos live - I am new to quilting and the 5 steps for new quilters has given me the courage to try her expertise and wonderful guidance will live on forever ❤
I've made my first quilt following your method and it has been a very well received gift. I a so happy to have the ability to be able to give these beautiful handmade quilts as gifts now. Thank you Melanie. X
Im in love with the series,I'm a beginner and I all ways gets a little frustrating on my mistakes but learning with you,in you peaceful way to teach is so my better to learn. Thank you and I can't wait to finish this peace. God bless you and your family
A brilliant, positive video. Thank you Melanie. 💕 Scared but about to attempt piecing my first large quilt together on the utility room floor! Wish me luck everyone!
I've been quilting for many years, made quite a few quilts, and I still so much enjoy your tutorials. There is always something new to learn and I'm happy to watch you teach us, you have a very special way of teaching. And yes, I have made mistakes along the way, and still do, but I love putting a quilt together. Makes a heart happy!
I just watched your first three quilting class and I LOVED IT! I am just learning to quilt and sew on a machine at the same time. I am being taught by three ladies in their late 80's and early 90's. Needless to say, it is a gift from God. I wanted to get on youtube just to see if I could get a good visual and found you. I have been feeling so overwhelmed between learning the quilting process and learning to sew on a machine. I liked what you said about "not stressing"......I want my quilting to be a healing and meditative experience. I will continue to watch you. Plus, I am a cat lover......
Thank you, Melanie. I am a beginner quilter and am learning a lot from your quilting series. I like your style of teaching. You are very clear and detail in your presentation. Thank you, thank you, so much for putting this out.
last year I learned how to crochet using your videos, amd now I am learning to quilt with your help as well!!! I love that you got down on the floor to show us the process, it made it very clear for me on how to do it. so thank you!!!
I see these comments are pretty old so don’t know if you are still reading them. But just wanted to say how fun and informative your videos are. You’re really gifted. Thanks Melanie!
Thank you Melanie for the clear instructions. I am new at quilting and ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of making a quilt! So now I am finally starting. Can't wait. You gave awesome tips so that might help A LOT!
This video series is SO awesome - you are so clear in your explanations, but still concise! I am a beginner sewer and have not plunged into the world of quilting yet - but your videos have given me the confidence to try my first!!! Love watching you!
Ditto!!! I can’t believe she’s gone 😭 But I’m so thankful for all of her content. I found her today and have already started cutting 4 ½” squares. And I have a quilt which I need to bind. I wish I would have found sweet Melanie years ago. I’ve learned heaps just watching her today. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you for the encouragement. I tend to forget the why and focus on perfection. Since I am a new quilter, working on my second quilt, I need to be reminded to enjoy the process, and see the beauty in the finished product, with or without little, teeny issues!!
Thanks for this explanation, Melanie! I just completed my first quilt top and eager to get on to the finishing stages. Thanks for your beautiful philosophy and guidance!
Melanie, it was so wonderful to hear your encouragement at the end of the video! As I watched, I could see that you were getting very passionate when sharing that this process is for fun, an outlet, and to ultimately become a blessing for ourselves and for those who we share it with. I really needed to hear that tonight! My quilt was getting the better of me and I really needed the reminder that I need to step back, relax, and enjoy that I am getting to create this and my son will love it no matter what! Thank you, thank you, thank you! :) ♡ Oh yeah, I love it when your cat photo bombs your tutorials! Gotta love her! ;)
Melanie, I am just starting to quilt and am so happy that I found you! Your tutorials are fantastic! I know you posted these over 4 years ago, but here I am now ...just wanted you to know. If I can get my act together I'll share photos of my first quilt. It's definitely not perfect, thanks for letting me know that is totally ok!
Your video is so helpful to me. I really like the idea of taping the backing to the floor. I would not have thought to do that. I am working on my first quilt so thank you for spending your time to walk me through what I should do to cut down on frustration and quilting time.
I wish I did have the space like you. but I'm still gunna get this quilt done. it's my first one and I'm doing it my hubby. so even though it's gunna be super ugly and random. it's going to rock bc we did it together. thank you so much for the words of encouragement. it was refreshing hearing that.
I've made dozens of quilts too, and perfection isn't the most important thing! You nailed it with your explanation. Thank you so much for that. Also, I was once told that the Amish intentionally make a mistake in their quilts because no one is perfect.
Melanie I just want to say that your videos are amazing!!!! I love the way you teach and right now I'm just a beginner but hope that I can one day make this beautiful quilt. Thank you soooo much for the encouraging words and God Bless you
