I've got an 07 ls460 with 193k, its still an amazing vehicle. I have no doubts that it could make it to 400k. The smoothness of it has to be experienced, everyone that rides in it is blown away when I tell them it's 14 years old.
I bought a 2007 LS460 with 97k on it for $12k. My mechanic did pre-purchase inspection on it and couldn't find one thing wrong. He was amazed. Best used luxury car for money. Most comfortable interior of any car I've been in. Oil changes are more expensive than typical cars because it requires 9.7 quarts of pure synthetic instead of usual 5 quarts. Lexus designed the engine to last forever. My brakes work perfect- linear and strong. The ride is buttery smooth and quiet. My mom has been an E Class lover for last 20 years. She gets a new one every 50k miles. One ride in my LS460 and she is talking about her next car to be a Lexus! While the LS460 is more about luxury than handling, it still is surprisingly capable at going quick and getting around turns. Just don't expect it to feel like a BMW 3 series.
@@sewj8046 I haven't had any brake issues. We did replace some of the control arms because my wife accidentally jumped a curb hard enough to bend the aluminum control arms .
I have a 2009 ls460 and I tested the top speed and got up to 155, not sure if my limiter was removed or what but I was very surprised. It also was extremely comfortable and still quieter than majority of cars at that speed.
Top speed of LS460 is electronically limited to 155 mph. There is a way to remove electronic limitation and car can go 174 mph. Either way, police will take away your car- lol.

I have driven both. I like the MB but it nickeled and dimed me to death. I've had absolutely zero problems with my LS. The reason high end German cars resale drops like a rock is because of the cost of ownership. Everything is expensive to maintain or repair. I sold my first LS to a friend of mine for his father. It has over 300K on the clock and it's still running just fine. Lexus really sweat the details when the LS was developed and it shows. There is a reason Consumer Reports always has any Lexus LS at the very top on their rating scale for dependability. There drop dead reliable and are great driving cars that will last for years if you take care of them. Get a MB S class if that floats your boat but be prepared to spend lots of money to keep it running.
Bought a '09 s550 4matic in '13. 39k miles...as of today 120k Miles .... No issues other than a shock replacement since i purchased it..... just spent 4k replacing motor mounts ...Trans mounts....a couple minor oil leaks and other services.. pretty much maintenance I neglected the last couple years because I didn't drive it much at all .. considering it's almost 13.5 years old and I've had it 9.5 years.. Solid car

No doubt some truth in your statement - but also Mercedes, at least post-GFC, are deliberately designed to fall apart once the factory warranty has ended - they can't take any abuse at all, and even if you do spend the money on the required maintenance, that's no guarantee it's not going to start to have a lot of very expensive issues to fix. Mercedes just want the owners to buy a new car every 3-5 years, and have no care at all for the second owners. Bean-counter engineering.
I checked both and bought the Lexus. Been researching them for months and driven a few. I really wanted a super clean, 1 owner, L and this is that. I've been cleaning up the exterior and love it. I had a loaded 2000 GS400 for 10+ years that was trouble free and an all around great car. I bought the GS after owning a CPO 2000 BMW 528iTa and was sick of visiting the dealer for electronic gremlins - and it was a super clean 1 owner, all BMW maintenance.
Kevin - I've been cleaning up the LS if you want to see it. Removed stickers, pinstriping, cleaned with claybar, used a DA buffer for swirl remover, sealant, polished windows and exterior lights... Up next is figure out brakes, tint, probably tires and alignment and checking out customizations or enhancements.

@@pope9349 What do you mean? The S-Class W221 is built like a tank. One of the finest examples of German engineering IMO. But yeah, obviously Lexus beats them with reliability if you compare it with an LS460 (which I proudly own BTW fully optioned haha). TBH I might have gone S-Class if I wasn't a student at the moment - looks like it has more character and poise, but Lexus comes real close in my opinion and coupled with its reliability suites me well :)
I think that most people just defer the maintenance on these vehicles. I got my 08 LS 460 with 100k miles for $11.5k and put in another $8k primarily in deferred maintenance. Replaced spark plugs, cleaned fuel injectors, rotors and brake pads, brake sensors, TPMS sensors, new stock wheels and tires, all the front control arms, airbag ECU and two rear seatbelts, and a few other minor things. But I bet that the next 100k miles, I just need to do oil changes and coolant changes and I should be just fine.
Yup that's the problem with these big luxury cars some of these previous owners defer important maintenance and we find out the hard way how much parts really cost on a flagship car
If you can't afford it. Mercedes benz makes very reliable cars IF YOU CAN TRULY AFFORD IT. Unfortunately, in America, reliability means the vehicle that can work with the most neglect.

