Cornette had problems with dealing with them backstage but he always saw potential in them. All he ever said was he wanted Owens to lose 20-30 pounds and Zayn to drop the luchadoor gimmick and start cutting promos. Lo and behold that's what they both did when they got to WWE and they got over.

The irony of me clicking on this and watching Russo say Zayn can't draw right after seeing the crowd pop like crazy for Zayn at Wrestlemania 40 is astounding

That was all a gimmick to promote that movie. Vince stands by what he says. He was the first guy to give Booker T a WHC title run because he knew Booker T was the real deal and deserving of it.

Normally I'm really not a Russo fan at all. But where is the lie here? It isn't an exaggeration to say that Sami gets nowhere without Roman's heat. Because it was the fan's hatred of Roman that led to the absurd grass roots underdog shit that then led to fans wanting to see Sami beat Roman. Take Roman away and Sami just isn't that over. The IC title is already losing interest because a dude with no muscles that looks homeless is holding it, as opposed to Gunther, who inspired awe once his reign really got going.
I also agree about Owens. The right gimmick, and his build works for him. But there is a reason that The Rock draws what he does and Owens draws what he does.

I kind of agree with him. The Attitude Era was very funny, and part of that was how absurd and hilarious it was to see these huge guys in tights basically doing comedy sketches. Family Members of mine who hated wrestling would stop what they were doing to watch that spectacle. Like bodybuilders in speedos doing Shakespeare. Now, when they're being funny, it really just looks like regular people in a just another improv or sketch comedy troop - and not a very good one.
Meanwhile KO and Sami are probably 2 of the most over guys in the company

This whole "He's too small to kick anyone's ass" argument is so dumb. Who won the first UFC? Royce Gracie, about 6 foot, 170 pounds. Who is the winningest champion in UFC history? Demetrious Johnson, who is 5'3" and fights at 135 pounds. Walking through an airport, Demetrious wouldn't turn heads, but he could kick 90% of their asses, why? Because skill matters more than size. Yes if you put two athletes of near equal talent in a fight, the bigger man will most likely win, but it's not guaranteed. And the whole "casual fan" thing needs to die, there isn't an audience of millions of people out there who are just waiting for a wrestler to catch their attention. It's not 1997 anymore. During the Attitude Era, if you wanted to watch RAW, you'd have to either watch it live or tape it on a VHS. There was no DVR, no RUclips, no Torrents, no streaming services and there weren't hundreds of cable channels. You also didn't know what was on TV on a specific channel unless you had a TV guide. If every other show on TV's ratings has stayed the same and wrestling had dropped to 1-2 million viewers, that'd be one thing, but now cable channels not only have to compete with other OTA networks, there's all this content available on demand and a lot of people just don't see the point in subscribing to cable anymore. Owens and Zayn are fantastic entertainers, I'd argue they're the best thing in WWE right now. These old heads reliving the past should just let it go already, times have changed and ratings will only continue to decline as less and less people watch cable.

It’s so funny how people really still talking about wrestlers being draws in the WWE. All being a draw means is you draw in money, so if they are top merch sellers, and people pay to see them then they are draws. They may not necessarily be the main draws, but the argument now is basically WWE itself is the main draw. Most of the time when WWE comes to town they barely even mention matches. Because they know the fans are coming to see a particular wrestler they’re coming to see WWE.

Russo shouldn’t be allowed to talk about wrestling lol. The man destroyed an entire company that was doing extremely well before he showed up. Remember WCW was winning the Monday night wars before this clown showed up.
Actually Russo came in late-1999 long after WWF turned things around and became the #1 company. In fact WCW was doing horribly during the spring and summer of 1999 and Russo did slightly increase ratings for WCW, just not enough to turn things around.

I agree to a point, there are too many guys that look like they could be just your everyday guy walking around the store. That can still work with some guys like Road Dog or even Arn Anderson back in the day but Road Dog was a great talker and had so much charisma. Arn looked like the kind of guy that would walk into a hick bar and knock out the loudmouth. They still had an IT factor.
Road Dogg was a Platoon Sergeant in the Marines, was in the Gulf War, and is over 6 foot tall legit. Pretty serious in my book.
