Yeah, and it's been that way for almost 20 years since the plug n play craze of the 00's, the Atari Flashback consoles, and then the crappy AT@Games SEGA Genesis mini consoles with piss poor sound that also took original Genesis carts with barely working IR controllers. So this is nothing new here, just the quality of the products have improved along with a slight price increase. However I feel using OG hardware with flash cart solutions if you can afford it, or emulation will always be better.
I was kinda under the impression that the whole mini console thing flopped hard. I remember like 3 years ago Gamestop was clearing out the PS Classic for 20€, which considering the 100€ MSRP is insane. Even Nintendo who are not exactly the type to give any huge discounts cut the NES Mini price in half. Maybe in Japan and the US they sell like hotcakes, who knows.
@@KiinaSu I think if I remember right the PlayStation mini flopped mostly because they picked a crappy lineup of games but I don't feel like going back to check.

I don't know if you guys are aware, but Tectoy, the official representative of Sega in Brazil, relaunched the Sega Genesis for the brazilian market in 2017. And it's the real deal, not a Pi-like mini computer running games through an emulator. It comes with over 20 games pre-installed and accepts Genesis cartridges and everything. Also, since the console comes with a micro SD slot, you can load ROMs in a micro SD card and play them on the console. Yes, it's an official product with an SD card to play games from ROMs. With that said, the hardware is not 100% the same, given the sound chip is not made anymore, so Tectoy had to replace it, meaning the sound is not the same as the original Genesis. The console price was 500 BRL at launch if I'm not mistaken, which is less than 100 USD. Unfortunately, it's not listed on Tectoy's site anymore and I don't know if they are gonna sell it again.
I picked up a pair of wireless 6 button controllers for my original genesis mini. They even have a home button built in. Add in project lunar, and you can't go wrong.
Ok, new game for the comment section guys: In italian SEGA means "saw" but, somehow, we like to use completely fine and innocent terms to indicate dirty stuff. In fact SEGA means not only "saw" in Italian, but also "j*rk off". With this in mind, i invite you to rematch the video. Have a nice day.
Yeah they didn't care to make a push button one for us yanks.. lol. Maybe a modder out there will figure out how to wire a 3d printed push button for the rest of the world.
On Brazil the official Sega vendor on the 90's made a new edition on 2016, but it was based on the original hardware, not emulation, you could even engrave your name on the console, i got one on the time :D
Well, if they're doing a Sega CD mini as mentioned in here, I imagine the Saturn/Dreamcast could both be up as well. Though neither of those consoles did that well, so a retro version might not be worth it. Especially as the Dreamcast was Segas last hurrah in terms of consoles.
@@Resimaster That's not surprising in the slightest honestly. Anything beyond the genesis just didn't sell that well. So I don't think they've get a good amount of sales for any of the later systems.
As a young kid I grew up with a Sega Megadrive (Genesis 2) that had a region mod. The absolute most fun games I used to play on it were Gunstar Heroes and Blades of Vengeance
I'd love to try one of these out. Now, I hope at least someone else can relate to me here, but I never really grew up with any of these old consoles and games, and that's exactly why I find them fascinating. I like to try old games not because of nostalgia, but to see if there's anything good I missed out on.
Here in Brazil, de Sega Genesis is called Mega Drive. And the Genesis 2 was actually the Mega Drive 3 here. The Mega Drive 2 was exactly like the first one, just minor change on the reset buton color and the 16-bit label. I think it was just a marketing strategy, to promote Sonic 2 (that came with the console). But some people say that the Mega Drive 1 didn't had the TMSS chip on it, while the Mega Drive 2 had, while other people say there are versions of both with and without it. So idk, tho.
