Sylvia Campbell the mother of 24-year-old Dalton Harris is a beautiful 52-year-old woman who must have been a heartbreaker in her younger days and potentially can still do the same today.
The arched eyebrows and red braids are clear indicators that she can still turn heads.
Campbell has worry lines, however, appearing on her face these days since an incident last week after an irresponsible blogger concocted a story that her house has been torched in a fire because of rumors that Harris is gay and because it is said she abused him. She was propelled into the spotlight and reluctantly did an interview to defend herself.
Now days removed from the initial fear and anger that gripped her in those turbulent days, she wants to set the record straight.
At her still intact house in Sanguinetti in North West Clarendon Campbell said, “I love my son.”
"But it seems say Dalton believe say mi do him something terrible fi him ah tell everyone say mi abuse him. I don't know what it is. Yes, (as a child) I beat him when he was rude, but it was more scolding than anything else. Mi scold him outta love because growing up, he was very troublesome.
“But when he went on the X Factor and said that my eldest daughter was like a mother to him, it made me look like a careless mother. It mek people ask: 'What kinda careless mother she is for Dalton's oldest sister to have to be there for him like a mother?" she added.

To: Dalton's mother ;stop talking its giving a negative impression of youself. Dalton never said one bad thing about you. You are embarrassed and selfish. Dalton is obviously going through a lot and all you can say is that he should "Big you up" He got to the UK because he is resilient,tenacious and talented.
Now is not the time to be talking about your son negatively and you should stop calling him a liar. You have admitted to almost everything he said . One lesson you could take away from this entire story is that a child never asked to be here so when you bring forth one it is your responsibility to take care of that child in a responsible way. It's obvious that you made some mistakes; we all do, pull yourself together and be a better parent for your younger children and show them lots of love. Please bear in mind that no child of yours is obligated to give you a two-storey house. Work hard and be a good mother and person and God will bless you. You will get the house, money and anything you crave through your own efforts. Dalton does not owe you anything but honour. Please ask God to take that sense of entitlement away from you. There were times when we wish our neighbors would step in but none didn't. I recalled one lady saying "a shi bring them cum yah Suh shi free Fi duh anything with them". These parents knew how bad the abuse at home was but everyone turned a blind eye. Some even bar their children from playing with us, which isolate us more.

I always say adults think children are stupid or they dont understand what is going on around then. But they do understand and they remember everything....we you as a child is treated badly by relatives or others you grow up but you have it in the back of your mind.

I sincerely believe that Dalton will eventually find it in his heart to forgive his mom for all the chaos that he has been through. I respect the fact that she had admitted that he was abused by his stepdad and herself. I really dont think that she thinks she did anything wrong but disciplining her child and that's what most Jamaican parents know. I’ve never heard him say a disrespectful thing about his mother...all the negativity I’m sensing is coming from all these statements others are reading from her. My advice to parents always is to treat your children with love and understanding, protect them from any form of abuse because it runs deep for them. What you may think is not a big deal and they should get over it will be with them the rest of their lives. She should be proud of him because he’s a determined, articulate young man and I’m sure she set that example for him about never giving up.

I Agree with comments that Dalton has not directly said anything negative to or about his mother that I am aware of & what she is saying is causing problems for herself. I have lived in poverty-stricken areas in JA including Kingston & have seen with my own eyes the extreme emotional, verbal & physical beatings with sticks, fisted hands or anything nearby on children, for minor reasons. Eg. an 8yr old girl cooked & ate a planting without permission, her mother verbally humiliated her then grabbed & slapped her up in her face several times before I stopped her. A young boy was stripped naked, called a dog & put outside because he pooed himself. These are examples of usual forms of what many 'slave mentality' parents call discipline, inherited from slave owned ancestors throughout the Carribean. Traditions are not an excuse, these parents need to understand this is unacceptable, damaging abuse & change their ways. Dalton has brought global attention to the disrespectful, abusive treatment of children in the Carribean which may now, I pray, bring about educational change, esp on government legislative levels.

I was saying the same thing. No matter what you can never repay your mother. She is also hurting in so many ways. Until one is in the situation you will never know what they are both feeling so everyone should just back off and leave her alone let her speak. Its her belly pain like all a wi jamaican parents used to say " a mi bring u come yah and me will send you back" no one takes it literally, its all out of love. So whatever she said and did she wasn't trying to kill him but like she said showing tough love. He's a man now. He doesn't NEED his mother. Her job is done. Which she did horribly. The young man survived his childhood without a proper nurture from her, so at 24 years old, I don't think she can do anything more for him. Right now she needs him. Not the other way around.

We really need to take a look at how we treat children that we CHOOSE to bring into this world. We "show love" through physical violence, yet are then shocked when our daughters interpret their partners abusing them as love. We teach our children, consciously or not, that when one is frustrated or angry, it is acceptable to express that through violence, yet we are shocked at the state of affairs in Jamaica today.

The one thing that worries me is that the media and the industry will try and push him towards the gay life be it there or not, and will formulate situations.
