Who says flavour has to be expensive! Tip for the mash - I usually cook a large pan full of mash. In the long run, it saves time and energy (both through the meter and mine!). So I am used to mash being drier than I like. This is easily remedied with the addition of a little milk - but be careful, it soon goes from a difficult to work crumbly mess to a disgusting slop. I really don't know the answer to this one, and I appreciate how much energy a grill uses just to get up to temperature - but the extra crispness is so worth it if you can afford it. However, I wonder how close an effect you would get with a culinary gas torch, and perhaps even more importantly, how does the energy cost compare? P.S. if you are batch cooking mash, unless you have Popeye arms, a potato ricer is well worth having - the larger, the better. They are not a ridiculous price, but I am sure they can be found second-hand, especially as more and more cafés and restaurants are squeezed out of business.
Thanks for the tips as always Neil. I'll pin this as I'm sure my viewers will find them helpful. Yes, a ricer is the best way for smooth mash. I always use white pepper for mash as well, not black. It just works better for some reason.
@Adam Garratt A little nutmeg can make a change too - but you need to keep tasting as the difference between not enough to be worth the effort and too much is not that great.

It's similar to something I do but use a tin of corned beef, sliced and put in the bottom of a loaf tin, add a tin of baked beans and grated cheese, then top with mash and a bit more cheese and put in oven, and serve with veg and gravy.
Proper winter comfort food! Quick tip - Aldi and Lidl do ham trimmings for about £2-£2.20 and they’re really good. A good sized pack too - easily enough for 2 or 3 pies.
At the supermarket, it is worth checking the reduced price products. Often are canned products that have been dented. Getting cans of beans, soups, etc about half price usually. Premade mash too maybe, due to it being on its use by date, but if you check the packaging it may be able to be frozen. Just then put it in the fridge to defrost, for about 1-2 days in advance.

A large pie for Euro3,50 or Pound3,00. Ik ben een Nederlandse Kelt en op zoek naar recepten van eiland Kelten. Het is oktober nu. Ideal for a large pie for the week to come. From Lidl: 1kg of mince meat on sale: E0,50. 2 large pots of brown beans (1kg) current price E2,00. 3 free eggs (from my neighbours), some margarine, some flower and I've got potatoes too. Electricity oven estimated E0,30. Lidl vegies 400 gram on sale E0,25. I just needed to know what herbs to use (potato and paprika are not very Celtic but useful non the less). Maybe I will look at some Welsh miner videos too. But thanks anyway. I made two pies, one for my German/Polish neighbours with two kids I got the eggs from. I was to frugal with the salt. The pie was great, they just must apply salt to their own taste.
Make this even cheaper using smoked tofu to replace the ham and eggs. I just made some baked beans and wish i knew this recipe.. I'm really looking forward to trying it soon! Beans are also cheaper if you buy dried beans..
We have a bit of an issue here that the supermarkets are not paying egg farmers properly. They have inflated the prices, but won't pay the farmers more for them, which is causing a shortage. Greed from supermarkets as per usual
Do you know that the best thing about your recipes Adam are that they are not written in stone ,like the ten commandments and gives me the free will to tweak it in different ways. Top quality nosh as usual.
I think that's how most recipes should be. Like a starting point. I think that it also helps novice cooks learn and develop, seeing what woks and what doesnt
Baked beans jazed up with the spices, I do that most times when I have them even just on toast. Tin corned beef fella is another store cupboard gem, too 🤔
Eggs in the USA are very expensive they have gone up in my grocery store up to 9.00 dollars and in my tiny family grocery store near my house they are 12.00 . 😞
Thats absolutely shocking irma! If you have the resources, it's worth getting a couple of chickens to produce your own fresh eggs at home. I'd love to have some but I live in a flat, plus I don't think mogs would appreciate it lol
Errrr... After I met/stayed with the ex-gf (still bff) and her 3 horribles (kids/drop-kicks) her favourite refrain was , "There's nothing in the fridge.". I would just say. "Let me try."....... Want to try borlotti beans in non-tomato food? Buy cheap and wash (cheap) baked beans. Slow-baked belly pork (oven, 24+hrs) rubbed s&p and scored is cheap and heats the flat, too. HTH
2023 WILL be your year, Adam! Thank you for another great vid and good luck with your new venture! If all else fails; go to Mexico, cross the Rio Grande, go north till I tell you to stop, and you can help with harvest. Lol! Take care!
