A nice demo, generally - good job. Two points I wanted to make. 1) It seems the amp sounds could've been closer with some EQing. The Mesa was way more v-shaped in it's frequency range, and it didn't have to be, unless you were shooting for an all knobs at 12 o'clock comparison? And 2) the Fender had reverb and the Mesa was dry, and reverb is always going to make things sound a little sweeter.

I thought both sounded compressed with the mesa being more so. Then I realised it could be his choice of picks. Never would have guessed it ws the eq but it makes sense.

Hey, Simon, great video! I like more the clean channel of the Fender, and I'm just starting to discover the value of a great clean tone amp, as I've been on the rock train until the last years. I used to think an amp that can handle dirty channels could do it with cleans, but now I'm getting great sounds from amps that doesnt need anything but one channel. May this kind of videos help young folks to know this!

You can't tell which of two extremely different amps has a "better" tone by testing them with one set of settings. It would have been a lot more useful to dial them to similar tones. You have two amps with completely different tube types, here. a 2x6L6 widebody amp against a 2xEL84 small box amp? Had you put the F-50 Widebody combo up against the Blues Deluxe, you'd have had a more reasonable comparison. That version of the F-50, by the way, earned just the second five-star review ever given out by Guitarist magazine in the UK. The F-50 Widebody is a legendary amp.

David Allen Did you even read what I wrote? FTR, I play a early 2002 F-50 narrow chassis combo, same classic Boogie size as the F-30 shown here. According to what I've been told by Mesa, about 400 of these amps exist, and then they "revoiced" the circuit and put it in the Wide Body chassis, only.

    • @gcvrsa
      @gcvrsa 6 лет назад +1

The differences in tone between these two amps are exactly what I would expect, given their respective design and construction. The only factor I don't know is what driver is in the Blues Deluxe. The F-30 comes stock with a Celestion Vintage 30.

😹 I could wtire a novel about music gear. For versatility some Messas can be good and you can do a good distortion on amp plus another pedal boosting it sort of sound on some. I noticed that with the right distortion pedals, some fenders can sound good with distortion to my ears. My old really good guitar teacher (who I had after so many ok and bad ones for me L0L) had a Messa for Jazz and I don't remember which one but it sounded pretty lit to my ears. If I could pick another amp at a store when I try some, I am guessing it might be a Messa one, I do already have a small discontinued Ibanez acoustic amp which can get a good enough volume for cleans with my hollow bodies in venues not giant by itself and I could get it used with a mic in some venues. I also have a Boss Katana Mini for busking and stuff. My ears have hardly ever been very pleased with Marshall amps though. The Jazz Chorus amps are not my thing too and I heard and tried some my friend had when I was in music school. The Roland Cube x30 has some ok distortions and I usually don't record stuff with it even though It has a record output thing I could use with my Focusrite interface. Focusrite Interfsces have the best to my ears compared to many other different interfaces. My dream guitar will probably have a bolt on neck because from what I have heard and seen bolt on necks are easier to fix than neck through necks. May your gear hunting be worth while and don't forget to try gear to make sure in stores and many music stores can order gear for you to try before you decide weather to actually buy.

All depends which type of clean tone you want and whether you are ever going to change the EQ settings or not. To compare these more thoroughly you should sweep the treble, bass and mid knobs.

  • @pdbordelon

They both sound great...the Fender being just a hair more desirable clean that the Mesa...BUT I would rather have the Mesa simply because you get a great clean tone and a kick-ass distortion channel that the Fender can't match. Im currently using a Mesa Mark 5/25 head/mini stack - sounds amazing!

The Mesa to my ears is a fair bit quieter than the fender and I'm listening on studio monitors. It just doesn't sound like the Mesa is pushing that much air in the room with the speaker. But that's an issue some could argue about Mesa is that their amps are so damn loud that they just rattle the fillings out of your mouth with 1 power chord. It would also be interesting to see them played through the same speaker and cabinet too.

