Buying a Sega Mega Drive Game Every Year For 32 Years

- I’ve bought a Sega Mega Drive every year for 32 years. Some years it’s just been the single game and others it’s been multiple games every month. I love Sega’s 16-bit console ever since I saved up my pocket money to buy this gaming beast. While growing up with it there were always games, peripherals, and add-ons that wish I could have had and dreamt of having everything for the console. 33 years on and I’m close to fulfilling that wish.

If I had a top list of my favorite Mega Drive games, Phelious would be on that list. It's a super fun shooter and really stand out from the crowd with it's Greek Mythology / Fantasy theme.
Yup, it's so well paced as well.
Imagine coming home into your domain, and you see SEGA video games all over your walls?
16-Bit heaven! 🎮🤩🎧📺
I think my 13 year old self would have wet him self.
Learning about the cart variants is one of my favorite things about your collecting journey Mike; it's fascinating how minor things can be but then getting the reason why behind it.
It's the thing I love about collecting. It's not just collecting it's learning the history of something.
Thank you so much for keep supporting my fav console, I wouldn't expect a guy like you could keep supporting it, You're my favorite person when it comes to love SEGA Genesis/Megadrive.
Thanks, I appreciate you saying that.
This is awesome! Love seeing you and your growing collection.
Thanks, its coming together nicely.
Nice going mike, was supposed to get life on earth and life on mars last week but the courior got confused and sent it back to sender
What? Gutted. Did they not offer you the chance to collect it from the depo.
Your collection is incredible, a real dream. You’ve also inspired me to pick up a few games over the last couple of years. Your knowledge and recommendations are highly appreciated 💪🏻
That's great to hear. It's such a great console to collect for.
You didn’t fall!!! I bet it hurt once
I have a Genesis 1, got it for Christmas in 92. Sonic 1 was the pack in and Sonic 2 was brand new. It was an awesome Christmas. About 10 years later I did get a SegaCD 2 at a flea market, I remember it was cheap, back then no one wanted retro games. It worked but I hated how the Genesis 1 was about 2” longer than the base for the SegaCD 2. And good luck finding the extension. I think within that year, I was back to the same flea market and saw a Genesis 2 for next to nothing. Aesthetically way more pleasing, it became “my daily driver” for playing Genesis. Literally the only reason why I bought my Genesis 2
Amazing! I would love to find something like that now at a flea market.
Thanks Mike, this is a great all-rounder episode.. great games and a prized collection, a mint-condition MD2 console in box. Phelios looks awsome and Twin Hawk reminds me of Bee Wings back in the day.. we used to play these SHUMPs the whole weekend and never tired.. wish I still have that stamina.. LOL
😅 I do find Shmups intense.
Good episode RGB, and what makes your channel stand out is the authenticity of your passion for finishing that collection.
I have to say it's a real feat. Keep going, and I'm looking forward to seeing you finish the set.
Good luck finding replacements for your Mega CD & 32X.
One idea may be to put a tracker up with the titles and tin you're still hunting, and we can support you with links to anything that shows up across the UK. 👍.
That is a great idea. I'll put that up for the next show.
I haven’t been a follower for long, but I have to say I really enjoy your enthusiasm and expertise regarding Mega Drive. Keep it up! I’m 4 games away from a complete US Sega 32X collection myself, and 28 games away from a complete PAL OG Xbox collection, so it’s very nice to see how others are doing with their collections.
Oh very nice. Im collecting the 32X collection in the background.
@@RetroGamerBoy PAL Mega Drive 32X games are really tough to find CiB. I think I have 12 out of 25 PAL 32X games at the moment, while NTSC sits at 32 out of 36 and Japanese Super 32X 10 out of 18. Good luck!
I love the colour of your videos, amazing camera and audio too.
Thanks, I always cringe at it. I wish I could get better sound.
The Genesis was the first console I bought with my own money. I have lots of good memories from that console, but for some reason, I'm only interested in collecting games from the Xbox/PS2 to Xbox One/PS4 era.
Different things drive us. Collect what you enjoy.
Great watch and well done for building the collection!
Thanks.