I just have to say that I am LOVING this series. I am working on my second quilt, but my first was with the help of my mom, so I feel like I'm a beginner myself! Thank you for the encouragement at the end-I'm quite the perfectionist and seem to get frustrated with myself when things don't go EXACTLY the way they are "suppose to." Also, LOVE the design of the quilt you are using in this series! I hope to use this pattern in the future!!! :) keep doing what you're doing!!!
Why the hell would she get thumbs down? She’s teaching you something. She’s kind, very instructional, and positive. Just makes me wonder. What has she done to get a thumbs down.
Last year I wanted to learn how to crochet and you helped me with that, I've made tons and tons of things. My home is an Aladdin's den of crochet items but I've been looking into other crafts to start and I never ever thought of quilting but this series has really helped me. I think quilting is for me! Thanks Melanie!
Thanks for the ending encouraging words!!! This is my first quilt and Ive made mistakes... But thats how its known its homemade. Ive so enjoyed the process and all the information!
I really enjoy your videos Melanie! Your personality is so great... your cat video bombing you had me cracking up. I'm hoping to make this quilt as a Christmas gift for someone... if I can get all my other projects out of the way! Good job in motivating new quilters and letting them know mistakes are ok! I think we are our worst critics sometimes... and like you said - it's supposed to be FUN! Thanks for the quilt along series.
This is so fun!!! This will be my very 1st quilt. I've only been sewing for a year and it is so soothing yet I feel so accomplished with every project I complete. Your tutorials are to easy to follow I feel I can do anything lol. I can't wait til video #4.
I'm loving this series! Going to wait until I've watched the whole process until I start one, but you are doing a fantastic job of teaching all the steps. Thanks so much!
You're awesome, Melanie. New quilter and subscriber to your channel. I SO much appreciate your encouragement and reminder that this is fun. You motivate me!
I am loving all of these tips and lessons I just finished my first 2 quilts and boy can you tell they are beginners but the girls LOVED them. just a thank you! I am about to start a Halloween quilt. thanks again!!
Justine Hall woohoo! I love holiday quilts... I was just looking at my halloween quilt and Christmas quilt in the cupboard and got a little excited that I get to pull them out soon!
Love these vids. Have to convert all the measurements to metric as I'm in the UK but that's just a technical thing. I don't think I would send mine off to a longarm quilter. May as well buy a quilt as it would not be my own work.
Melanie love all your tutorial's you demonstrations are very clear and easy to follow. Thank you so much. I have been wanting to do FMQ for ages but too scared, so that will be the next one to watch :)
Another amazing video Melanie! They have been so informative and helpful. I plan on using the quilt you have been instructing us on to make 2 baby boy quilts in the coming weeks. I'm so excited to get started but I need to purchase the fabric first...oh no shopping for fabric isn't fun...NOT!!!
I'm lucky enough to have a large kitchen island that is perfect for basting smaller (crib sized) quilts, which is all I've had the guts to attempt so far. It took me a while to think of using it that way though. So here's a quick tip for beginners: think outside the box when deciding where to baste! You may have somewhere in your house that works better than the floor. Before we moved into this house I didn't have a hard surface big enough, so I had to go to my parents house to use their kitchen floor.
Hi Melanie, Helpful Tip: I used a yard stick to assist in reaching across the quilt back, batting & top to smooth out the layers when layering each piece. And I also use those knee protectors that carpet layers use to protect their knees, that way I can crawl on the floor and not have my knees hurt. Looks like you got kitties stamp of approval! lol
Melanie i love all your videos i just start my first quilt but i feel the im not too good on this but this video put me on the other page, Im not going to give up thank you soo much i can't way for video #4
Sulky makes a more eco friendly spray baste you can use i doors, that's the only one I've tried because I also want to minimize working with any chemicals. Hi Melanie. I’m enjoying your quilting videos. I am attempting my first machine quilting. One question I have that I can’t seem to find the answer to in any of the hundreds of videos about pin basting: Does one/should one plan out where to put the pins according to where they want to put quilting lines on? It sounds silly to say, but it seems like it needs to be mentioned in tutorials. I found myself pinning the heck out of my quilt, then it suddenly dawned on me that I potentially made things more difficult for myself for machine quilting because of the placement of the pins. Thanks!
Hey Melanie I love all of your videos I have watched so far. I have a question about the quilt backing. I wanted to make sure is the back just one layer? Yes the back is 1 layer, if you see the back on the floor as I am taping it down, you will notice the seam going horizontally across. So for this project, it needs 2 yards on the top pieced with 2 yards on the bottom. That's for voile :) it would be different for different width fabrics
Love your tutorials I'm new to quilting and find your series really informative and helpful. Can you give me any further hints to stop puckering when machining the straight lines. I took a lot of time make sure everything was well basted but the top layer still seems to move and pucker.
Did you see video 1? I am using voile for the back, but quilting cotton is great. I haven't worked with double gauze much yet. I have some that I am itching to work with though :)

