  • Hip-Hop beatmaker Tac Robinson gets exposed to iconoclast Frank Zappa through a live recording of "Dangerous Kitchen" and "He's So Gay" from 1984 (Possibly 1983).
Frank Zappa, the masterful guitarist, legendary bandleader and conductor, consummate archivist, unwilling stage-diver, definitive inspirational icon, and protector of free-speech... He released over 60 albums during his lifetime, and over 60 more after he died. Musicians, artist, and those who treasure freedom of speech all owe a great deal to Frank Zappa.
    (December 21, 1940 - December 4, 1993)
All of Frank Zappa's music and iconography are (as of 2022) the property of Universal Music Group (Yes, even Frank's mustache is trademarked...). We make no claims on such content and is used in accordance of Fair Use practices for education, critique, review, and commentary.

The story behind He's So Gay - the character in the show, whom the song describes, is either not gay (just putting it on "for business purposes") or very sexually confused. Which is also part of the reason for all the fetish/BDSM imagery - that was the image being pushed by vocal gay-rights activists in the '70s and early '80s, which filtered int popular culture via The Village People, Soft Cell and suchlike. (It was said in the pre-AIDS era that homosexuals could teach heterosexuals how to liberate themselves by unlinking sexuality from not only reproduction but, to some degree, from copulation itself).
Then again Frank seemed to regard gay sex as something even more intrinsically hilarious than straight sex (which he also described as "silly" - sometimes he alarmed his women by laughing during sex).
Not that the Thing-Fish story is meant to make sense anyway.

I agree that would be a great choice for Tac to give a listen to. It's such a classic album (that should be in everyone's collection), and likely more in tune with Tac's personal musical taste. -Dr. Smith

He actually used it in a (weeeiird) musical-of-sorts called Thing-Fish, that never got staged, because ... yeah, you can pretty much guess why. 😊

Sadly (today more than ever), smaller minds could never comprehend the concept (or value) of satire. 🙊 Society has always demanded that the masses conform to whatever the person with the loudest voice has decreed as being a vulgarity. 🤐 Getting investors for a Thing-Fish Broadway show I'm sure would have been very difficult (as investors would know that a good return on their money was unlikely). Frank wanted to make art, but investors tend to care more about making money than art... so sadly, it never happened😞 -Dr. Smith

@@TheFreakinReaction Zappa was also not very interested in having the audience enjoy the show as much as he seemed to in the 70s. It would have been a challenging thing to watch, and maybe not so much fun, and like you said: probably no return on the investment. I would have been interesting, but Frank isn't so much a story guy as a musician.

Truly one of the most bizarre conceptual performance pieces ever conceived, though undoubtedly quite a tough pitch to secure funding for. As far as rock operas go, I'd take anything Zappa over titles actually produced like Rocky Horror or Tommy any day of the week. A great reference for Thing-Fish with everything one needs to know is www.zappa-analysis.com/thing-fish.htm -Dr. Smith