This feels like an extra special episode Mike. I've said before it seems like just keeping track of the full set is quite a job in itself. But really great stuff and amazing to see all these mini sets coming together though shooters is no mini set. That has to be around 80 games maybe more.
It's a big sub collection for sure. The next big one to try complete is the sports collection.
Awesome collection, Mike. I like your enthusiasm and passion in every episode you make😃 A true collector👏
I appreciate that! Thanks.
Some really good pick ups Mike I’m love seeing your journey trying to get a complete MD pal collection and I’m trying to my self this brings back so many great memories great video Mike
Awesome, I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome video like always Mike. Love your passion for the greatest console of all time. Sega mega drive / Genesis !
🤘😝🤘
Congratulations Mike🎉🎉
Thank you.
Great collection, good luck with the remaining games.
Thanks.
Been watching your videos for must be three years now, being of a similar age, growing up in the UK and owing a Mega Drive + Mega CD back then... this is all amazing stuff. I really should comment more.
Wish I could have built up some kind of collection like this but had to sell my gaming gear several times as ive been living abroad and moving from country to country since the early 2000s. So thank you for sharing all this Mega Drive nostalgia and gear, the MD will always be my desert island console.
My all time favourite has got to be Starflight, the experience playing that as a teenager blew my mind, do you have a copy and have you played it?
I love Starlight, it was No Mans Sky before No man's sky. I've also managed to build up a complete version. Great game 👍
That’s some very sweet pick ups dude. With my full set of Master System I’ve got a fair few variations also.
The variants are a real rabbits hole.
@@RetroGamerBoy oh yes they are
My girlfriend recently came across 13 games for the mega drive from a lady simply clearing out. She asked to me, do you want them 😂 obvs! Anyway now I want to start my own collection of games I used to own. (Out of 13 maybe 4 good ones) I hope I’ve not started a expensive journey 😅. What I would do to have what you have! Simply amazing what you have! Incredible 😎
It's doesn't need to be super expensive. Buying carts only or even games without manuals can half or even quarter the price. And you can also buy very good reproductions.
Congratulations mike awesome achievement. Strangely I have that very la Russo game and have managed to find very little info on it
It was published by Ozsoft in Australia. But rather than spend money on a new manual, and sleeve they just took the Genesis game and stuck the Australian sticker on the front and barcodes on the spine.
Awesome info thanks Mike are there others similar?
This is some dedication of Mega Drive game collecting, I wish I had the financial resources to collect every PAL Mega Drive game. You got a great collection. I’d love to know where you got your latest addition to your Mega Drive collection, especially Batman which is definitely not worth the £50 it goes for, you definitely have a good eye for a bargain, if I can get some Mega Drive games for the prices you’re paying then it’s start collecting Mega Drive games again but right now I just got a Nintendo Switch Mario Red Edition and I’m focusing on getting games for it right now. What a collection of games for the MD. I hope I have as much Switch games eventually if the prices are reasonable. Great content mate.
Ya that Batman game is over priced. I just did not buy it until I found it at a more reasonable price. I think Mega Drive prices are also dropping as people cannot afford to buy at these prices.
What i like about Phelios is that its NOT a space shooter as there arexa dozen of these. I like shooters (and other games with fantasy/mythical creatures in it and Phelios is ABSOLUTELY great. The European cover art too!
Totally agree, the world and theme are quite unique.
Another great collectors edition mike👍. It's totally awesome you got batman for £15, being the smart one and waiting. We collectors all need to only pay reasonable prices. Also nice pickup with the megadrive 2 at £40. You're awesome Mike. 👍
It is a waiting game, but that can make it more interesting. And seeing prices fall is great for collecting as well.
Prices seemed to go up for 2 reasons. 1. Covid making people stuck at home, reliving their childhood, and buying the games/accessories they didn't have money to as a kid. 2. Grading/Auction sites artificially inflating the prices games are actually worth. (with some grading companies charging $50+ just to grade) and then putting them in a case which means you can't even play the game.
I don't like people that collect games JUST to collect them, I mean fair enough if you play the games you collect, or at least intend to at some point, but to just collect them to have a "complete" collection, annoys me, since they have games they NEVER intend to play, which someone else would.
