Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Capcom's 1987 action game for the NES, Ghosts 'n Goblins.
This playthrough shows both loops through the game to get the true ending.
Ghosts 'n Goblins is the perfect game for someone who loves to play games that hate them. The reputation the series carries for its unrelenting difficulty level is well deserved, but very few of the GnG games manage to match the NES version for the sheer ability to frustrate, to infuriate, or to spark a full-on nervous breakdown.
I really like the arcade version of Ghosts 'N Goblins. It's extremely hard, but I always thought that it felt reasonable if you had practiced enough. The graphics were excellent for 1985, the music was instantly hummable, and the whole thing played well.
Now, I know that the NES version has its staunch supporters, however, I am not one of them. The core game is intact, sure, but there are a number of issues with it that make an already trying experience a thoroughly miserable one. I've only ever gotten the true ending to this version of the game three times - the third was when I recorded this - and that's because I've never found it to be worth the effort. It took an absurd amount of time to learn it well enough to play through both loops - there was lots of super careful memorization of enemy spawning and movement patterns in those final two stages!
But anyways, the NES version suffers from two major flaws that turn me off of it. First is the framerate - why does it feel so choppy, and why are the controls not as responsive as they really should be? I'm guessing because this one was made by Micronics. That's not a good thing - most of their early NES games were plagued by slow-down and flickering, and most of them ran at a locked 12fps. Yes, 12. It seems like GnG is probably one of those titles. Things flicker in and out of view so that sometimes you can't see projectiles as they're flying at you, and on rare occasions enemies disappear entirely if there are too many sprites on-screen at once. The other issue is the number of glitches in the game - I was lucky to not run into any major ones while I recorded, but the game is riddled with problems that make the game even harder. Sometimes you'll end up being killed by a ladder, while other times you have two bosses waiting for you instead of one. That can end a good run in a hurry, let me tell you. Few games can test my patience like this one does.
Still, I love the arcade game, and I suppose this version could have been worse. It should have been much better, but that's neither here nor there. I don't have a lot of nostalgia for this one - I hated it as a kid, but as an adult I can see some merit in it. Not enough to make me ever want to play it again after this, but I certainly can't accuse it of being as bad as many Micronics games: that honor goes instead to Ikari Warriors and Athena.
At least the Engrish is fun.
That's about the best endorsement I can give the NES version of Ghouls 'n Ghosts. The arcade game is great and the sequels on the Genesis, SuperGrafx, Wonderswan, and SNES are all well worth playing.
With Halloween coming up so soon, I figured that I might as well pull the trigger and upload this one.

Fun fact: When I was little, I had surgery done and had my adenoids taken out and missed the rest of school. As a gift, my parents got me this game. I loved monsters and such so I absolutely loved this game. I managed to beat it one morning before leaving for my grandparents house. Not until the internet did I learn that you have to beat it again. No thanks. I’m not that good anymore.
Sorry about that
As a kid I don't even pass the first level
I call bullshit! I knew a kid like you growing up that always lie saying he had every gaming systems and could beat any game. This all occurred at his grandparents house of course and he played games like shit. His mom called his out one day she over heard his lies.
@@mikey2toes966 How?
Games in the past are very expensive!
How could he own every gaming system?
Exactly that why I called bullshit. No way he could have every game system.
16:49 This game was so hard, Nintendo couldn't even check this game had a reference to literal Satan!
It was the mighty Micronics that developed this port of an arcade classic with Capcom slapped in, and this was before “Mega Man” arrived.
Make rapid progres😂they couldn't even try to fix the typo
@@Musicradio77Networkso mighty that they destroyed everyone's ears by their "wonderful" soundtrack composing. Arcade version was much darker and listenable, at least it had better lower pitch tunes
But what are you trying to say? Even Nintendo didn't pass the whole game just to censor the f bombs and Satan, Rambo was still a Japanese developed movie adaptation that had the "damn" word in the first release, in the revision a version they patched that out eventually
It must’ve taken LOTS of practice and agility to create such a flawless gameplay such as this with ZERO deaths!
Dude this game was so difficult. I found a copy for the Sega Genesis and it's a beast too.
Not a lot, I'd say 10 hours of nonstop rage, it isn't as hard as dark souls
the music was torturing and the sound effects are so high pitched. Even listening to them is fucking earrape
@@bearpoop720 post your deathless run.