Watching this video again. How do you keep your backing from not getting wrinkled? Every time I put baste my quilt with pins (just to keep the layers together, with no quilt design) on a carpet floor , the back is wrinkled. I try using masking tape to keep the backing on the floor, but they will come apart when putting on the batting/quilt top.
Thank you! Check out stop 1:45 in the video where I discuss batting. There are lots of options on the market and pro's and con's to each. This specific project is Warm and Natural.
I am planning to make my first quilt . I have watched few videos just to get familiar with it . My question is why the batting and back fabric should be at least 2 inches bigger than the quilt. In the end it gets trimmed anyway. Thanks
What I want to know is how did you keep that cat from walking all over your quilt? I love the tip about folding the top layers in fourths; it seems so obvious but I never thought of it.

Everyone starts somewhere,be encouraged,it will be beautiful, pratice makes perfect

Lol. I heard about that, but my quilt will probs have enough mistakes anyway... 😂
That's cute
I really like how you break things down and are genuine. May God bless you and your channel.
I come from a family of quilters, but never learned. I'm currently making my first quilt. And I'm so happy.

We all miss you Mel. ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Great video, I always get wrinkles in my backing but I really don't have enough space to lay my quilt out correct. But I keep trying! Thanks Melanie.
Yes! It is therapy for our soul! I heart stitching too. Love to see your kitty in the videos :-)
Thank you for this video. I've never seen how this is done. It was very informative. Thanks.
these series are great. I'm learning soo much.
enjoying your series, Melanie. I feel your heart :)
Hi, Melanie, that was a beautiful quilt. I love your sewing videos. You are like the Nancy Zeeman of RUclips. You have my support. ❤❤❤
Byron Chandler That is a mighty big compliment, THANK YOU!
Melanie Ham You're Welcome, Melanie.

👍🏻 all 3 of your videos have been very helpful. Thank You
Very informative. Thank you.

BJ7481 great tips!
Hi Melanie! I made my first quilt thanks to you and now I'm working on quilt 3! Can I use Fleece as my batting?
So informative. Luv u Melanie ❤
Love the tutorial, very helpful, also love your cat
Haha thanks! He often makes appearances in my videos lol
how do you teach your cat to quilt, mine just sits there and he needs to make the half square triangles
I'm dead! :-P
LOL
Love the photo bomb by your cat..what a cutie!!
It dissipates in about a day, so you have to spray and get to work right away so it's better for smaller projects like table runners. Any overspray disappears too. I do like it for something quick and small like a mini quilt. I still prefer thread basting, I follow Sharon Shramber's instructions for that and it works best for me.
You make it simple and easy
Did you see first or crochet I never knew you sewed I made your blanket the one that uses to threads and it's pink gray white that's the video that I watched I I made the blanket it' looks awesome thank you so much
I really enjoy watching your video’s!
Love your videos!
Melanie ou are the best you help me so much for a french laddy like me your info perfect Hppy easter
I know you sewed it where you cut the salvage off but I was just a little confused because I couldn't see a full shot of how you pieced it together before sewing it. The confusion began when I thought you had the 2ft backing folded into quarters then cut the salvage. Please help! Thanks so much...
I took a lot of time make sure everything was well basted but the top layer still seems to move and pucker.
thank you for your encouraging words!
Could you go into detail about the fabrics options maybe? Whats the difference or what do you prefer? Voile, double gauze etc?
Did you see video 1? I am using voile for the back, but quilting cotton is great. I haven't worked with double gauze much yet. I have some that I am itching to work with though :)
I feel you with the cat, I have 2 that always want to check things out lol
This is Emily btw. My husband's name comes up not sure why! :) can't wait to watch a few more and try my first quilt!
I'm so glad that I started watching your videos. You have helped me come out of my shell and try quilting. Thank you again. I hope that I win the Fiskars giveaway
Very nice, clear, concise, and informative. (could hear this one better too)
Though I've made a few quilts of various sizes and my MIL and SIL make tons of quilts - I've never heard fabric backing being called "the wall". I googled it and could't find anything. The 108" backings I found were generally made from cotton. I guess I learned something new today!
I think it's called "voile"
sadiejosiemom haha yes, voile... which is pronounced vwall ;)
Good video . Thank you
Thanks so much, great video!
Thanks, Melanie.
Thanks for the helpful videos!
Awesome tutorial. Can I ask what type of batting you use? It looks so thin, but durable for your project. Thanks.
Thank you! Check out stop 1:45 in the video where I discuss batting. There are lots of options on the market and pro's and con's to each. This specific project is Warm and Natural.
Your kitty is adorable :)
Do you wash your fabric first. I hate doing that but my MIL said I should always.
I am planning to make my first quilt . I have watched few videos just to get familiar with it . My question is why the batting and back fabric should be at least 2 inches bigger than the quilt. In the end it gets trimmed anyway.
Thanks
Of course the cat would walk on that! Haha!
Thanks for the tutorial, you've encouraged me to make a quilt.
Thank you you are amazing teacher
Thank you! Thank you! Question, what about fusible bating? Have you used that before? Thoughts?
Jasmine Rivera Moore I use fusible fleece for bags... but I have never used fusible batting before ;)
You are the best! Thank you!! 💕💕
Have you tried pinmoors to put on the edge of your pins
Bless you in heaven Melanie 🙏💚🧶
What I want to know is how did you keep that cat from walking all over your quilt? I love the tip about folding the top layers in fourths; it seems so obvious but I never thought of it.