I would absolutely love a Dreamcast iteration of this. Although the problem is I don't think there would be that many games that would be considered classics. Shenmue for certain, maybe Power stone, a few others. Then again, a lot of the previous mini consoles seem to have just shoveled entire franchises on to their systems for the sake of filling out space on the box. I can still vividly remember the Christmas morning when I got my Dreamcast. I had been obsessed because the ads for the original shenmue have been running Non-Stop. I never told anybody I even wanted it because money was tight so I figured there wasn't any point. When I unwrapped it I wanted to know how they knew I even wanted it because one of the games they got me to go with it turned out to be Shenmue. Everyone insisted that they had no idea I wanted it, the console or the game, they just got it because they thought I would enjoy it.
@@Greshgore Oh there's plenty of classics for the Dreamcast. Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi 1 and 2(will probably require to change the OST tho), Virtua Tennis 1 and 2, Rez, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Soul Calibur, Omikron: The Nomad Soul, Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, Metropolis Street Racer, TrickStyle, Shenmue 1 and 2, Rayman 2, Chu Chu Rocket, Puyo Pop Fever (released only in Japan but localizing it wouldn't be very hard), Marvel Vs Capcom 2, RE:Code Veronica, Ikaruga, DOA2, Sega Rally 2, King of Fighters 99, Toy Commander, maybe you could throw some of the the NBA2K, NHL2K and NFL2K /2K1 /2K2 in there too. You could probably also emulate some Naomi games such as Monkey Ball. And some Atomiswave games such KOF XI or Metal Slug 6, if SNK Playmore wants this of course. You could easily fit a DC mini with 30-40 games absolutely worth playing including 20 classics. The problems are twofolds : 1) it requires much more power to be emulated correctly, not to mention that to this day DC emulation is far from perfect. 2) it'll need some beefed up flash storage, as Dreamcast games tend to occupy 1GB each, not to mention Shenmue occupying 3GB and Shenmue 2 occupying 4GB. A 64GB chip would probably be necessary, further increasing the costs of the DC Mini.
@@Liam3072 you're right I stand corrected I forgot how many of those were actually Dreamcast titles. I even was going to include Sonic Adventure 2 in there but I literally forgot for a Split Second that it was a Sega system so I thought there's no way to get the rights to Sonic LOL
Mine showed up about a month ago. Go to the settings and select Staff Credits. When the credits are running, you'll also see the Sega CD boot up screen. It's even got the music and Sega CD logo doing all that wacky stuff.
I can't recommend the SNES mini enough. Fully hackable WITH retained interface (yes all the systems with any games that fit on the disk) so all the saves, box art etc work exactly like out of the box. Also, the SNES controller works great with Genesis games, just the different ergonomics. Oh, and the hack is super easy to install and all the box art downloads automatically...
It would make me happy if it actually could play original games like those AtGames systems you would see at Dollar General that came preloaded with games and your could play your OG ones with a built in cart slot. I knew the emulation was crappy on those systems, but I can't see why that can't do that but better....Which only cost "$30" when I last saw them and came with 80 games.... ...Vs these tiny unmodifiable systems with a select set of games that are clearly a quick nostalgia cash grab vs something that could be really special and make people want to buy a crap ton of them.
In my part of the world we called it the Mega Drive, which OBJECTIVELY sounds cooler! Altered Beast is amazing. Mortal Kombat too. And we can’t forget Street Fighter II!
Not putting in a store where you can buy other games is a thing that should get people fired at Sega. Just like with Nintendo's mini NES and mini SNES. They're sitting on the games doing nothing with it except suing everyone. Then comes the opportunity to sell them aaaaaaand they don't. They could have made tens of millions of dollars with it AND satisfy the customers.
OMG...I remember Testing for them in the Sonic and Night Trap days. It's a real eye opener as to how Games were made. All the crazy R&D gadgets I saw was awesome.
When we developed these titles, it was not any crazy, just very nerdy ! The real excitement was getting the most out of these systems, support as many colors as you can, using more space for textures
"I was a Sega kid" we can no longer be friends I still don't know. Is cool and all, but yes, a raspberry pi can do this job easier, and you can 3d print a Genesis shell for it. I'd consider buying the controllers though!
Back then I loved the challenge of beating Sonic games with an Atari Joystick since the controller ports were near identical (had to whittle the joystick cable end to fit). No pause button but you only needed one button for jumping.