Errr.... Mr. Garratt; Try buying Schabziger or Pecorino. Hard cheeses that last forever (expensive BUT....) Hard to find but both add a new dimension to your macaroni cheese. Use your (cheap) cheddar, some mustard (powder if poss), and some (GRATED) Schabziger or Pecorino. THEN: Get your families/friends/relatives to cook together...........
Errr.... Mr. Garratt; Though I'm not a recognised chef (I hide); I would recommend two books: Delia Smith's Complete Cookery book and The Conran CookBook. Oh! Ask me about shallow-frying baked beans and how you experience a completely new (yumyum) taste....
@@Adam_Garratt Errrr....Ask (IIRC) Norwich City FC fans about her "singing". OH! Baked beans! Hi Adam, you always come up with the goodies, my lot will love this but without the chives …that’s tomorrow nights tea sorted…oh and Happy New Year too…👏👍🎉
Have to try this! Thanks, Adam! May I toss a tasty, VERY low-cost bean dish at you? It's from my Italian side. Toss 2 tins Cannellinni Beans (with liquid) - 87 cents/tin - into a slow cooker. 1 tin diced tomatoes (preferably with Olive Oil, Garlic & Basil) - 97 cents/tin. Toss in about 1/2 cup diced leftover roast chicken, or BEST OF ALL 1/2 cup diced Pancetta or Prosciutto. You don't need meat at all, but a BIT is nice. Toss in a stick of butter, a few tablespoons of minced garlic, Italian seasoning, a teaspoon or so of black pepper... Cook on high for an hour, then cut to low for 2 more. Add about 1 cup of al-dente cooked Fusilli, Casarecce, Gnocchetti Sardi, Ditalini, even the TINY bowties/wagon wheels. (You want a compact pasta) and let cook another 1 or 2 hours. Enjoy with Parmesan. Less than $4-5 and you have a VERY hearty meal for 2 or 3 people.
I have a tin of spam lurking somewhere in my cupboards so I’m going to use that to make this. My husband will think he’s gone to heaven 🤣🤣 Thanks for another great recipe.
When buying smoked paprika, folk need to be aware that they are not all equal. I know that Adam understands this already, but It is basically* made from dried peppers and comes in sweet or hot varieties, and is smoked or unsmoked so please check the label before buying the one you like. Rule No.1 is that it is NOT the same as cayenne pepper which it resembles in looks but which is made from chillies. *There's more nuance to it than this, but supermarkets will usually stick to sweet/hot/smoked/unsmoked.
Nice and simple, thanks. I will probably use some Frankfurter Sausage thingies I have for the protein cos I don't have any Ham. I may also use up some Smash which I got as a 'just in case' for Christmas. I don't know if they still do them but HP used to make good Baked Beans. You could of course use dried Canneloni Beans to further lower the cost and ad or not some Ketchup to compensate for the lack of Tomato Sauce. Personally I think this is nice as 'Fork Food' and isn't the key to eliminating the gray Yolk to quench the Eggs ASAP. I also like to peel them immediately afterwards. I have an Egg Boiler and I am told on the Air Fryer Web Sites that you can use an Air Fryer which I think is daft. Any chance of making one of your practical slants ona 'Cheese & Potato Pie' cos I havn't had one of those since I was Divorsed a long time ago. Welcome to 2023.
Thanks for the comment James, yes the secret to no grey ring, is firstly not over cooking and then rapid cooling once cooked. I have seen the air fryer method as well, but I have not tried it myself yet. I might do a quick short on it soon.
Cross & Blackwell baked beans used to be the best, but they no longer do them. HP beans are really good. In fact, any other make is better than Heinz imo. Onions are cheap. I find chives don't seem to taste of anything. Where do you find proper decent ham for 93p? Love your dear old moggie.
