The strong weather system triggered high tides and giant waves along the coast of Santa Cruz County early Thursday, January 5. The storm surges destroying sections of the pier in the seaside town of Capitola and another in Seacliff.
Video footage showed the Capitola Wharf split in half from a section of the wharf collapsing into the sea. Water from the ocean and Soquel Creek surged back and forth carrying massive tree trunks.
In addition, torrents of water surging into seaside homes and businesses that had been boarded up in advance of the storm. The damage was just the latest after a series of storms hit California. The Santa Cruz Wharf was evacuated as waves reaching up to 20 feet pummeled the structure and officials warned spectators to seek shelter.
Multiple road closures also went into effect throughout Santa Cruz County due to flooding. The county urged residents of beachfront homes to avoid ocean-facing windows amid the tidal surge. Many residents came back to rescue what they could from their flooded homes, even though the risk was still there.

Thanks for the clips. However, the footage does not match the description... The damaged piers involved piers in Seacliff/Aptos and Capitola Village, which are both separate towns from Santa Cruz. And Soquel is pronounced "soh-KEL".
Though the effort to post videos is appreciated, too many people on RUclips put little to no effort researching for the sake of accuracy. Accuracy matters.

You might want to Discuss having a Barrier Jetty creating a partial Bay at community meeting , Since the Pier isnt used commercially to unload ships. From the video I can see a natural cliffside to extend a Jetty from the end of it..... This would create new Harborages for Yachts and the like, also more business opportunities to maintain the New artificial Bay area..... Total insurance losses/costs to community would be much less than cost of this type of project.

I worked on this Wharf for a few years. My understanding was that the city was crying poverty in regards to MAINTAINING the wharf. There’s no money. These wharfs and piers were all built in a different era. An era when the USA paid its bills and didn’t have any debt at all.
There are solutions and ways to make it better. It just takes money and that’s all tied up for the foreseeable future🤷‍♂️
Even a larger problem is that it’s located in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Getting any permits to build anything will be impossible.
