I've been at war with fruit flies and use those products also but I think their winning, wife has birds and she feeds them fruit daily.
So basically you are putting out gnat bait and attracting them.
I have one similar to it. To catch flies, I put a small dap of honey or jam on the sticky pad. Seems to work pretty well. If you try it let me know how well it works up there.