The Dark Souls of the 80's...
Foncho every game in the 80's was as difficult as dark souls or even worse
Concept-wise, the games that came close to Dark Souls are Zelda 2, Simon's Quest and Faxanadu.
Dark souls is a lot easier
Devris Vagrantus. Facts!
Noooo, rather, Dark Souls is the Ghost and Goblins of the 2000's
One of the best soundtracks of any NES game. Many times I watched my older brother throw the cartridge into the trash because he would get so frustrated playing it. I rescued it every time.
This game was hard as fuck, but the ending that says this story is happy end is so touching
Not only happy end but strongth welling too
If you do hit the Continue option after the game is finally over, then the game starts you off fighting the Devil. After that, it gives you the "ILLUSION" text, then the game gets *even harder.* I did that once.
@@101Volts💀
Not as hard as Battletoads or Ninja Turtles.
This is by far hands down my most favorite game as a kid back in the 80’s… I would play it late at night on the late summer nights weekends trying to beat it… the creatures were scary and the fights were so intense…. One night I completed it within 7-8 hours the best feeling ever but, the sun came out and realized I haven’t had any sleep since… I slept in but, my mum tried to make me get up and out of the house for the day but, I explained it to her… she was disappointed that I was up late at night but, proud I accomplished something that meant the world to me… she let me get some sleep and I still went out later that afternoon. Great memories.
I remember when I was 10 years old my best friend was over for a sleepover. We were taking turns playing games. When it was my turn I put this game in and proceeded to play through the entire thing and beat the game. (My friend just sat there bored to death because I just kept playing and not dying on this ridiculously hard game!) I was so excited that I’d beat the game that I ran to the bedroom and woke my dad up just to tell him (it was late at night by then). Good times.
And then the NES started clapping.
Lies, there's no way you went to the entire game without dying.
@@garryanderson8049 Oh, I died a couple of times. I just didn't die enough for a "Game Over".
Then you woke up
@@garryanderson8049 It's not impossible. Really. I once got to L4 without dying enough to hit a game over, and that was recent (October 2022.)
The game that will make you say:
"I beat two Satans in my underwear."
Yes. I've said it multiple times.
Ghosts'n Goblins on the NES is miserably hard and riddled with glitches, but people still seem to love it. As for me, I'm a fan of the arcade game, but this Micronics port?
No, thank you.
Coincidentally, I am reading Goblin Slayer right now lol
You also want to know what's disturbing about the NES version of Ghosts 'n Goblins besides the insane difficulty among with the number of glitches it has? The graveyard screen.
According to a website called www.flyingomelette.com, they actually mention how utterly bizarre the graveyard screen is, the one where Arthur and Princess Guinevere are hanging out, you can find it at the Oddities section where it mentions "X-Rated NES???".
So yeah, people back then didn't thought much about it but if you look at it again, you'll also realize how utterly bizarre it is to the point where you got to ask yourself "what kind of drugs where the people at Capcom on when they designed this game???"
+Ancient One That ain't nothing. Psychedelic-themed video games are even worse. Joust by Atari and Jeff Minter's 1984 Psychedelia, for example.

even the arcade had spelling and grammer errors.....
i played this game in 1996, couldnt make it far. In 2009 i tried it again. I failed at school, but i cleared Ghosts n Goblins!
me i never beat beat any NES games even Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt no one when i was young im 35 now and still not beat NES games impossible
bro at this cost? that ain't worth it
But if you done this with no savestates, you are wonderful. I died at least 50 times in the 2nd final level playing emulated arcade version using savestates. This game is torture. Seeing some no damage run is a hell of an experience
Was completely obsessed with this game growing up. This and Blaster Master were easily the two games I played most.
Thank you , I got this game when I was 9 and I could never get past level 3. I tried and tried and nothing . I’m 41 now and I can finally see how it’s done!!
Right
Me too i could never finish it. Too hard 😂
You really gotta be on the ball with this, gotta hit the nail on the head in an instant. Especially with those doggone birds in L2.
Never could beat this game! Very Difficult
То же самое, только в интернете узнал прохождение, маленьким не походил дальше второго уровня!
Wait, I thought you needed the Knife to beat this game!!!
You have to beat the game with the Cross Shield weapon
No, you’re thinking of Gyromite and Stack up for R.O.B. the robot on NES.
I think AVGN sucks at playing
A lot of players have thought this throughput the years, however it is false.
@@danreyes736 Actually, it’s true. The only way to beat Astaroth is using the shield. Knife, Lance and the remaining weapons deal little to no damage.
One of the most hardest nes games ever
Yeah, definitely. The only other game I can think of off the top of my head that I find equally as hard is Mutant Virus. Damn that game can get me heated, even more than GnG.
Yep, though it has infinite continues at least unlike Battletoads, Adventures of Bayou Billy and US version of Ninja Gaiden 3.
@@NintendoComplete battletoads...