@@RetroGamerBoy I've never been one to jump in at the deep end when it comes to prices. Grabbing a bargain or fair price always makes me more appreciative of what I own. Like many of us here I buy to play and have fun with my boys. Seeing my boys enjoying what gave me enjoyment as a kid makes me so happy.
@@lmcgregoruk I saw a video of a guy with like Every colour of the GAME CUBE, BOXED and UNBOXED. I'm talking like 🤔 15 + varients. That's around 30 gamecubes just gathering dust. I'm not a jealous guy at all. My 1st thought was "how selfish" other people could be enjoying those consoles and actually playing on them. It really annoyed me to be honest. When we see Mike showcasing his pickups you can see the excitement in his face because he can't wait to play his games and consoles. Real passion 👍
Good stuff right here 😌👍
Thanks, It's so fun collecting for this system.
Wow! I love that vintage 1990's Sonic The Hedgehog t-shirt Mike. Those shirts regarding him in the early years were sooooo cool. I also have the twin bed sheet and pillow case with him on it that I still use on my bed. 8^)
Anthony..
I had something similar. I remember when Sonic was a massive craze.
Great video and under 50 to go 😀👍👍👏👏👏, cant believe Batman was missing and it’s one of my top 10 megadrive games purely for nostalgia. Phelios is defo on my list and going to bite the bullet on that soon and castlevania too, Keep going and catch up soon, cheers Jonathan
There are some big hitters that I'm scratching my head on how I'm going to add them. Fatal Fury 2, Death and Return of Superman, Daze Before Christmas.
Excellent haul there 'ol chap! There's something about paying good money for games that you know you won't enjoy that just doesn't sit right with me, so it just proves your dedication to the cause.
I play everything, but also the physical nature of the games also mean that even the shite ones can still be enjoyable to look at.
what a nice channel glad i found you, new sub here! :)
Awesome 👍 thanks
Absolutely awesome, buddy, and it reminds me of the final straight with my master system full set. Good on you pal and take your time would be my advice as well 👍
By the way, I played fire shark for the first time a few weeks ago and had to buy a copy. It's brilliant ❤
Yup it's great, I love how easy it is to get into the game.
Congratulations Mike 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you 🤘😝🤘
Congrats on being a true passionate md fan 😊🎉
Thank you
I definitely dig your passion for the Sega megadrive/genesis.
Thanks, it's such a great console.
Absolute ledge. My dude.
Thanks, it's been a fun month for Mega Drive collecting.
I love you channel, but i wonder. How many games are Genesis exclusive? Will you start collecting them when you have a full PAL collection? And which 2 games do you miss from EU?
Yup, I will go after a Mega Gen collection eventually. Fatal Fury 2 and Death and Return of Superman are two that I'm struggling to get.
Im starting to collect psp games. Would love to have your level of collection one day
I love PSP games. I have a small collection of games and consoles for it.
Your collection ...well, that's how you do it. Never knew that about rbi 94.
Have you got a colour manual for gauntlet 4 ( if you have that game )? I have the black and white one. Wouldn't mind a colour variant
I have the fat colour manual.
2:10 The European 4 way connector, are you talking about EA's 4 Way Play, or Sega's Multiplayer 4-player adapter?
The EA one. I have also got the first variant of the Sega four way.
Do you have also some Genesis exclusives?
Not yet. I'm focused on full PAL first.
for a second I thought you had bought the £15,000 megadrive 2 from ebay 😂
🤣 what a waste of money that would be.
