- A playthrough of Readysoft's 1996 animated interactive movie for the Sony PlayStation, Brain Dead 13.
Brain Dead 13 is a pretty fantastic 90s homage to the 80s Laserdisc classics like Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. It might not be the work of Don Bluth and co., but it's an impressive effort nonetheless. It's colorful, extremely well animated, loaded with hilarious and violent humor, and it easily exceeds the standard Saturday morning cartoon in its production values.
It's also the sort of game that just screams, "It's Halloween, play me!"
The game was released on several platforms, but the PlayStation version was the only version to ship on two discs instead of one. While doing this imposes some rather annoying and frequent disc swap screens, the PS1 game features better quality video with fewer visible compression artifacts than the other versions, in addition to dramatically improved sound quality. The voices are all crystal clear.
But when I say it's violent, I mean it's violent. As in, a Teen rating would have been pretty unlikely back in the day if the review board actually bothered to look at the content in the game. A true credit to those moral crusaders, though, this title received the K-A rating.
I didn't die in this playthrough. It's a clean, beginning to end run with no mistakes (which taxed my patience to no end since the gameplay is 100% trial-and-error), but if you'd like to see the all the ludicrously graphic ways in which Lance may lose his life, check out this compilation I put together: • Brain Dead 13: Fail Sc...

Let's give some major props to Lance. Dude can diagnose a computer problem like nobody's business, run fast enough to stay ahead of a murderous... goblin... thing... and do it for long enough that marathon runners would be begging for a break through all kinds of terrain, think quite literally on his feet and react fast enough to dodge innumerable death traps and monster attacks and keep his head together long enough to take down an evil genius.
Dude's a legend.
His name is Lancelot Galahad, you know he has plenty of experience running away from bullies lol
@@Lovinia1 What, really?
@@rowanthearchitect3227 lol yeah. Poor kid.
@@Lovinia1 Yikes. Still, he seems to have done well for himself.
@@rowanthearchitect3227 he strikes me as the “daddy’s money rich boy only working to keep his allowance” type, but yeah he seems to do pretty ok lol😂
Fritz tumbling down the stairs with everything but the kitchen sink flying out of his pockets is some bona fide, premium, Pre-2K humor! 🤣
In *1995,* this came out during the same year as *I.M. Meen.*
In *1996* worldwide, this came out during the same year as *Resident Evil.*
Fritz himself needs to be in a fighting game with how versatile he is. Lol
Right?! He's got to be one of the best cartoon henchman ever. And weird as it sounds, he has some ridiculously charming animated quirks in the scenes where he murders you over and over again.
Fritz in Smash Bros. when
@@NintendoComplete But ya also have the other guy…

I would feel like that Fritz would be a perfect Mortal Kombat guest character
28:40 ULTRA INSTINCT LANCE?!
This game truly deserves a Remaster or a re-release! ^^
You know I agree.
I hope it comes to the Switch someday, like Dragon’s Lair Trilogy.
T'was ported to iOS in 2010, but sadly was deleted, (see comment below by Maniac563). Maybe one day someone can make a different game and right this one's wrongs?
I hope they remastered it and make this cartoon series and movie sequel flim to and yea
I agree how is this not on ps4 yet?
Without the blinking arrows or flashing objects like Dragon's Lair, it's got to be pretty hard to figure out which arrows or action keys to hit.
Imagine being a kid not familiar with the concept of this game, playing it for the first time.
So it's like the original Dragon's Lair arcade, without the blinking arrows and flashing objects.
@@MegaAnimazing but also with unlimited continues because it's not trying to get your quarters~
dude i had a hard time as a kid knowing what to do haha
@@YurothehototThat’s likely why the game gives you infinite lives
Fun fact: The App Store rated the game 12+ (an equivalent to either a T or E10+ rating) due to its violent themes.
Huh, like how the original (intense, dark, scary, bloody) Watership Down got rated PG?
What about that vampire gal's b**bs
5:12 I like how he said "Heya pal!"
Friz is a real killing machine
"Hiya, pal!"
It's almost Halloween, and this hilariously violent FMV game has long been a favorite of mine this time of year. (Be sure to check the description for the link if you'd like to see the death scenes!)
NintendoComplete WOW! The animations are very impressive.

