I'm here because I'm an engineering student, lol. I'm really surprised and a bit bummed out that almost every single letter is pronounced incorrectly in academia, and I have to perpetuate it. I guess we could say that the letters took a life of their own as math/physics symbols, different to how they're originally pronounced in their motherland.
Thank you for clearing this up, my late father is from Greece and I’ve been having a mental breakdown about how Wikipedia says χ is pronounced “kai” instead of “he”.
It's the English pronunciation. It's the same as how the greek alphabet π/pi is pronounced as pai/pie in English. You can call it a 'Wrong representation of something original' lol.
It is very refreshing to hear the Greek alphabet pronounced the correct way. I knew I always heard them wrong. My spidey senses proved right. Great video.
My son is 3 and he started to tell me the greek alphabet, I had no idea if he was right or not, but it turns out he was. I finally found out this is where he learned it from. Trust me it works
I'm in Greece right now to visit my family. I start proper greek school in September but this is really good to understand as I can speak some but not read or write. Thank you 👏🏻

yeah, Russian, English and math all borrowed from the greek language. pretty cool, it shows the link between Ancient Greece and modern studies and culture.

Hi +Matthew The pronunciation of the sound of the letters, so the pronunciation of Greek in general, hasn't changed between modern Greek and the relatively recent Koine Greek, when compared with far more ancient Greek. Perhaps you mean that the names of the letters are different? The Greek letters are always, always named wrong in English, for example, English speakers refer to the letter Bβ as beta (bay-tah) when in reality it has always been pronounced as vita (vee-tah) in Greek since ancient times. Keep in mind that any non-Greek native teaching Koine Greek could inevitably make pronunciation mistakes. Kind regards, Team GreekPod101.com

Hi +Leticia G, It's not easy to list rules that will make spelling in Greek a straightforward process and actually this is a very common question we get from students. This is why we have created the following videos that might help a little with the /i/ and /o/ vowels: ruclips.net/video/W16WCeM0yes/видео.html ruclips.net/video/n7Wq0hoOi44/видео.html We haven't made a video for ε and αι because it's more difficult to come up with patterns. So there's no U sound in Greek? Or you use some "convenient" combination of two? Delta kinda sounds like z or I mishear it? I'm Georgian and I can differ quite confusing sounds ( for example in Georgian we have 2 different letters for English sounding k and Greek/Russian sounding k - ქ კ, same for t - თ ტ and p - ფ პ). In Georgian, we had different letters for same sounds too but linguists and important people of literature in 19th century decided to get rid of extra letters from the modern alphabet and now we have exactly one letter for one sound so I wonder why won't Greeks do the same? You still can teach those letters if you care about legacy but use one version of the letter in every word.

It is gamma and it is pronounced like "w" in "where" and "why" only harder and dryer, with less oo. If that's hard then try this: pronounce it as a soft G, sort of like 'Gh'. Try to start the sounding of a normal American English 'G' but don't quite close your throat/palate with the back of your tongue.

@Martin Janowicz no it was not. The B sound did not exist in the Greek language. People who use the B were calle Barbarians.
I'm a scientist and am also bummed at how wrong we are.
@Martin Janowicz You are way wrong. Do a little research before being so sure about something. Please.
"Originally pronounced" is bullshit. Modern Greek speakers don't pronounce these letters "correctly" either.
Youw absolutely right my dear lady. I love that english accent in ( "π" 3,14) in english accent remember me a.... pie!
This was helpful in many ways, but especially for showing us how to write the letters. No textbook has ever shown me that.

Two "I", Two "O" nice job, Greek.
Three "I" : Eta, Iota and Upsilon...!
Oh we have a lot more then two "I" sounding letters
we actually have Ιι | Ηη | Υυ | Ει ει | Οι οι| and they all make the same sound....''I'' !!!
The Greek language makes WAY more logical sense that modern English, it's simply that you're not used to it.
Ancient Greeks had only 1 I sound and 2 o, the ο and ω like today, but the ω was double oo
It’s a mix of Russian, English AND A FREAKING GEOMETRY I LOVE IT😂🔥