@@NintendoComplete Have you ever played Dream Master on NES hardest game ever took me 3 years to clear all levels.
My mom only would allow us half an our of videogames a day. And since this game is hard as hell I could not even make it to second level in my childhood :) It was scary as hell too. Now at 44 yo, I will try harder again. Very good playing, well done!
What's crazy abt living in the nes era, you get hypnotized playing these games. They don't live up to today's graphical standards, but without internet and smart phones, everything abt Nintendo and Sega felt right at the time. Nothing can recreate that or try to explain it
It's hard to believe once upon a time this was the pinnacle of gaming, and I was the sweaty kid....
You mean it’s not?
It still _is_ a pinnacle in gaming. Beating this game's not easy now. I tried beating it in May - June 2022, and I didn't; not just because of the game's difficulty and steep learning curve, but also partly because my Hyperkin NES clones kept freezing on me, or a controller un-paused the game, or I accidentally hit "Start" instead of "Continue." I ended up just using an original NES, which is far more reliable.
I did eventually beat it this month, October 2022, three times. The first time took me 152 deaths before I finally beat it. (And yes, I did the whole beat it twice thing to beat it once, so I actually beat it - three times.)
The amount of patience needed in this game is astounding!
I feel strongth welling in my body today.

It was too difficult to play when I was kid.
This game was so hard that even after you beat it , you still get "Game Over".

When you thought there was no game harder than Dark Souls.
You must have started gaming in the last 10 years if you ever thought that.
@Zach stfu
Bruh all bullet hell game are harder than dark soul
Good show! You made that look incredibly easy!
Soundtrack forever burned into memory.
The fact that this game is extremely hard and glitchy is bad enough, but the real ending requiring you to slog through this steaming pile of garbage twice is just evil.
Its good
Harder like the hell? Yes
But is a good game
Is the dark souls from the 80s
What you did in this video is kind of insane. I played the game and beat it (2nd loop) once, but I don't think I can pull this off. You know games like castlevania that kick your ass real hard at first but after memorization, get much easier afterwards? I don't think GnG is one of them. The RNG in this game is insane and I feel like you need divine intervention to finish this game. Skills ain't enough. That's my experience for this game. I still kind of fond of this game though despite it's glaring flaws, maybe I'm a masochist. Very well done.
This game is fkn hard. I can't finished it when I was a kid. Now there's a nintendo switch remake version. I'll play it again.
I liked this game. I loved watching my eldest brother play this, Castlevania, too.
Lovely memories
This game and altered beast for the saga genesis was a source of so much rage for me growing up, I hate the game but I love it too...
Lolzz, Altered Beasts?? 😂

Yeah! *Ghosts 'n Goblins!!* Classic, _class-ic_ series!! Difficult, but great. I especially love, and grew up with the SNES one, *Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts,* and I'm nostalgia-biased to say that that one's my favorite in the series, as that was one of my very first video games, along with *Super Mario World* and *Star Fox!!* ^^ What a childhood! Bragging aside, this one's alright too.
To this day, we still ponder...Why was Arthur in his underwear with the princess outside in the beginning...at night...? O_O;
prin prin was giving author the suck suck
Did that really happened at the start of the game?
@@Kim-py3iv actually we'll never know
You're not biased. Super Ghouls Ghost is objectively the best in the series.
I still remember when my friend Tim got this and Wizards and Warriors for his birthday and I stayed the night at his place. We tried over and over and OVER to beat it, but to no avail. To this day I've still never finished it, because like you said, it's just not worth it.
I was 9 y/o when I played it, one of my first NES games. I was a kid/teen in the 80', best decade btw!
I love how they make fun at themselves by naming the achievement for killing the true final boss in Resurrection: Congraturations
I just beat it but the game said ''You need shiled'' and throw me 2 levels back even while 1 was enough for the shield. Then I get the shield, go back, beated the boss and game said ''Everything was a hallucination. Beat the game again.'' so who the fuck designed this shit?
This game was Hard as Hell will never forget hanging out at the arcade asking my folks for $20 you can get tokens play all Damm day!!! Thx for the Memories.
Damn man! i can't believe how you just absorb the red devils! You know them too much that they even can't touch you, amazing.
I was screaming "GET THE FCKING CROSS" to my screen at 14:30, you can't damage the dragon with the javelin, and you make it anyway.
At 30:23 damn, you messed it up so hard that i thought you gonna be killed, but there is you keeping going, so godly man.
I came to see this video today because the last night i beated Ghosts 'N Goblins and was the hell, i can't believe i did it, and wanted to see someone doing it too.
3:55. Jumps on the bird and avoids damage. Maybe I just suck idk
@@nathanp928 All the instances where he clips through enemies and projectiles like this look like they could be legit but it is lucky. He is for sure using so many save states, despite claiming otherwise, and just having the replay recorded with an emulator. The play style is crazy and cannot work consistently. Watching someone who remotely knows what they're doing in this game looks completely different from this playthrough.
Very well played, my friend. But the the third loop around is impiosible!
When I was a kid, I played all the through this game to the last demon and died before beating him. Then had to start all over from the beginning 3 more times after that to beat it. I nearly broke my controller in frustration. Hahaha!
32:20 "this story is happy end" wha... 😁