HOLY CRAP! I remember a long time ago i used to play sega with my cousin. They were fun times. All this time later i could never remember the game we played. LIGHTNING FORCE! This vid just blew me back to when i was a kid playing games with my cousin.
I'm not gonna lie, this popped up on my feed and after some internal debate, I watched it. And I really enjoyed it. You really were indepth in reviewing everything. The only thing that appealed to me in the genesis 2 mini was the sega cd games, I was unfamiliar with the other games so I may have to check them out. I'm going to watch more of your vids though, im always on the lookout for more stuff to watch.
I had the Gen 2 from my earliest childhood all the way up to my teen years. everyone else i knew had n64 or ps1-2 and i was still on my sega. they never just stopped working like nes or ps . i would later own most of the other consoles but i will say sega was by far gave me the best memories. i still remember seeing sega games in large cases that would swing left or right (kinda like how some poster displays in walmart are) . its actually kinda wierrd to think my dad was the one buyin the games so he could play. i would see him come in with a bag full and i would just look through the books in them while he was playin. he would be up late at night as i am now lol. odd to think back in those days my dad and sometimes my stepmom would play video games and my dad does still to this day and im 35 this year.
THANK HEAVENS for stretch mode. I use my mini consoles on a 4:3 CRT TV in the den for authenticity and on the ones that don't have it I end up with a squishy tall image. With stretch mode I get a perfect full screen image just like I had when I was young.
They have Night Trap but they don't have Phantasy Star IV? Who did this list of games? And, yeah, Lightening Force is AMAZING. Loved that game back in the day!
Holy crap, this actually has some banger games. Clayfighter, Desert Strike, Gain Ground, Ristar. My Sega Channel days are flashing back hard right now. Only thing it's missing is Battletoads, Worms, Road Rash, Skitchin, and General Chaos.
I impulse bought one of these after I saw the modern vintage gamer video on it. The two sound modes are kind of what sold me, though I don’t have the Mini 1 but would love it. It is expensive tho after also getting a second controller, cost upwards of $140-150 after expensive shipping from Japan through Amazon. I still haven’t even opened mine though but it’s sitting next to me in the sealed box
the mini console industry is really capitalizing on the fact that their fanbase is overly nostalgic and is now old enough to have money themselves 😂

It's so frikin' CUUUUTTTEEE💕💕💕💕I'm so buying this, thanks Anthony!!
Worth mentioning the 8Bitdo M30 2.4G Wireless gamepad and Retro-Bit Sega Genesis 2.4 GHz Wireless Controller do work on the Sega Genesis Mini 2.
The sega mega drive was really cool, surely brings nostalgia to my face 😂
Ok, new game for the comment section guys:
In italian SEGA means "saw" but, somehow, we like to use completely fine and innocent terms to indicate dirty stuff. In fact SEGA means not only "saw" in Italian, but also "j*rk off". With this in mind, i invite you to rematch the video. Have a nice day.
Anthony being a sega kid feels unsurprising but still surpriss
The power button being wrong is because this is a reskin of what was released in Japan and they had that kind of switch on theirs.
Yeah they didn't care to make a push button one for us yanks.. lol. Maybe a modder out there will figure out how to wire a 3d printed push button for the rest of the world.
When I was a kid, megadrive was the shit.
On Brazil the official Sega vendor on the 90's made a new edition on 2016, but it was based on the original hardware, not emulation, you could even engrave your name on the console, i got one on the time :D
Hope someday they will release one for the Dreamcast 😋
Well, if they're doing a Sega CD mini as mentioned in here, I imagine the Saturn/Dreamcast could both be up as well. Though neither of those consoles did that well, so a retro version might not be worth it. Especially as the Dreamcast was Segas last hurrah in terms of consoles.
@@entryofemotion12 Sega looked into doing a Saturn mini but said the R&D and manufacturing costs would not make it feasible.