I have a 2012 LS with 160,000 miles on it. It runs perfectly, is in perfect condition and looks like it’s only a couple years old. It’s the most comfortable quiet reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned and I plan on driving it as long as it runs. It will probably outlast me.
I was actually shopping for a Lexus ES350 or a GS, I spent 6 months looking at used vehicles. None of them were quite right, to me. AND THEN - I discovered the LS. Quickly realized it wasn't the ES I really wanted after all. I test drove 3 LS 460's, finally got a 2017 with 69,000 miles for $36,600. Love it, love it!
I just purchased a 2011 460L with 100,000 mi on it. It feels like I'm floating on a cloud, whatever it might need I will fix it I too hope to keep this car for a whole lot of years I don't get vehicles often. But this one is truly amazing already.

So I came across this channel about 4 years ago I think when it was new. I had recently moved away from the Cary NC area. Which was unfortunate because I have several nice cars I would have let him do a review on. This recently popped up on my recommended videos. Nice to see how far he has come along. Great review Kevin, bottom line is they are both great cars, and both have their great points. Expensive vehicles are expensive to fix when they break. The Lexus may break less, but if it does it will rip your ass pocket just like the Mercedes. A lot of the equation is which car does the person buying it prefer. My theory, get what you love, buy the warranty and ride. I truthfully bought my LS 500 because my wife loved the way it looks and drives, and still does, not so much thinking reliability. I think people buying these cars just love to, and are able to buy the most beautiful cars, and they are both gorgeous. Your rolling heavy either way, get what makes your heart beat, get the warranty, and ride, I would be proud to own either or both.

My dad's w140 class has 720,000+ miles on the clock. I guarantee you there is no better drive in any car out there.... no signs on dash no electric problems at all. He lives in Inverness drives down to london every two weeks and back. I'll upload the car soon.
Never really liked the headlights on this era of S class but the 2014/2015 the best looking headlights and overall looking car that’s why it’s my favorite looking latest one to me looks ten times better than the new S classes
you can EASILY just swap the W222 headlights into the W221 and solve your problem...... in fact you can retrofit virtually anything from the W223 and W222 onto the W221. Your gripe is a non-issue tbh
From a family that has had nothing but Lexus’s including a 08 ls460 I wouldn’t mind changing up to a S class. W221 or w222 they have just a timeless look to them and the black on black model doesn’t get more gangster than that.
@@silentbutdeadly3466 most of the suspension blew out at 100k miles and it got a bad coolant leak in the valley of the motor underneath the throttle body intake manifold. It overheated a couple of times

@@silentbutdeadly3466 the 550 is a nicer looking big body. It grew on me the last couple of years. That car might stand on its own. The LS430>220 the LS all day. The S class 221/222 looks good in its stock form you don’t really have to do anything to it maybe just a tint. While the LS460 might need some 3 piece wheels or air suspension to slam It, a lip kit. The w221/222 can be a young or old mans car. just don’t get the one with airbags and bring a scanner to run and check for codes.
A customer came to my job once to get a new battery..She had an 2003 es300..the car 570,000 miles on it...I couldn't believe it..(although my Lexus has 270,000 miles and had no problem).. So I asked her,"Have you had any problems with it?"..And she replied,"Only when I let mechanics touch it.' Lol Great cars...My mechanic(worked with me at Toyota) ..Told me..all you have Todo is changed All Fluids every 7 months...I've followed his advice and has never had problems underneath the hood..
@@eternalafterlyfe Mine is an 06 with 141k miles. Got it for 7500 about at the beginning of this year. Pretty good pricing with the plethora of people i've talked to, as well as according to my own research. Mine has hella highway miles on it. Be sure to check control arms (especially lower), struts, and the rear subwoofer (through the years the foam gasket that surrounds the speaker deteriorates and makes it sound like ass. Dealership will tell you that you need a new subwoofer which is around 500 new. The subwoofer just needs the foam to be reapplied to it, there are so many threads on clublexus with parts and step by step instructions. Mine costed me $20 and a couple hours of my time. Also try to look for the ones that have navigation as it also includes the mark levinson sound system which when properly plugged into sounds amazing.
My 2010 s550 from mercedes of houston started falling apart at 20000 miles. It had a wheel sensor recall that they patched until warranty was out and then wanted 2k per wheel to fix it right. I drove it to a cash for clunkers when the tranny quit at 66000 miles. Back at lexus and never looked back.

Have you tried just asking your local mercedes dealership? They could sell you a bumper to bumper warranty. If you have hendrick dealers near you, you could get the Hendrick autoguard warranty

Great review. I tend to gravitate towards the Benz (especially ones with ABC) because they ride and handle well so there's some sportiness despite the thing being as big as a house plus they have this super solid and heavy feel. The Lexus has a more relaxed "I'll get there when I get there" feel to it which will be a nice thing if you have a long commute or are constantly on the road.
@Ste 45 Because they didn't maintain it from the start. The Airmatic and ABC systems are finnicky but issues are well documented and a known fix is available.
My late mom owned 3 Benzes, to her they meant success. Maint and repair cost was excessively high. I still own her last one, 1999 C230 w 110,000 miles...the A/C went out, the radio needs programming to work, and none of the windows roll up without pushing up on them. I know it's old, but - really? Paying for a car in this price class I like to think you're making a solid investment, not just the money part of it, but for future driving pleasure, moderate maintenance costs, and reliability. Lexus is just about the only car in this class that provides that.