I can’t believe it, I never thought that someone else would actually beat the PlayStation version of this game, let aIone have a copy. I was the one of only people who actually beat this game without the use of an emulator or cheats. All I can say is that from being a relative of some of the people who made this game is that I hope everyone that got to play this game had a enjoyable experience with it
No way, that’s so cool that you are related to some of the staff for this game! I’d do just about anything to be able to contact them and ask them some of my most burning questions about this game. I played it many years ago and it has always stuck out in my mind as one of the most unique and rememberable interactive experiences I’ve ever encountered. Take care good sir/madam/whatever you’d like to be called, and please tell your relatives that I (an internet stranger) think their game was awesome!
You ever have one of those games that you never played, but you vividly remember watching someone play? My friend's older brother had this game and I will never forget that opening sequence when the gremlin guy tries to rub his eyes with his hook hands, because that was the point where my friend's brother would have to restart every time he died.
I remember the first time I saw this game I was with my parents at a PC shop, when we bought Creature Shock. I remember it because of the great artwork and unique PC box. But even at a young age, me and my brother found the lack of gameplay footage on the box to be a warning sign.
I loved Creature Shock! Argh, I remember the box for this, that big tall yellow rectangle. I hated it, it totally messed up the flow of my shelf! Same with the Gabriel Knight box with its weird spiky shape.
@@NintendoComplete Lol! Kinda resembles the new Xbox. Yeah, Creature Shock is awesome! The end boss is absolutely amazing and still my favorite to this day. I remember how nervous me and my brother was when playing it when the boss just walked towards you, spelling your impending doom.
lover the ps1 start up sound.
I had this game... now it's impossible to find, or very expensive when I don't have the money.
3:44 Powerpuff Girls sound effect
Halloween is almost around the corner and im watching this for the fun man
Never played this but I remember seeing the ads for it in game mags.
*deep SNIFF*
Smells like childhood. No one I knew ever rented this game besides me.
I feel so bad for that kid who got scarred for life because he didn't know what to do at the first "QTE." God bless his soul.
Ya know, Lance never got payed for fixing that machine in the beginning and he was likely gone for hours.
How is going to explain all this to his boss?
Good question.
I guess he will be honest and explain the whole thing.
@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941 "Goddamnit Lance, that's the third time this month!"
@@CreepyPersonCube. Lance: Cut me some slack.
Boss: Better not mess up....OR YOUR FIRED!
Going off context clues he's probably self employed.
@@PaigeLTS05A free"Lance"r if you will.
I've definitely heard of this game...mainly through some compilations of the infamous death scenes.
This seriously got a 'KA' rating? Damn, someone at the ESRB must've been slacking off that day.
There were a couple of games that slipped through with a K&A rating when they should have been rated higher, but since E10+ didn't exist yet, they were just rated K&A since that was the closest thing.
Earthbound definitely is quite heavy and is questionable for a K&A rated game, so when it was rereleased, it was given the a T rating which fits the game more.
The extremely butchered localization of Persona 1 called "Relevations: Persona" slipped through with a K&A rating as well, despite having profanity and even a reference to voyeurism in a dialogue from a NPC.
I know there's probably more games that slipped through, but those are the only two I know off hand.
You know that brain guy says he isn't average but he doesn't do anything powerful that's all friz
Kinda hard to do much when you're a floating brain in a jar
Happy spooky month my man, things are definitely gonna be different this year, but its nice to know you still are willing to do another brain dead 13 playthrough. Happy halloween.
Ty man, you too.
i'm only 10 minutes in but honestly i fuck with this. never really expected to see 90s grossout humor combined with early video game light gore. i kinda love it. also goddamn the booba on vivi.
wow i can't believe you played a nostalgic game that dragons lair loved the video
So happy to fond a no death run on youtube, this games comfy to watch, but not so much to play (like I want to be the guy!)
little psycho going massacre style 25:44
Fritz would have made a good addition to smash
Wow they went wayyy overboard in certain segments, and at least most versions of dragons lair gave you a vague indication of what to press. It certainly looks like a charming novelty, but this looks like it would quickly drive you to madness with repetition 😂.
15:43 - slow the video by 0.25 - the orange witch becomes the blue one.
Fritz has a tough skull since he’s hit with a hammer
this looks like a really hard "QTE" without the on screen button prompts, how far back is the player sent upon death or a Game Over??
You get unlimited lives. You just get sent back to a checkpoint.
Do you ever noticed that a lot of these old fashion games and cartoons at the time always have no pinky finger
And when your a kid at the time you don’t seem to care except when you see them again as a adult.
And you ask your self how can I miss that⁉️
I wish this game was around in my country back then, it wasnt sadly....looks so epic...
25:21 Bigg'ins!
I Need The Nintendo Switch Port for the Brain Dead 13!
i hate the Fact there's no way to indicate which button your supposed to press it's more on like solely Muscle Memory and memorizing which is the right button back then i was like randomly pressing any buttons hopefully i got the right choice
Brain Dead 13 for the PS1
Aww, man. By the thumbnail, I thought this might be a point and click adventure like Discworld or Blazing Dragons. I've never heard of this one.
Love Fritz and Vivi

Lance reminds me of Shaggy.
Awesomeness
This game is excellent! I bought this from an electronics expo for 10 bucks in late 90s or early 2000s! I wanna remake of this! Xbox and PSN both offer dragons lair but not this or space ace
I got that psone console for Christmas 2002 I was 13
Tried running this on retroarch a few years ago, but I couldn’t get the disc swapping to work
So...is this a game or...a movie?
Both, pretty much. It plays just like Dragon's Lair.
NintendoComplete Ah ok
I'm pretending as that monster with the weapons lel
Didn't the 3DO version come on two discs as well?
Insert disc 2!? So fast lol. Nah I grow up with this game. Never beat but it's a classic.
Why did they never put this on psn?
Woah 😨
DaiamondoRobotto 5th Anniversary
This game have more than 1 disc?
apparently, i’d assume it’s because of the game’s size (yet again the ps1 version takes up only one memory block out of 15 (or 17?) which doesn’t seem like a lot)
So besides you know, dying, what is the punishment for dying? Is there lives or is it unlimited?
You get unlimited lives.
Hey, great job!
Wasn't the game actually released in 1995?
Great walkthrough.
Some of the ports came a year after.

When ever it’s October again in 2021 will you be able to do this play through again on the 3DO, Jaguar CD, or Phillips CD I?

Well then, happy birthday :)
So in order to play, you would have to keep flipping from one discount to the other almost constantly?
11:00
this isnt a game its much a cartoon
It is a game. It's interactive therefore a game. It's just a 2D animated game as opposed to something top-down like Zelda or Sidescroller like Donkey Kong.
It's like Dragon's Lair, you're giving inputs to keep the character alive.
Can anyone lend the subtitles for the brain? Couldn't understand half of the stuff he was saying, lol.
Gotta say, some of the death scenes in this game are incredibly brutal, like, there would've been so much blood if it wasn't for the rating.
Edit: 16:59 Why is Lance suddenly terrified now? Was doing pretty alright before :D
Are there any parts in particular that you don't understand? Maybe I can help.
@@NintendoComplete now that you mention it, 5:42 is hard to make out.