That's realy cool to have this Sega intact😃👍. And we've bеen working on our Sega game and now we're creating intro video for the Level 13, which will happen in London and have this working level title: "All Great Troubles Go From Lil Britain". So I'm wondering to ask you, Mike, as a citizen of England who was born and raised there - Do you see how your country has been changed if you go for a walk, for example, to the streets of London or Birmingham? Because I was there in 2017 and it was such a cultural shock for me to say atleast, especially after all those truly genious Soviet Movies I watched when I was a kid about England - the homeland of Sherlock Holmes, doctor Watson, Merry Poppins, doctor Jekyll and all those nobble passionate British White Males with their dangerous adventures. But when I got there instead of my expectations I was wandering around hordes of imaginary characters from one infamous Agathe Christie's counting rhyme😂😂, and unlike in her famous detective novel - they weren't going to diе off one after another, but on the contrary, looked like they considered themselves as a masters of your lands unless they came across my way where I always showed them Russian attitude and view on things👊🏻👱🏻🇷🇺 when I saw some of them were walking by with white girls of Britain. But, anyway, I would like to know from you as the citizen of his Mother-Country on what's your opinion on this matter? Whether you see how your country has been changing? And whether you want all this to turn back to it's previous form. Or maybe you think that it's okey and can be kept on going the way it is now?
I actually grew up in Africa, my parents are British and I came to the UK when I was 12. I would say that the UK has become more multi-cultural at least in the big cities. Some of the smaller towns and villages are more traditional.
@@RetroGamerBoy So If you was born in Africa like Yohanesburg, Саpetown or Rоdezhia (current "zimbаbve") than your parents definitely know what kind of "сulture" all these сrеаturеs can bring in into any White Country where they have been bringing to. We must start creating the projects targeting our younger generations not to even recognize the threat - since it's too late, but starting to act already now аgаinst this current thing. Because it's getting worse that we couldn't even imagine. I call it A "Reversed Рrораgаndа" and the video-game industry is one of the сruсiаl areas wherе We can roll it out upon those our White Children who can be rescued still!
I seriously thought you already had a full MD collection
@StRoRo I’m trying to get a complete Mega Drive pal collection it’s definitely not cheap and it’s not easy that’s for sure but it’s great to see Mike try im with you Mike good luck mate
Not yet, quite a way to go though.
Have you ever reviewed ‘ Stormlord ‘ for sega genesis ?
I have not. My Genius game experience is pretty poor at the moment🥲
Hold up.
If this is the first time you put a Mega Drive 2 in your collection than how did you play Paprium while you had the game borrowed?
I thought that game was supposed to only work on the Model 2 Mega Drive?
Scalpers trying to grab those rereleases really make it difficult to enjoy the hobby sometimes.
Which makes it even greater when I run into retro gamescon and find all the retro bit rereleases for MSRP
It works fine on the MK1s. I think it's only the very first models that it has issues with and after market consoles. The very first MDs do have compatibility issues with a few modern games.
Have you got the clam shell James Pond?
The original? If so yes.
I moved to china from Newcastle in 2013 and sold everything but....ive started again 😂 but because im over here pal is out of the window. And being so close to japan everything here is jp region and its so cheap to collect for. I have load of famicom, pc engine, megadrive, mark 3 , mark 1 and some super obscure stuff too
That's amazing, what's your favourite piece?
@@RetroGamerBoy I love my altered beast on famicom boxes and my complete pc engine altered beast too
This Real sega mania😊❤
🤘😝🤘
Never seen or heard about or seen a front loading mega drive
The Amstrad Mega PC? Forgot the exact name, but that loaded front. There was also the Pioneer laser drive system. It played laser discs, mega CD games and Mega Drive games
There was a more "official" PC combo called the Teradrive too that was black and manufactured by IBM
Like the guys say below, there are quite a few.
Do you sell any sega device with sonic games?
I don't sell games I buy them.
Sega is amazing
Sadly I’d say Sega WAS amazing. Would love a new console!
Sega is great.
1 game a year for 32 years means you have.........hmmmmm...... 12 games? Im good at maths
Very good. I've bought at least one game every year.
No falling down at the end of the video?😅
Nope, I've taken too many head injuries 🤣
Never played a MD2 ? did you live under a rock in the 90's lol
Nope, I had and still have my MK1. Also once I learned the sound chip was not as good I did not feel compelled to own one.
4:04 again Mike rly ?
I always buy my games to support indie Devs, and sometimes I get sent review copies as well so I end up with 2 👍
Sega demi god
🤣 I'm not sure about that. 😁👍
@@RetroGamerBoy Yes you are way better than the immortal johncock whatever