We are on our 3rd Lexus (all bought used with just under 100k) and we are always amazed how all of the electronics work perfectly and the engines/transmissions still operate so smoothly and how comfortable the ride is. The cars just feel like they will go another 100k without any issues. I just realized that we've never even had to replace spark plugs on any of them. One now has 175k on it.
@@kentlewis6604 Concur I used to work for a large government fleet of around a thousand cars, trucks, and alt fuel vehicles. The pickups and police cars were American but there were still about a hundred Toyota Camrys (2000 year) and several hundred Honda Civics. Those cars were almost never in the shop for repairs. Meanwhile the Fords and Dodges etc. kept 20 mechanics busy on two shifts. Even the new ones constantly broke, they design them that way!
I have a LS 460...I have always own Lexus with other brands in between like BMW, Cadillac, s500 w220, but on my work commute or drive to mall it's never enough road I always take longer way or go pass exit just out pure car enjoyment....the Corvette did that to me too....I've owned GS 300, GS 400, SC 400, LS 400 now LS 460
meh before the lexus fanboys storm the comments with the classic buzzwords comments like "lexus trillion miles doing nothing! mercedes junkk explodes while u drive !!!"' i have driven both and while the lexus interior build quality is superior to this Sclass generation, this LS feels like a downgrade next to the Sclass in terms of driving acoustics, wind noise, "bank vault" feel. these Ls's always have that annoying windnoise window seal issue *had it with my 2004 too* that Sclass's just dont have. id still pick the LS of these gen, but the 2014+ Sclass is in my opinion the best luxury car ever made and will be for a while, except a rolls obv.

Even though the S550 in this video wasn't perfect, handling dynamics and the quietness is superior to the LS as you stated. Fortunately this LS didn't really have wind noise at least but most do. 2014 and up S class is #1 no questions asked. My master tech also debunked the whole Euro car reliability thing as well, I should interview him on this channel

The Mercedes S Class has always been one of my favorite flagship sedans. They look like money but there is something about the LS that makes me like it more.
@@MeynMotorGroup I would love to hear what your mechanic says about Mercedes reliability. It is funny how alot of people says the same things about these vehicles being problematic as they age. Working in the auto business I hear this alot from mechanics as well. I definitely think there is some truth to European vehicles having certain reliability issues but I also believe proper maintenance and care of any vehicle will help it last a long time. For example, we sell alot of Dodge Grand Caravans at my dealership. They are definitely not known for reliability but customers trade them in with 150k- 200k miles and buy another Caravan!

First mistake is saying the word "Budget'" associated with Lexus or any competition. 2. All Lexus will out last a Benz. Note the repair cost of ownership is lower across the board owning a Lexus. Benz set the bar that is why the JDM had to make a competitive sedan. Lexus over the long term is a better built vehicle.
The shaking that you experience is probably warped rotors on the front wheels. Mine did this--otherwise it was a well-maintained one-owner vehicle, and I assume they got rid of it, so no point in them doing a last round of maintenance. I replaced the front rotors and pads, no more shaking while braking at speed. I got the parts from the dealer (something I've never done before). The cars are known to wrap the front rotors, but it's not a big deal to replace them when needed.
It can be caused by run-out where they haven't cleaned the hub surfaces properly when mounting the new rotors - even a fraction of a millimeter of rust can cause rotor miss-alignment that will rapidly turn into the shakes - and yes, it warps the rotors, so you then have to replace them again. Always be super fussy about cleaning the hubs before mounting the new rotors.
No comparison the Lexus will outlast the S550. My 96 LS 400 still going at 262000 miles, while my 07 S550 broke down 4 years ago at 97k right now its garage junk 😆.
Funny how people talk about reliability of Lexus when they Lexus had more repairs then the Benz. I have owned LS 400 and merc 500, 550 …. If you take care of your car maintenance and don’t dog it German cars will Last 300, 000 miles easy, but you are going to have to fix something on a car eventually. Both are top shelf luxury car and if you own are owned either you will appreciate. 🛑 the battle and 🧢
Excellent look at these two cruise lines, I've never been in a Merc S550 and I'm sure it's a pretty smooth ride. Here in Australia most people would go for Lexus as Mercedes are so over priced here and sales, after sales and service can be underwhelming at best. Enjoyed this comparison on these. This all comes down to how much you drive. If you drive A LOT per year, go with a Lexus. If you seldom drive, then all of the Mercedes issues are mostly non-existent. Hard for all of the issue to crop up when you are barely putting miles on the car.
What a crock of crap. You know damn well the Lexus is much better bargain than the Merc. It will last longer, have less repair bills, and less expensive to operate. Having leather and wood does not mean much when faced with a 4k repair bill.
Yea um you're not getting paid anything to be a Lexus Cheer leader. I already had to drop 4k on my repair bill for my LS460. Lexus never did anything for us and it's no better than any other full size Euro car on the road