I have a pre-CBS Fender Twin Reverb, and a Mesa Road King 2x12. The Road King has four clean preamp "voicings": clean, fat, tweed (copy of Fender), brit (copy of Marshall). Of them I mostly use the tweed setting. The Mesa blows away the Fender, making the Fender sound almost like it's built of cardboard or something. The exception is my Super 400 sounds too heavy with the Mesa but the lighter Fender sound works great.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. Never would have thought the Fender'd sound that much rounder & fatter... In a sparse mix like a jazz or blues trio, I'd go with the Fender to occupy as much space as possible. In a larger band context with, say, keyboards and/or a horns section, where sonic real estate is scarce, I'd pick the Boogie, and mix it to sit on top of the other instruments.

But playing a jazz box through either the Fender or a Mesa (I own both): the Fender colourizes the sound Fenderish, the Mesa will let your jazz box shine in it s true nature.
The Mesa is a better true clean pedal platform, the Fender will do fine, but will add the Fender layer over all you put in.
After years playing lesser guitars through my Fender I m switched to playing better guitars (Duesey, Eastman) through my Mesa. The first option gives you the Fenderish realm. The latter let s the guitars shine.

However the clean channel wasn't as good a hot rod deluxe or blues deluxe. Mesa Boogie are meant to have the gain turned up on clean channel to get a lovely crunch rhythm and the second channel for solos. Fender do 1 thing outstanding which is the clean channel. It's got great bottom end and power. I now have a hot rod deluxe again and use only the clean channel (drive and more drive on hot rods sound awful) so run t rex mud honey dual drive with left side of pedal set for perfect blues cruch rhythm and right side for solos. Being a blues guitarist personally fender amps are the best platform for clean channel to run pedals through

That said, most will find Boogie's have a wider range of tones - their knobs deliver so many colors. Fender's are sort of (lovely) one trick ponies. My only comment here is I would not have chosen a F30 as representative of Boogie. A Mark V would have made much more sense. This is a strange test to me. I have a Mesa Rocket 44 which also has EL84 power tubes. This I would say is not as typical in a Mesa as most models, especially the iconic Mark Series, and Rectifier series usually are biased to work with 6L6. (Although there are many other configurations, including some that are switchable to handle different types of tubes) My Rocket, as well as the F30 share a similar tone, and while it is a nice and very usable clean, sounds to my ear a little brittle on the higher frequencies.

Very "strange" micing technique. The dynamic(vocal mic!) where it is the harshest and the proximity effect is the worst, and the condenser doesn't even listen to the amp(diaphragm is pointed to the window)!? One can still get the point but its far from optimal. Also the drive channel on the recent Fenders is not simply bad. At "barely on" volume almost every amp sucks. The thing is supposed to be cranked and create interaction between the pickups, speaker, chassis, and air.

Mesa seems a little to hollow and thin for me.

just a little bit more gain on f30 and it would be a for more fair comparison but in this case fender is better (or fatter)

My Mesa DC-3 clean channel connected to a fender cab sounds more fendery than my Blues junior and beats my Blues junior hands down .The DC-3 is actually built on the fender princeton circuit (Mesa were originally modified Princeton amps to add more gain....read the history ) , the later Mesa Boogies clean is more the vox ac 30 circuit so while the cleans are amazing , they are not exactly fendery.

Mesa is super clean and impressive but a bit ice picky, the Fender was much more warm and musical IMHO.

yup the boogie yes why i said Peavey no idea , Mesa Boogie hand made in USA every one of them . My guitar tech opens all kinds of amps up to fix he said everything inside a Boogie is the best stuff nothing cheap or saucy . anyway nice video !

Mesa is way more chimey, clearer. Fender is thicker, warmer, but less articulate.

    Fender best on clean crunch.
    Mesa best on crunch distortion.
    Marshall best on distortion fuzz.

Not an apt comparison. Comparing apples with oranges. Try that Mesa with a Blues Junior, or the Deluxe with a Lonestar. Better yet, A/B the Fender with the new Mesa Fillmore 50!
