    Thank you so much for making these videos. I’m a somewhat “nerdy” 14 year old and I absolutely love rocket science. I tried out KSP and found that getting better at the game is rough so I sought out assistance on RUclips. I just want to say that your videos have been immensely useful and engaging and I just wanted to let you know that the work you’re putting into your videos is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

      As someone who’s played KSP over a thousand hours and watched countless hours of YT videos, I can affirm this is one of the best, if not *the* best in explaining the physics (especially the “Let’s Do The Math” series) as well as practical application/demonstration. I wish something like this existed when I was 14. Kudos to you for learning it. Never stop learning.

      Definitely check out his do the math series. It is going to be difficult at first but it is really good to have a deep understanding of it. Although you may never be setting up orbits for satellites (or you may who knows) it makes learning a lot of more complex mathematical concepts a lot more enjoyable to learn because it's interesting vs a dry burnt out teacher half assing stuff. Its a good idea, plus when things click it is really cool to think about just how things work.

    To get the phase angle between planets, I just use an actual protractor and measure the angle on my screen. The mod KER shows it in the tracking station but that's the tracking station, which is a bit of a pain if you are piloting a vessel.

    While the number of parachutes on the lander made the touch down velocity well within the safety margin of the landing legs, in general if you land in a valley/canyon, you will have both more time in the atmosphere and denser atmosphere which will allow you to land heavier vessels or with less parachutes. I have only landed a half dozen or so times on Duna, so I don't have extensive experience, but I found that the centers of canyons are generally about as flat as Duna gets.

    Awesome video. I have a mission enroute to Duna. I’m going to land, then rejoin a tanker in orbit that will have extra fuel, then go to Ike before going home. In using the technique discussed at 17:33 will it work the same just lining up ship, sun, and Ike? Or do I need to include Duna in the alignment? I have Transfer Window Planner installed if all else fails. But, I’d like to try a more seat-of-the-pants approach.
    Also, the ascent profile is excellent. I had practiced/simulated on a sandbox save and tried doing it like Kerbin (being about 45 degrees pitch at 10km and time to Ap approaching then maintaining 1min). But, it seemed, subjectively, too shallow and I was spending too much time in the atmosphere. This technique sounds great. Can’t wait to use it.
    Lastly may I say.... *FIRST*

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  3 года назад +2

      It should work the same way with Ike (no need to include Duna in the alignment, though honestly, I would just use Window Transfer Planner as you already have it installed.

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  3 года назад +1

      Just to add, ejecting from Ike for Kerbin is a bit trickier. Remember you want to leave Duna's SOI going retrograde relative to Duna's direction around the sun. Ike is moving in the direction you want when it is between Duna and the sun. Then think about where to put your ejection burn from Ike to add to this velocity.

    Great video Mike. It's funny how we all have our own way of doing things. For example, you landed, did whatever had to be done on the surface, and then raced off back into space. Me on the other hand, I tend to keep the crew on the surface until about the day before the planned departure from Duna when the phase angle's right to get back to Kerbin. I think I remember someone from the space industry saying that if we ever do land on Mars, it would be safer for the crew to remain on the surface, rather than spend months on end in orbit, waiting to begin their run back to Earth.
    I'm curious, and yes, I do have Window Planner installed, but I do like to try to understand how the maths works behind all the mods; you said we can calculate when the planets are at the right phase angle to make a transfer, how would you do that? Maybe a future Let's Do The Maths video there, eh?
    Anyway, terrific job as usual there mate.

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  3 года назад +2

      Yes, staying on the surface makes more sense, but in a tutorial made more sense to separate the discussion about ascending and getting home.
      I am currently working on a math video on calculating phase angles. The post date for it is the first Saturday of May. There's another tutorial coming out before that.

    • @gptiede
      @gptiede 2 года назад +1

      Staying of the surface is safer in large part because the radiation environment is safer on the surface. Additionally, the gravity makes living and staying healthy easier, in situ resource utilization is possible, and while not related to safety, it would allow more science to be done.

    I tried a 83* angle as you did in the video (return to kerban orbit, from Duna) and also tried 75* but im well off the mark, what am i doing wrong?? also using a gravity assist from Ike as I don't have enough ISP, (through the scenario mission Rendevour from Duna)

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  3 месяца назад

      -75 degrees is the correct phase angle. Make sure it isn't positive. The negative means that Kerbin has to be behind Duna in its orbit. Using Ike for a gravity assist makes it much trickier to set up. Remember your ejection from Duna's SOI must be in the retrograde direction relative to Duna's orbit. You'll need to get Ike in the right position for this to work. It'll take a lot of fiddling.

    • @MikeAben

      If you're lucky, the plane of your orbit will be close to perpendicular to the sun at the transfer window. If not, the ejection may take a lot more dV (combination of normal and prograde). You may want to consider changing your orbit if you can. Ike may be able to help with that.