At around the 10:30 time frame, it shows the steering wheel. It does NOT have the dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC or otherwise known as adaptive cruise control), since it's missing the button for it on the right side of the steering wheel (it's blank). If it had it, it would have a symbol with what looks like a car and a radio signal. If it doesn't have DRCC, it also will NOT have Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). Very few LS460's had the DRCC, and even fewer had the LKA. You could get it, but it was an expensive option. The hybrid version LS600h was more likely to have it.

sorry ...but my 04 LS430 got now 440k and never needs anything .... heck i like it so much i purchased 14 months ago a 2nd 06 LS430 for the day my daily dies ...sitting and waiting since !! nothing like the 1UZFE and the later 3UZFE motor !! they just runnnnnnn trouble free forever !! ...also had a daimler S430 that always needed something .... and parts for it are so not cheap ! hence i sold it !
The Benz is classy, I like it’s body arrow dynamics compared to the plain boxy LS. I also like the interior on the Benz. The Lex looks like a Toyota. But it definitely sounds more reliable and has a more solid build quality. Both great looking cars, if I had to choose I would go with the Lexus
@toomuchthyme Cap. Benz have a timeless design from all time period’s 40’s to the current years. No matter what year your Benz is your always rolling in style. I have an 88 and it still breaks necks 36 years later and gets offers
After 60 years of owning top quality cars; and racing too - this is a no-brainer! It has to be Lexus every time! In fact, I'd choose a 500,000 mile LS400 over any Mercedes-Benz; even a new one.
Very entertaining video Mate. There are many s classes here in Germany. That's why the LS gives me kinda like an exotic feel to it. Oh and btw, has the s class really a quieter interior ? Most of the reviews say that the ls is quieter and smoother but handles worse and eats bumps a bit more. I feel like most complain about the wind noise issue, but the ls should have less tire noise and traffic noise, right ?
Yes I've heard Lexus is a rare site in Europe especially with the taxes there so most buy German I understand. Yea S class is the quietest car on the road all the cars in this segment will satisfy but if we are going nit pick then yes points go to S550. LS does usually have wind noise but not this one fortunately but regardless S550 was just a hair better in that regards I'm talking like very finate percentages of difference these are the quietest and most comfortable cars on the planet
I was a Mercedes and VW owner for 20 years. German cars do have it all well put together ride, comfort, design. But after my 10th year I started to kick and punch dents in the cars. Quality is garbage. I now own a GS430 and its no problem at all but the Japanese style is not my flair but this is the better vehicle.
The 2013 Lexus was more of a refresh. It was not a completely new design. It continued that way to 2017. 2018 was the true new Lexus LS since 2007. The 2014 Mercedes S class a completely new vehicle

To me, luxury includes reliability. Sure you can get a warranty on the MB, but if it's in the shop a lot, that's not luxury. I own a 2013 LS460 AWD without the air suspension. It's a masterpiece.
I have a 2009 ls600hl with 285k with a cvt that is starting to engage properly. My local dealer is afraid to change fluid saying it’s lifetime….no fluid last forever and I’m think it will correct the issue with fresh fluid. Have you had any issues with this at the dealer and if so did any Indy shops do it?
It is lifetime fluid which means the transmission lasts the lifetime of the fluid. Change the fluid equals longer life. Hybrids should have the fluid changed every 30k miles due to copper contamination as the motor windings shed copper into the fluid.
W221 design is incredible and timeless, however, the unreliability issues are just too much to handle. The LS460 has some issues (oil consumption) but the Lexus reliability > Mercedes design
Agree the W221 can be trouble, & if you do have something go wrong it's going to take time and money to sort out & parts are insanely expensive. In my part of the world Mercedes dealers won't even touch a car this age anymore so you then have the problem of finding a competent independent mechanic to work on it if you can't fix it yourself. The 1UR-FSE, like many modern engines it uses low tension piston rings and low viscosity oil, by design - so it will use oil - this is done deliberately to improve fuel consumption (& Mercedes do the same thing) - but it's got a massive oil capacity, so you won't need to top it off between changes unless it's been neglected and has excessive wear. I have a GS460, I've never had to top it up between changes - mind you it only has 88,000km on it so far.
I recently bought a 2007 es350 after my 2010 es350 got into a accident. So is my 2007 es350 supposed to have a less tight steering wheel compared to my 2010? I do feel the difference and I thought that should be something I take to a mechanic. Or is the “less tight” steering wheel in 2007 es350 just how it is
Bushings and control arms significantly help with steering tightness so check and see if that needs replacing. Also something as simple as an alignment can do wonders for a vehicle and really transform the experience so maybe look into that as well
i still believe bad reputation doesnt come out of nowhere so i would still get a lexus , i mean ive never heard of a independent lexus only shop and i like the looks of the LS even in with the newest gens , i love the new LS interior and the new S class is not for me . Yes 💯! German cars for the first 5 years (better to LEASE only) after warranty their super high risk, too many electrical problems etc. 50k miles is also the cutoff.. Lexus will last over 300k miles if maintained w. Proper synthetic oil changes and scheduled maintenance. There is a 2002 ES300 on RUclips like mine with 590k miles w. Original motor and transmission. Amazing

