I had my first motorcycle accident a couple of years ago. At first I looked to blame everything, the camber, visibility, abs, tyres. It was only when I went back to the crash site I truly accepted I just got it wrong. As you say the main thing is to come out of it better than you went in. Glad you're ok and great to see the KTM looking so good.

I was one of those that commented on your original video (I'd like to think in a positive way! 😁). And I was only going off what I saw and what you said yourself.
Get yourself on IAM. It's addictive. It's also saved my arse at least a couple of times. I went on to qualify as a Local Observer and helped people improve (and they all without exception massively improved their ability and confidence - their words).

I’ve been trained highly and passed IAM. Riding something that is inherently unstable means it’s a case when you have an off, not if irrespective of training. We’ve all been there. That gravel patch was wide and only luck from my point of view that I didn’t come off as my back wheel felt it with a “ bottom motion” You shouldn’t feel the need to explain yourself to those who feel their superior. It was a blast. 😝

Nice upload Sam, its great that you had such good support from the guys you bought the bars and stuff from, you deserve it. I did all rhe IAM training years ago (30 of them), a great bunch of people at the kidderminster group, and it was worth it but it hasnt stopped me having a couple of andrex moments on gravel over the years. The thing is, we are all human and none of us perfect riders. I reckon a lot of advanced riders still have the occasional moment, for whatever reason but wouldn't admit to it.

@@SamVBikes that's the right attitude to approach it. I know some IAM guys who's attitude sucks all the fun out of driving and riding for me, they get judgemental about someone doing eg, 37 in a 40 and treat the spread limit as a target. The important thing is you weren't injured nor was your bike seriously damaged. I had much the same experience about 10 years ago on a Blackbird unfortunately I was not as lucky as you. Hurt my lower left leg which got trapped under my bike as I slid down the road. It still causes me pain from time to time, a dull ache, to this day. My BB fairings were mashed one side and the exhaust took a bit of scratching although my leg largely saved much of the rear end. My leathers saved me as did my TCX armoured race boots. My helmet HJC did it's job, a bit grazed on one side. I went to hospital over night but was discharged next day. I was on crutches for about 5-6 weeks. I was then rushed back in by my GP who said my lower left leg was infected and I needed intravenous antibiotics. I then spent a week in hospital. He got me an ambulance as my lower leg was starting to balloon owing to the trauma it had suffered. He told me I could lose my leg. Gulp!
Anyway I am largely ok now. Still riding. Just crap myself when I see gravel. It's lethal stuff. Also diesel on the road especially roundabouts near truck stops or garages when it has been raining. Damage to my bike came to about £3,000-£3,500 so those crash bars you had on literally saved your bike and you. They would be worth their weight in gold.
As you say Positive Mental Attitude is all you can have. Probably like you I just wish on that day I had placed my bike a couple of feet to the left or right and then the front wheel wouldn't have slid out. But what's done is done. Can't turn back the clock, just learn for next time so it doesn't happen again.
Shall look forward to videos from your Wales and French trips.
Have a great ride and time.

Corr you had quite a rough time on that occasion didn't you!! Glad you're okay now though!
It happens to the best of us and I think it's easy to get yourself in a bad mood about it all, especially with so many negative opinions on the socials! Come out better and you'll be happy!
And yes... I still clench a little when seeing thick gravel on the road now 😂😂
Safe riding and thanks for the comment!

    • @alexmorgan3435
      @alexmorgan3435 Год назад

@@SamVBikes Yes first and foremost is your health and walking away with as few injuries as possible. As little damage to your bike as possible is a bonus as a bike can be fixed or if too badly damaged written off. It's only a bike. If you spend the rest of your life in a wheel chair that's serious or you lose a leg or arm or use of them and all this entails. These are all life changing events and not for the better. They impact not only us as riders, but family, loved ones, friends, work, ability to earn money. Sorry about the doom and gloom.
So glad your slide was on the lower scale of damage and you didn't suffer any injury. It could have been so different. All you can do is invest in the right PPE and fit stuff like crash bars and bungs to your bike. Maybe it is worth going for an IAM qualification I don't know.
ATB to you Sam. Live to ride another day.
      As you say FTKBW.