Here in Greece Branston beans are more expensive than Heinz - and even then you need a mortgage to buy them as they have to be imported - (luckily there is a Greek company that does the BEST baked beans I've ever tasted for half the price). Thanks for the recipe Adam x
They really are. Ketchup £3.50, pack of 4 cans of beans £5! I won't be ripped off for something that should be a cheap accessible store cupboard ingredient that many I'm sure rely on.
Looks lovely but I can’t afford eggs like that as they are now around $5-9 a dozen depending where you buy them so I’d use more meat as it’s cheaper right now in the USA the whole country is wtf with eggs and the usual thing if it has eggs in it the cost is being passed on to the consumer 🤦🏼♀️
We’ve had a few issues with egg supply here in 🇬🇧. Mostly about supermarkets not paying the farmers properly. But from what I’ve read in the US, it’s crazy right now. We’ll swap you eggs for cheaper fuel!
We Americans are only confused by Brits love of canned beans. Do Brits ever make beans from scratch- baked beans, pinto beans, white beans? We eat many in the U. S. from bags of dried beans.
Oh of course. I don't think it's all that common for us to make them from scratch. I have done before, but we just like the simplicity of good old canned beans.
Another great video. Thanks, Adam. Branston beans all the way. Won't eat any other. Thanks for the tip. On the offcuts of ham. Didn't know you could do that. My preferred bought in brown sauce is daddies, but home-made is best { Search Steve Owen here on YT for brown sauce recipe } 🙋🏻♂😊
If you take the price of Heinz baked beans (without the stupid zed), and turn it into the equivalent litre price, the cost of petrol would be £3.26/litre. Who would pay that? Aldi's baked beans have exactly the same ratio of beans and tomatoes (51%/34%) as Heinz, have more in the tin and cost 34p! They don't have a weird Heinz taste, either.
Face fodder 🤣 Iv got to cook this iv seen a few going around on RUclips one with corned beef in, others with bacon and sausage. But I'm moving more to to yours with the ham in it! Yum 😋 and my kids hate onions so chives is a great addition

I suppose u could use chopped up hotdog sausages instead of the ham , more likely to have them in the cupboard already. I love a concoction dinner.
Absolutely you could. Sausages, hotdogs, roast chicken, meatballs. So many options
Comfort food! Thanks for something new.
By the by, here in the U.S. bush's beans & eggs are so expensive 😫
Morning Adam. Over here across the pond, we make baked beans. Brown sugar, bacon, not much else.
Homemade baked beans would be epic in this
Great video! Bit confused why your eggs look green, my Burford Browns are very orange. Is there something wrong with your video settings?
Might just be the lighting
Baked beans jazed up with the spices, I do that most times when I have them even just on toast.
Tin corned beef fella is another store cupboard gem, too 🤔
Same here, I like to add a dollop of butter into my beans too, and good shout on the corned beef
🤣Eggs, cuz just not enough toots with only beans! And broccoli !💨 Am gonna try it though😉
haha you can leave them out if you are worried about ripping too many out. It makes a great first date dinner 😂
From my own experience as a vegetarian, beans, lentils and green beans are packed with protein! No need for meat, chicken or the like.
Hi Adam, baked beans was never a favorite of mine, however putting cheese on top it would make it better
Cheese for the win!
HTH
Had beans today with just some bangers on the side and fried egg on top.
It's a mess, it's delicious and just so good.
elite meal that haha
@@Adam_Garratt let's call it a cure for that matter. Nothing better than that after a long night out.
Adam I've always fancied trying a quiche a simple one to get me started how about it mate 👍
2023 WILL be your year, Adam! Thank you for another great vid and good luck with your new venture! If all else fails; go to Mexico, cross the Rio Grande, go north till I tell you to stop, and you can help with harvest. Lol! Take care!
haha cheers Al. Love Mexico! One day I will visit and try the delicious looking food.
Errr.... Mr. Garratt; Try buying Schabziger or Pecorino. Hard cheeses that last forever (expensive BUT....)
Hard to find but both add a new dimension to your macaroni cheese.
Can't beat a bit of Delia.