Mercedes quality is no where near where it used to be, everything feels cheap, and everything breaks. More then not, people buy these "cheaper" expensive mercs for status symbols, but don't realize how expensive the required maintenance is, hence why most of them driving around are total junk. Lexus is the way to go in retrospect, Great quality and Toyota reliability, they last forever even with not the crazy rigorous maintenance.

I've got an 07 ls460 with 193k, its still an amazing vehicle. I have no doubts that it could make it to 400k. The smoothness of it has to be experienced, everyone that rides in it is blown away when I tell them it's 14 years old.

I bought a 2007 LS460 with 97k on it for $12k. My mechanic did pre-purchase inspection on it and couldn't find one thing wrong. He was amazed. Best used luxury car for money. Most comfortable interior of any car I've been in. Oil changes are more expensive than typical cars because it requires 9.7 quarts of pure synthetic instead of usual 5 quarts. Lexus designed the engine to last forever. My brakes work perfect- linear and strong. The ride is buttery smooth and quiet. My mom has been an E Class lover for last 20 years. She gets a new one every 50k miles. One ride in my LS460 and she is talking about her next car to be a Lexus!
While the LS460 is more about luxury than handling, it still is surprisingly capable at going quick and getting around turns. Just don't expect it to feel like a BMW 3 series.

I haven't had any brake issues. We did replace some of the control arms because my wife accidentally jumped a curb hard enough to bend the aluminum control arms .

I have a 2009 ls460 and I tested the top speed and got up to 155, not sure if my limiter was removed or what but I was very surprised. It also was extremely comfortable and still quieter than majority of cars at that speed.
Top speed of LS460 is electronically limited to 155 mph. There is a way to remove electronic limitation and car can go 174 mph. Either way, police will take away your car- lol.

I have driven both. I like the MB but it nickeled and dimed me to death. I've had absolutely zero problems with my LS. The reason high end German cars resale drops like a rock is because of the cost of ownership. Everything is expensive to maintain or repair. I sold my first LS to a friend of mine for his father. It has over 300K on the clock and it's still running just fine. Lexus really sweat the details when the LS was developed and it shows. There is a reason Consumer Reports always has any Lexus LS at the very top on their rating scale for dependability. There drop dead reliable and are great driving cars that will last for years if you take care of them. Get a MB S class if that floats your boat but be prepared to spend lots of money to keep it running.
Bought a '09 s550 4matic in '13.
39k miles...as of today 120k Miles .... No issues other than a shock replacement since i purchased it..... just spent 4k replacing motor mounts ...Trans mounts....a couple minor oil leaks and other services.. pretty much maintenance I neglected the last couple years because I didn't drive it much at all .. considering it's almost 13.5 years old and I've had it 9.5 years.. Solid car

No doubt some truth in your statement - but also Mercedes, at least post-GFC, are deliberately designed to fall apart once the factory warranty has ended - they can't take any abuse at all, and even if you do spend the money on the required maintenance, that's no guarantee it's not going to start to have a lot of very expensive issues to fix. Mercedes just want the owners to buy a new car every 3-5 years, and have no care at all for the second owners. Bean-counter engineering.

I checked both and bought the Lexus. Been researching them for months and driven a few. I really wanted a super clean, 1 owner, L and this is that. I've been cleaning up the exterior and love it. I had a loaded 2000 GS400 for 10+ years that was trouble free and an all around great car. I bought the GS after owning a CPO 2000 BMW 528iTa and was sick of visiting the dealer for electronic gremlins - and it was a super clean 1 owner, all BMW maintenance.
Kevin - I've been cleaning up the LS if you want to see it. Removed stickers, pinstriping, cleaned with claybar, used a DA buffer for swirl remover, sealant, polished windows and exterior lights... Up next is figure out brakes, tint, probably tires and alignment and checking out customizations or enhancements.

