    Finally a Greek teaching the pronunciation of Greek letters. Shocking how the USA and UK websites have got it wrong and still pretend to know the actual pronunciation. So glad I chanced upon this video. Going to take me a whole lot of retraining.

      @OmiloHellas  4 года назад +11

      Kalisprea Jona, we wish you good luck with the Greek Alphabet. For sure your stay in Greece will be so much nicer when you can read Greek. About your questions, the I, H and Y have exactly the same pronunciation, so no difference, but the spelling is different. So depending where the letter is in the word, or in which other combination of letters it is used, you will need one of the three...But do not worry about it for the time being..just remember they have the same pronunciation. (like in English "eat" and "meet"...same pronunciation, different spelling...)

    It's kind of amazing how many Greek letters we English speakers are completely mispronouncing!

    • @OmiloHellas
      @OmiloHellas  2 года назад +2

      kalimera, for people not speaking or learning Greek, it is normal they have no idea how "omikron " is actually pronounced in Greek, and many do not even realize it is a Greek letter. The same goes for beta, delta, etc...
      However, if somebody is interested in how this Greek letter omikron, or several other letters of the Greek alphabet are pronounced in Greek, by native teachers, then this video will teach you the real thing :-) Many greetings from Athens. www.omilo.com

      @@OmiloHellas I am mainly interested in the Greek language as it relates to the Greek New Testament but the correct pronunciation is critical for the kids. I live in a town called Ypsilanti. Many cities and towns are named after Indian (native American) tribes, chiefs, etc. ( and so on). A lot of the rivers and lands are the names given by the Indians. I thought Ypsilanti was an Indian name. Boy was I wrong. There is an American movie called my Greek wedding. Have you seen it? It is really funny.

      in Greek there are two types of 's', as also explained in the video, with the letter 's'. if the 's' comes as the last letter of a word, like in ananas, the you wrote the 'ς' as
      'ς'. if the 's' some in the middle of a word,, then you write it as σ ... Τake a look at the video at minute 6.10

    what do we use if we want to say u in "put"?

    • @eumixx
      @eumixx 4 года назад +1

      This sound is represented by the diphthong "ΟΥ - ου" i.e. the combination of the letters Omikron and Ypsilon.
      For this sound, like in "foot" and "put," it's always "ου" in Greek. As soon as you learn to read, you will be able to pronounce everything correctly.
      Careful: Ypsilon upper case looks like "Y" and lower case looks like "u." For example: ΛΥΚΟΣ - λύκος (wolf) .

      This vowel doesn't occur in modern Greek, so in some (most) cases will be approximated, as noted by k. Michalidis below, as 'ou' as in "Πουτ δε κοτ ντάουν!" or as a long 'ah' as "Πάμε στο Μακ Ντοναλντς για να πάρουμε ένα Μακ Φλάρυ.

    The DELTA in this video sounds like an english "th" sound? is it "th" or is it a normal "d"? or some kind of in between?

    • @OmiloHellas
      @OmiloHellas  4 года назад

      The English "th" sound is the Thita ( θ), and the delta is in between "d" and "th"...needs practice, but there is a difference. The "d" also exists, but is written as "vt", and explained in other videos or during the Alphabet course (the combinations of vowels and consonants)
