I have been a govt employee 17 years and i agree. Job satisfaction is almost non-existent. Most folks stay for the pensions and large amount of time off.
The bureaucracy is hands down the most draining and detrimental thing that I have seen and experienced first hand. I was very naive to have thought that the warm welcome I received during my first week was a good sign but surely enough, just 2 months in and I started picking up on just how crazy it is. It's like working with a bunch of looney tunes on and off. It's ridiculous-and I think I would rather be in the private sector. I know both sectors have their politics and ways to navigate the org but my god have I never been in a worse environment than this one. Absolutely horrible.
In Private sector you making money for someone else, and making them rich meanwhile rich buisness owners are finding many ways to cut pay in order to put more into their pockets. Goverment work, you work for community not profit.
I do agree with lack of vertical mobility. It is a game of seniority rather than ability which is frustrating and feel counterproductive. Many of those who have risen to superior positions have put in 10-20+ years on the minimum
I don’t have a problem with seniority. I have a problem of what they do when they get to this positions. They know the bs grunts face and they don’t make it an issue to improve things.
This seems to be the case if you just sit at the same office in the same agency forever. Flying up the GS pay scale is easier if you are willing to move and go to other agencies.
100% accurate. Even county (local) government holds ALL of these characteristics and setbacks. It's enough to make you want to spread your wings elsewhere, since only the clipping of wings seems to occur the majority of the time in this realm of employment.
You're also expected to treat politicos as royalty, ignoring policy and procedures for the kings and queens.Theres a very "shut up and do what they want" type of culture, and if you push back you are treated like you're a problem by your coward bosses. After 10 years of this nonsense I'm preparing my resignation.
Current fed. Biggest issues is personal accountability of the individual. Thereafter, managers lean on the few people that actually do more than the very bare minimum. The unions protect those shameless employees who would otherwise be on welfare if not in their current position as a fed. Management at lower levels are saddled by management at upper levels who don’t care to understand what the mission actually is when they come up with the next big idea.
another thing about working for the government: (if you are an IRS employee) - if the government shuts down you are required to work without pay, and the ones who shut it down will still get paid - you signed an agreement that you wont strike against the government - you also signed you will not engage in protests or protest the government
I left my local county position as i was only part time and it was late night hours. I was cleaning park bathrooms and closing gates. It was also dangerous because of gangs, druggies and homeless. We were also very short staffed so it made it even more difficult. I was planning to transfer in a position that i wanted after my probation but it never opened back up again until many months later after i quit. I also applied for that position and now have an interview
I need an IT job. I already have received potential opportunities for internships with CS and IT. I am looking to do LE in the feds for a few years and get CS under my belt before I move the the private sector… also a pension is great