But yeah, obviously Lexus beats them with reliability if you compare it with an LS460 (which I proudly own BTW fully optioned haha). TBH I might have gone S-Class if I wasn't a student at the moment - looks like it has more character and poise, but Lexus comes real close in my opinion and coupled with its reliability suites me well :)
I think that most people just defer the maintenance on these vehicles. I got my 08 LS 460 with 100k miles for $11.5k and put in another $8k primarily in deferred maintenance. Replaced spark plugs, cleaned fuel injectors, rotors and brake pads, brake sensors, TPMS sensors, new stock wheels and tires, all the front control arms, airbag ECU and two rear seatbelts, and a few other minor things. But I bet that the next 100k miles, I just need to do oil changes and coolant changes and I should be just fine.
Yup that's the problem with these big luxury cars some of these previous owners defer important maintenance and we find out the hard way how much parts really cost on a flagship car

I have a 2012 LS with 160,000 miles on it. It runs perfectly, is in perfect condition and looks like it’s only a couple years old. It’s the most comfortable quiet reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned and I plan on driving it as long as it runs. It will probably outlast me.
I was actually shopping for a Lexus ES350 or a GS, I spent 6 months looking at used vehicles. None of them were quite right, to me. AND THEN - I discovered the LS. Quickly realized it wasn't the ES I really wanted after all. I test drove 3 LS 460's, finally got a 2017 with 69,000 miles for $36,600. Love it, love it!
I just purchased a 2011 460L with 100,000 mi on it. It feels like I'm floating on a cloud, whatever it might need I will fix it I too hope to keep this car for a whole lot of years I don't get vehicles often. But this one is truly amazing already.

Great review Kevin, bottom line is they are both great cars, and both have their great points. Expensive vehicles are expensive to fix when they break. The Lexus may break less, but if it does it will rip your ass pocket just like the Mercedes. A lot of the equation is which car does the person buying it prefer. My theory, get what you love, buy the warranty and ride. I truthfully bought my LS 500 because my wife loved the way it looks and drives, and still does, not so much thinking reliability. I think people buying these cars just love to, and are able to buy the most beautiful cars, and they are both gorgeous. Your rolling heavy either way, get what makes your heart beat, get the warranty, and ride, I would be proud to own either or both.

Never really liked the headlights on this era of S class but the 2014/2015 the best looking headlights and overall looking car that’s why it’s my favorite looking latest one to me looks ten times better than the new S classes

@@silentbutdeadly3466 the 550 is a nicer looking big body. It grew on me the last couple of years. That car might stand on its own. The LS430>220 the LS all day. The S class 221/222 looks good in its stock form you don’t really have to do anything to it maybe just a tint. While the LS460 might need some 3 piece wheels or air suspension to slam It, a lip kit. The w221/222 can be a young or old mans car. just don’t get the one with airbags and bring a scanner to run and check for codes.
Stick with the Lexus 460. The S550 loses 63% of its value in 5 years and it isn't as reliable as the LS460.
A customer came to my job once to get a new battery..She had an 2003 es300..the car 570,000 miles on it...I couldn't believe it..(although my Lexus has 270,000 miles and had no problem).. So I asked her,"Have you had any problems with it?"..And she replied,"Only when I let mechanics touch it.' Lol Great cars...My mechanic(worked with me at Toyota) ..Told me..all you have Todo is changed All Fluids every 7 months...I've followed his advice and has never had problems underneath the hood..

@@eternalafterlyfe Mine is an 06 with 141k miles. Got it for 7500 about at the beginning of this year. Pretty good pricing with the plethora of people i've talked to, as well as according to my own research. Mine has hella highway miles on it. Be sure to check control arms (especially lower), struts, and the rear subwoofer (through the years the foam gasket that surrounds the speaker deteriorates and makes it sound like ass. Dealership will tell you that you need a new subwoofer which is around 500 new. The subwoofer just needs the foam to be reapplied to it, there are so many threads on clublexus with parts and step by step instructions. Mine costed me $20 and a couple hours of my time. Also try to look for the ones that have navigation as it also includes the mark levinson sound system which when properly plugged into sounds amazing.

My 2010 s550 from mercedes of houston started falling apart at 20000 miles. It had a wheel sensor recall that they patched until warranty was out and then wanted 2k per wheel to fix it right. I drove it to a cash for clunkers when the tranny quit at 66000 miles. Back at lexus and never looked back.
Whoever owned must of rode it hard find it hard to believe tranny went out at 66,000 miles , and was falling apart @ 20,000 cap 🧢

Great review. I tend to gravitate towards the Benz (especially ones with ABC) because they ride and handle well so there's some sportiness despite the thing being as big as a house plus they have this super solid and heavy feel. The Lexus has a more relaxed "I'll get there when I get there" feel to it which will be a nice thing if you have a long commute or are constantly on the road.