Å
Here in Brazil, de Sega Genesis is called Mega Drive. And the Genesis 2 was actually the Mega Drive 3 here. The Mega Drive 2 was exactly like the first one, just minor change on the reset buton color and the 16-bit label. I think it was just a marketing strategy, to promote Sonic 2 (that came with the console). But some people say that the Mega Drive 1 didn't had the TMSS chip on it, while the Mega Drive 2 had, while other people say there are versions of both with and without it. So idk, tho.
Really hope they make a Dreamcast one. Saturn has no chance but that would be cool also.
It's even got the music and Sega CD logo doing all that wacky stuff.
why you need that boot screen?
We lost him guys 😔
I can't recommend the SNES mini enough. Fully hackable WITH retained interface (yes all the systems with any games that fit on the disk) so all the saves, box art etc work exactly like out of the box. Also, the SNES controller works great with Genesis games, just the different ergonomics. Oh, and the hack is super easy to install and all the box art downloads automatically...
i'm early for once
Me too
Me three
Me four
It would make me happy if it actually could play original games like those AtGames systems you would see at Dollar General that came preloaded with games and your could play your OG ones with a built in cart slot. I knew the emulation was crappy on those systems, but I can't see why that can't do that but better....Which only cost "$30" when I last saw them and came with 80 games....
...Vs these tiny unmodifiable systems with a select set of games that are clearly a quick nostalgia cash grab vs something that could be really special and make people want to buy a crap ton of them.
Man this threw me back. I loved playing Vectorman 1 and 2 on my Genesis
Great video Anthony!
And thanks for the Project Lunar Mention :)
Anthony for Prime Minister!!
i have a dream that one day sega comes back and makes a new console 😢
In my part of the world we called it the Mega Drive, which OBJECTIVELY sounds cooler! Altered Beast is amazing. Mortal Kombat too. And we can’t forget Street Fighter II!
Choplifter, Kid Niki Radical Ninja, Altered Beast, Toejam & Earl, Golden Axe, Earthworm Jim, Shinobi. Talk about childhood flashbacks
0:03 Something my ex told me somehow makes it into the script *ding*
"I was a Sega kid" we can no longer be friends
I still don't know. Is cool and all, but yes, a raspberry pi can do this job easier, and you can 3d print a Genesis shell for it. I'd consider buying the controllers though!
Anthony makes ME happy.
Back then I loved the challenge of beating Sonic games with an Atari Joystick since the controller ports were near identical (had to whittle the joystick cable end to fit). No pause button but you only needed one button for jumping.
This would be cool for 25 minutes and then I’m done with it forever until the next 20 years
sure brings back memories, i still have the original Genesis and Master System in my closet with some games.
So...what aren't you going to lie about?
USB cable made by Sega, museum piece in 30 years .
Genesis kid! Me too. I knew I liked this guy.
This is a true retro gamer❤❤❤
I really hope we get more mini consoles like this in the future. There's lots of potential to do other systems like this.
THANK HEAVENS for stretch mode. I use my mini consoles on a 4:3 CRT TV in the den for authenticity and on the ones that don't have it I end up with a squishy tall image. With stretch mode I get a perfect full screen image just like I had when I was young.
I bought this because I heard it was one run only. I can't play it until christmas, but it looks so awesome.
They have Night Trap but they don't have Phantasy Star IV? Who did this list of games?
And, yeah, Lightening Force is AMAZING. Loved that game back in the day!
MINI DREAMCAST PLEASE 🙏🙏🙏
Holy crap, this actually has some banger games. Clayfighter, Desert Strike, Gain Ground, Ristar. My Sega Channel days are flashing back hard right now. Only thing it's missing is Battletoads, Worms, Road Rash, Skitchin, and General Chaos.
This is worth getting just for Herzog Zwei...
So, where can it be bought in Canada? Can't find it available anywhere, and the US Amazon listing doesn't ship it to Canada.
I had a Vectrex, a Master System, a 7800, and then a Genesis. It was weird having a popular system. Actually renting games...
