Huge waves like tsunami hit Italy! Storm Helios causes flooding in Mediterranean island

Storm Helios has hit Sicily, Italy, due to a depression vortex fed by arctic currents. The regions of Syracuse, Ragusa and Catania are the worst affected by the storm. The Civil Protection has issued a red weather alert for the whole day on Friday. Many public parks and schools of all levels will be closed in Catania.
In Aci Trezza, in the Catania area, the waves have already climbed over the walls and the small port until reach the road that runs along the coast, pouring large quantities of debris. Sea storms also on the Ionian Messina and Syracuse.
Thousands of users without electricity and residents forced to leave their homes. Flooding and overflows have forced the closure of various roads and the interruption of some railway lines. Many cars and buses are stuck on the Mareneve road.
In Giardini Naxos, the via Calcide Eubea was closed to transit, which was particularly hit by waves as high as five meters. The violent gusts of wind would also have knocked down many trees and blocked the operation of Catania International Airport.
The rain gauge of the Syracuse station has collected 290mm of rain in the last 48 hours, of which 225mm only in the last 24. The rainfall accumulations even exceed 400mm in Noto, extending the time frame to 72 hours, considering that the bad weather phase in the area of Sicily.
In addition, huge 5 to 6 m high waves also batter Mellieha Bay in Northern Malta as a result of storm Helios. Local authorities advise the public to avoid travel due to bad weather.