@Ste 45 Because they didn't maintain it from the start. The Airmatic and ABC systems are finnicky but issues are well documented and a known fix is available.
My late mom owned 3 Benzes, to her they meant success. Maint and repair cost was excessively high. I still own her last one, 1999 C230 w 110,000 miles...the A/C went out, the radio needs programming to work, and none of the windows roll up without pushing up on them. I know it's old, but - really? Paying for a car in this price class I like to think you're making a solid investment, not just the money part of it, but for future driving pleasure, moderate maintenance costs, and reliability. Lexus is just about the only car in this class that provides that.

I agree with you. We are on our 3rd Lexus (all bought used with just under 100k) and we are always amazed how all of the electronics work perfectly and the engines/transmissions still operate so smoothly and how comfortable the ride is. The cars just feel like they will go another 100k without any issues. I just realized that we've never even had to replace spark plugs on any of them. One now has 175k on it.
@@kentlewis6604 Concur I used to work for a large government fleet of around a thousand cars, trucks, and alt fuel vehicles. The pickups and police cars were American but there were still about a hundred Toyota Camrys (2000 year) and several hundred Honda Civics. Those cars were almost never in the shop for repairs. Meanwhile the Fords and Dodges etc. kept 20 mechanics busy on two shifts. Even the new ones constantly broke, they design them that way!

The Mercedes S Class has always been one of my favorite flagship sedans. They look like money but there is something about the LS that makes me like it more.
@@MeynMotorGroup I would love to hear what your mechanic says about Mercedes reliability. It is funny how alot of people says the same things about these vehicles being problematic as they age. Working in the auto business I hear this alot from mechanics as well. I definitely think there is some truth to European vehicles having certain reliability issues but I also believe proper maintenance and care of any vehicle will help it last a long time. For example, we sell alot of Dodge Grand Caravans at my dealership. They are definitely not known for reliability but customers trade them in with 150k- 200k miles and buy another Caravan!

The shaking that you experience is probably warped rotors on the front wheels. Mine did this--otherwise it was a well-maintained one-owner vehicle, and I assume they got rid of it, so no point in them doing a last round of maintenance. I replaced the front rotors and pads, no more shaking while braking at speed. I got the parts from the dealer (something I've never done before). The cars are known to wrap the front rotors, but it's not a big deal to replace them when needed.
It can be caused by run-out where they haven't cleaned the hub surfaces properly when mounting the new rotors - even a fraction of a millimeter of rust can cause rotor miss-alignment that will rapidly turn into the shakes - and yes, it warps the rotors, so you then have to replace them again. Always be super fussy about cleaning the hubs before mounting the new rotors.
No comparison the Lexus will outlast the S550. My 96 LS 400 still going at 262000 miles, while my 07 S550 broke down 4 years ago at 97k right now its garage junk 😆.

2007 was the 1st year for the 550 motor and had some problems. A couple years later those issues were addressed and they are pretty bulletproof. 👍

This all comes down to how much you drive. If you drive A LOT per year, go with a Lexus. If you seldom drive, then all of the Mercedes issues are mostly non-existent. Hard for all of the issue to crop up when you are barely putting miles on the car.
What a crock of crap. You know damn well the Lexus is much better bargain than the Merc. It will last longer, have less repair bills, and less expensive to operate. Having leather and wood does not mean much when faced with a 4k repair bill.
Yea um you're not getting paid anything to be a Lexus Cheer leader. I already had to drop 4k on my repair bill for my LS460. Lexus never did anything for us and it's no better than any other full size Euro car on the road

At around the 10:30 time frame, it shows the steering wheel. It does NOT have the dynamic radar cruise control (DRCC or otherwise known as adaptive cruise control), since it's missing the button for it on the right side of the steering wheel (it's blank). If it had it, it would have a symbol with what looks like a car and a radio signal. If it doesn't have DRCC, it also will NOT have Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). Very few LS460's had the DRCC, and even fewer had the LKA. You could get it, but it was an expensive option. The hybrid version LS600h was more likely to have it.

sorry ...but my 04 LS430 got now 440k and never needs anything .... heck i like it so much i purchased 14 months ago a 2nd 06 LS430 for the day my daily dies ...sitting and waiting since !! nothing like the 1UZFE and the later 3UZFE motor !! they just runnnnnnn trouble free forever !! ...also had a daimler S430 that always needed something .... and parts for it are so not cheap ! hence i sold it !
The Benz is classy, I like it’s body arrow dynamics compared to the plain boxy LS. I also like the interior on the Benz. The Lex looks like a Toyota. But it definitely sounds more reliable and has a more solid build quality. Both great looking cars, if I had to choose I would go with the Lexus

Between these 2 cars in Africa we will go with the Benz. African conditions are hard on the LS 460.
After 60 years of owning top quality cars; and racing too - this is a no-brainer! It has to be Lexus every time! In fact, I'd choose a 500,000 mile LS400 over any Mercedes-Benz; even a new one.