@@Adam_Garratt Errrr....Ask (IIRC) Norwich City FC fans about her "singing".
OH! Baked beans! Try shallow-fried with sesame oil, fried chopped garlic, mustard powder (shaken AND stirred (ta JBond)), any herbs you want.
How about doing a video about buying/ using a slow cooker?
Next, find any charity shops nearby for all the unwanted/unused Christmas gift cookery books.
HTH
Hi Adam, you always come up with the goodies, my lot will love this but without the chives …that’s tomorrow nights tea sorted…oh and Happy New Year too…👏👍🎉
happy new year to you and yours mate
Thans Adam! House is gonna stink this week as im having a go at your bean curry on Wednesday and this next weekend now 🤣
I think we are all gonna re open that hole in the ozone layer! 😅
That sounds delicious!
In summary, it’s sort of a fry up adapted into a one-pot casserole.
I have a tin of spam lurking somewhere in my cupboards so I’m going to use that to make this. My husband will think he’s gone to heaven 🤣🤣 Thanks for another great recipe.
No way am I making this for my husband as it’s winter and my windows aren’t being opened.😂😂
BABY WAKE UP ADAM JUST POSTED
😂
When buying smoked paprika, folk need to be aware that they are not all equal. I know that Adam understands this already, but It is basically* made from dried peppers and comes in sweet or hot varieties, and is smoked or unsmoked so please check the label before buying the one you like. Rule No.1 is that it is NOT the same as cayenne pepper which it resembles in looks but which is made from chillies.
*There's more nuance to it than this, but supermarkets will usually stick to sweet/hot/smoked/unsmoked.
I love la chinata brand. When I see it I always pick some up.
@@Adam_Garratt Me too!
HAPPY NEW YEAR ADAM! XX Branston beans are far superior to Heinz! Might give this a go!
Happy new year Tina! x
Brilliant and so healthy Adam. The only bit i disagree with you is, IT IS a gastronomical genius ! Hi Mogs lovely to see you.
haha thanks fay, mogs says hello back
Nice and simple, thanks.
Love the bargain Maldon! 😂
👍👍👍
Enjoy your "Buggering Off"....thats not for me, but the bean pie definitely is👍
Cross & Blackwell baked beans used to be the best, but they no longer do them.
Why is everywhere charging so much for beans? I mean they should be a cheap accessible ingredient for people, especially now. x
@@Adam_Garratt I remember, as a student, eating cold baked beans from a tin. (Saved on electricity). Thanks for all your videos mate x
Heinz prices are taking the piss at the moment!
They really are. Ketchup £3.50, pack of 4 cans of beans £5! I won't be ripped off for something that should be a cheap accessible store cupboard ingredient that many I'm sure rely on.
Looks lovely but I can’t afford eggs like that as they are now around $5-9 a dozen depending where you buy them so I’d use more meat as it’s cheaper right now in the USA the whole country is wtf with eggs and the usual thing if it has eggs in it the cost is being passed on to the consumer 🤦🏼♀️
it's mental honestly. Someone else mentioned the same thing!
We’ve had a few issues with egg supply here in 🇬🇧. Mostly about supermarkets not paying the farmers properly.
But from what I’ve read in the US, it’s crazy right now. We’ll swap you eggs for cheaper fuel!
Officially adding "fart ring" to my personal vocabulary.
😂
What new devilry is this?
The best kind
If you take the price of Heinz baked beans (without the stupid zed), and turn it into the equivalent litre price, the cost of petrol would be £3.26/litre. Who would pay that? Aldi's baked beans have exactly the same ratio of beans and tomatoes (51%/34%) as Heinz, have more in the tin and cost 34p! They don't have a weird Heinz taste, either.
corporate greed. I hope people remember these brands that shafted them during the tough times when people need cheap accessible food.
Face fodder 🤣 Iv got to cook this iv seen a few going around on RUclips one with corned beef in, others with bacon and sausage. But I'm moving more to to yours with the ham in it! Yum 😋 and my kids hate onions so chives is a great addition
It's a very interchangeable recipe. Great for using up bits you've got lying around that need using up
@@Adam_Garratt thanks Adam 😊
