yeah and grenades and mortars were DEVASTATING in this version. And the MG42 as well. This was without a doubt the hardest close combat game. And the most well made.

I played this for umpteen hours in the late 90s. I remember once getting absolutely befuddled by a "super Stewart" that somehow managed to knock out two panthers and two Infantry squads before of all things a mortar halftrack immobilized it, then every rifleman I had left swarmed it. Good times.
I'm glad it brought back the good memories! I remember playing as the Germans back in the day, and an AVRE pulled up close, and when that thing shot the building my Strumgrenadier were in, I lost the whole team and couldn't figure out what they had done! this was the most solid and polished close combat game that they made. CC3 was great but felt like they rushed the release. Truly every man counted and often battles would be decided by only a handful of men.
Very true! The depth they went into here to capture all the elements of morale, limited ammo, strengths and weakness, was awesome. I need more experience in the other games, but I do know that CCIV was pretty enjoyable the last time I played it. I'll have to do some more playing I guess!

You got wayy lucky with that last tank. Also, remember to use mortars! Hotkey them to a number so you can give all three a fire mission at the same time.
It may have been luck. It may have been the greatest strategy ever devised by the greatest CCII player... we'll probably never know 😆 I don't know why I'm just now realizing that you use programmable hotkeys. This news will change my life. Of course, I'll have to remember to use them, but OMG. I play tons of strategy games. They all have programmable hotkeys. I guess I figured that since I didn't know about them as a kid, it never crossed my mind that they might exist. How are they set. It's pretty commonly ctrl+#. Do you know if that works in CC?
No, this is a new, current system. It has been running fine without any compatibility issues. The game is from Steam, and I don't know if it has been patched to work on modern versions of Windows, so I can not say if an original CD version would run the same.
On steam, they released the "Close Combat Classic collection" set that has all the original 5 games. The also have one that is the close combat complete collection that's 14 titles or so. They have been running for me on Windows 10 and Windows 11 without issue or compatibility problems.

Lol, right? It's always the unassuming fellow, too: the mortarman, the cowering reserve, etc. and they wipe a whole infantry squad.

@@RubberDucky087 SSI took over after CC3 and those ones were terrible. Matrix did a great job with the re-releases though.
