  • Pinky's Blues Sessions Part 1. Location: Firestation Studios, San Marcos, TX. Video features, Sue Foley, Chris "Whipper" Layton, Jon Penner and engineer, Chris Bell. Video shot on iPhone 12 Pro by album producer, Mike Flanigin.
Here's a run down of how we recorded Pinky's Blues, along with my rig, the studio set up and what mics our engineer Chris Bell used for ultimate guitar tone.
Pinky's Blues was recorded in 3 days, live off the floor, with no overdubs and no redos. Everything was played spontaneously, in the moment, exactly like we do onstage. The guitar, drums, vocals were all set up in one large room. Here you'll see us wrapping up the sessions.

I'm a 72 years old French Canadian grandfather from Quebec and I just recently discovered Sue Foley with this album "Pinky's Blues" ! I don't play very well guitar but God knows I Know to listen to it since I was about 13 years old and I make no discrimination, I listen to all genres from Hendrix to Led Zeppelin, to Pink Floyd, to Wes Montgomery, to Al DiMeola, to George Benson, to Jeff Beck (very high in my list), to Eric Clapton, to BB King, to Albert King, to ELO, to King Crimson, to ELP, to Johnny Winter, to Buddy Guy, to Roy Buchannan, to Frank Zappa, to Steve Vai, to Joe Satriani , to numerous classical and female guitarists etc. and most of them I've seen (and listen) in person, LIVE in shows !
But then Sue Foley just appeared in my life and changed all that, the minute I listened to the piece Pinky's Blues I knew that she was the "sound" I was searching for all those years ! Roy Buchannan had a special sound in the time also ! Since, I bought almost all her CDs, listen to almost all her videos, interviews, Tips and Tricks and the pieces she played with her son !
And now for my dream, seeing a show with Sue Foley and Jeff Beck, that would be awesome !

This is a killer album. I've listened to the Pinky's Blues track dozens of times and I can't get enough. The guitar tone on this is one of the best Blues guitar tones I've ever heard, thanks for sharing this. I guess it's all about the room and how you mic it (not to underrate the GUITARIST, guitar and amp!).

You're in good company, Sue. Joe Bonamassa says he likes to play straight through the amp like you. It takes a really good guitarist to play straight through the amp. That's you for sure. 🎸🎸🎸

Do you use a Fender Reverb Unit in front? My personal favorite.