I think all the advanced riding methodologies have some benefits but I've never followed one specific approach to the point of certification. Instead, I have my own approach which has taken elements from lots of training I've done over the years. I've never opted for crash bars but I think on this bike, particularly with the fuel tank/bladder system, it makes even more sense to have them. I will be taking a look at them if I get a new 1290 Adv next week. And finally, however much forward observation you do, it's difficult to both ride at pace and be able to always, mid-bend, correct a bike's trajectory to avoid what appeared to be a large patch of gravel - the Police system of limit point is probably the best I can think of. Anyway, you bring an entertaining angle to the world of bikery so keep up the good work and take care.

Very good points. I'd definitely recommend the crash protection in some form. A guy dropped his XJR1300 a few weeks back at Bikestop and his crash bungs easily saved him a big repair bill.. just from a loss of balance reversing out of the parking bay!

I watched it a few times, and are you sure it was gravel and not shallow damp and gritty road mud/grime? I'm a (very lol ) old biker and I've come off plenty in my time, but usually gravel offs are more 'slow motion' as the bike squirms for a horrible secould before sliding out. You were off in a flash, your tyre lost grip in less than a second. Diesel and shallow mud are much more likely to make you lose grip instantaneous like the video seems to show.

Ignore all the "perfect riders" out there commenting on your riding. I'd like to see them avoid the gravel. The only person there at the time was you so it's only your opinion that matters. Sod everyone else whether they subscribe or not 😂. Only thing that matters was your health ( and the bike of course!)

Fuck the haters they have nothing better to do then sit in their mums house giving people shit for no reason, probably don’t even own bikes 😂.
Anyway rant over, have you tried reaching out to quadlock ? They are unreal no chance of the phone coming off the mount trust me I’ve tried 😂. I’ve tried ultimate adons but they are horrible in my opinion. Keep up the good work mate glad you got your bike sorted 👍.

      😂😂😂
Yeah I got rid of my quadlock because putting it on and off really bugged me haha! I just didn't use the mount. Quadlock is definitely the best mounting solution, but the Mous is soooo easy to use. Maybe too easy though!

I found this & lowside vid after finding your channel recently.
Good you ok & bike sorted.
I had a front end slide on tree shadowed, loose chippings. I recovered but it could have ended badly. I doubt my prior training or bits of paper helped albeit better vision & speed selection might have helped avoid my close call.
Here you come across as humble & level headed....your filtering makes me twitch though 😅
The wise learn from own experiences, the wiser also learn from those of others......Thanks for sharing yours.
    Happy New Year 😊

The summery after you describe your slide is exactly how I feel about this. I doubt an amount of further training or paper could have saved it, but where I was looking may have.
You're right! Learn from it and be thankful that you're able to walk out of it!
      Have a great new year!

You can have all the qualifications in the world, Sam, but if you don't see the hazard, you can't avoid it !let the haters hate,it's what they do,due to the incredibly small penises they have. The crash is the crash, it happens! I know people that have years of experience of adventure riding and drop their bikes with their wives on the back!!! It’s more the hassle of getting things repaired and more importantly getting your pride and confidence back! To be honest I’m more concerned with the fact you’re having your dinner after 8 o’clock! That way too late 😂😂😂

      Hi Sam
I’m glad you took my comment as it was meant. It wasn’t a criticism. I’m a National Observer with the IAM and also ride a 1290. Previously on a blackbird and had so many near misses that I had to improve my riding or sell the bike. Joined the IAM and now get so much more fun out of riding progressively, but safety. If you are looking at off road, do it on a smaller bike. Speaking from experience again.

No prob! Yeah I could tell you weren't being a dick about it! Plus I'd just eaten a slice of cake when I read it, so you could have been and I'd still have not been angry at it 😂
Yeah a lightweight bike off road is soo much better. Taken mine off road quite a lot which is surprisingly capable, but pulling it out of mud needs a small crane haha