Never was good at it but always loved the music!
This game was ranked number one in the most hardest game. Big pain in the ass.
And it was one of the worst, if not, the worst game ever, and the worst port of the arcade game. Thanks to the mighty Micronics.

@@nathanp928 Nah, there's different points of the game where he loses armor, no cheat by the looks of it. Also remember this game was glitchy af so it may look like he touched an enemy but didn't
wow the axe is pretty powerful. Takes like 1/2 the hits to kill the devils.
Ah, the NES port of Ghosts 'N Goblins. I never saw past the lake part of the first stage of this game because of two reasons back then: 1)because of how God damn difficult this game was, and 2)because I was scared shitless of the zombies and Firebrand back then. However, as an adult and through a cheat device, I have seen the end of the emulated arcade version on one of those Capcom Classics Collection compilations on the PlayStation 2. Anyway, as always, great playthrough.
EDIT/ADD/OFF-TOPIC: In my humble opinion, provided Hollywood ever gets a live-action adaptation of Ghost 'N Goblins/Makaimura off the ground, I think WWE wrestler Daniel Bryan would be the best person to play Arthur.
It's so hard but so fun, I keep coming back specifically to the NES version because in the arcade version Arthur controls like a tank
C'est le seul jeu où je me rendais plus loin à la version arcade qu'à la version NES. Dans la version NES, je n'ai presque jamais réussi à dépasser le tableau avec les monstres dans les maisons
Never really enjoyed this game all that much, but the music was amazing

This was THE HARDEST game ever!!! We could not beat it. Ridiculously hard.
Dude, you make it look sooo easy
This was my 2nd nintendo game I got. I've never beat it. I tried. Ghosts and Goblins taught me that in life, sometimes, you just have to let it go.
When I was a kid this game was the bane of my existence.
I played this game once or twice as a kid. Was never very good.
I grew up on these games! I'm fixin to be 38. I find myself playing games on older consoles way more interest in them than the newer consoles. Right now I'm on a Super Nintendo kick. All my systems up to 6th gen are played on a 27" crt tv. Now the only thing is I wish nbc and abc would bring the Saturday morning cartoons bck! You better believe id have a converter box for the crt! It's nice to see how games have evolved on consoles but for me it will always be them "oldies" that I turn to first!
I remember coming home with rhis game and being absolutely dissapointed that it didnt look at all like the arcade. Tmnt was the same sensation
And to think that even my dad who spent hours on this game as a kid can still only get about halfway through the first level
Weird... The first crow disappeared. The goblins do not turn on speed in no time but after a while when this player is turned with his back to them. Another goblin did not spit when the player jumped over the crow to opposite direction. I wonder how the player jumps over the flying demons so easy.
You want a worse version of Ghosts 'n Goblins? How about the DOS version which is beyond pitiful and has no scrolling at all.

1. Before the key goes to the ground, climb half way down the ladder and stay there.
2. After the key rests on the ground on top of the ladder, climb back up, but just enough to retrieve the key while remaining on the ladder. Then climb all the way down the ladder so that you are one floor below the castle door.
3. Watch what the game does.