Lexus LS460 anytime. It's a well made car. I luv the 1st Gen. Lexus LS400 as well.

Oh and btw, has the s class really a quieter interior ? Most of the reviews say that the ls is quieter and smoother but handles worse and eats bumps a bit more. I feel like most complain about the wind noise issue, but the ls should have less tire noise and traffic noise, right ?
Yes I've heard Lexus is a rare site in Europe especially with the taxes there so most buy German I understand.
Yea S class is the quietest car on the road all the cars in this segment will satisfy but if we are going nit pick then yes points go to S550.
LS does usually have wind noise but not this one fortunately but regardless S550 was just a hair better in that regards I'm talking like very finate percentages of difference these are the quietest and most comfortable cars on the planet
I was a Mercedes and VW owner for 20 years. German cars do have it all well put together ride, comfort, design. But after my 10th year I started to kick and punch dents in the cars. Quality is garbage. I now own a GS430 and its no problem at all but the Japanese style is not my flair but this is the better vehicle.

The 2013 Lexus was more of a refresh. It was not a completely new design. It continued that way to 2017. 2018 was the true new Lexus LS since 2007.
The 2014 Mercedes S class a completely new vehicle

To me, luxury includes reliability. Sure you can get a warranty on the MB, but if it's in the shop a lot, that's not luxury. I own a 2013 LS460 AWD without the air suspension. It's a masterpiece.
I have a 2009 ls600hl with 285k with a cvt that is starting to engage properly. My local dealer is afraid to change fluid saying it’s lifetime….no fluid last forever and I’m think it will correct the issue with fresh fluid. Have you had any issues with this at the dealer and if so did any Indy shops do it?
It is lifetime fluid which means the transmission lasts the lifetime of the fluid. Change the fluid equals longer life. Hybrids should have the fluid changed every 30k miles due to copper contamination as the motor windings shed copper into the fluid.

W221 design is incredible and timeless, however, the unreliability issues are just too much to handle. The LS460 has some issues (oil consumption) but the Lexus reliability > Mercedes design
Agree the W221 can be trouble, & if you do have something go wrong it's going to take time and money to sort out & parts are insanely expensive. In my part of the world Mercedes dealers won't even touch a car this age anymore so you then have the problem of finding a competent independent mechanic to work on it if you can't fix it yourself. The 1UR-FSE, like many modern engines it uses low tension piston rings and low viscosity oil, by design - so it will use oil - this is done deliberately to improve fuel consumption (& Mercedes do the same thing) - but it's got a massive oil capacity, so you won't need to top it off between changes unless it's been neglected and has excessive wear. I have a GS460, I've never had to top it up between changes - mind you it only has 88,000km on it so far.
I recently bought a 2007 es350 after my 2010 es350 got into a accident. So is my 2007 es350 supposed to have a less tight steering wheel compared to my 2010? I do feel the difference and I thought that should be something I take to a mechanic. Or is the “less tight” steering wheel in 2007 es350 just how it is
Bushings and control arms significantly help with steering tightness so check and see if that needs replacing. Also something as simple as an alignment can do wonders for a vehicle and really transform the experience so maybe look into that as well

i still believe bad reputation doesnt come out of nowhere so i would still get a lexus , i mean ive never heard of a independent lexus only shop and i like the looks of the LS even in with the newest gens , i love the new LS interior and the new S class is not for me . Germans in the 1st 5 years ,Lexus to the grave.

Yes 💯! German cars for the first 5 years (better to LEASE only) after warranty their super high risk, too many electrical problems etc. 50k miles is also the cutoff.. Lexus will last over 300k miles if maintained w. Proper synthetic oil changes and scheduled maintenance. There is a 2002 ES300 on RUclips like mine with 590k miles w. Original motor and transmission. Amazing

Have a 2006 ls430 105k miles. Looking for 2017 ls460. Need more modern features. Not selling the 430 very smooth ride.

That LS460L is a fool. It has a refrigerator in it and reclining back seats. Very hard package to find.

Would definitely go for the S550! I had the LS460 and totally wish I went for S whole time! LS had some issues such as ac going out, transmission issues and catyalic converters

Mercedes quality is no where near where it used to be, everything feels cheap, and everything breaks. More then not, people buy these "cheaper" expensive mercs for status symbols, but don't realize how expensive the required maintenance is, hence why most of them driving around are total junk. Lexus is the way to go in retrospect, Great quality and Toyota reliability, they last forever even with not the crazy rigorous maintenance.

50k miles later or even less, S550 will cost 3-6k repairs every 3 months.... never buy a used German car. They are meant for lease not longevity.
