    One of the great things about this scene is what James Horner's music is doing while Spock is saving everybody aboard the Enterprise. We know that the chamber Spock enters is filled with deadly radiation but the music doesn't play the idea of "Spock is in mortal danger": rather, it plays the idea and the attitude that "Spock is the heroic MVP of the moment." The actors (Scotty and McCoy) are the ones telling us that the chamber is dangerous, but the music completely misdirects us into thinking that Spock will both save the day and live, and therefore, it's a real surprise when we find out what happens to Spock. Excellent and thoughtful composing by the late James Horner: he really did so much to help tell this Star Trek story.

    The utter desperation in Scotty’s voice as he begs Spock not to do it…

    • @tkoch7503
      @tkoch7503 2 года назад

      Yeah, but it is silly. Does it not occur to them that he knows what he's doing? Scotty really should be attempting to help him effect repairs instead of basically yelling "No, Spock, come out of there and kill us all." Also, he suddenly shows no sign of injury. It would have been better for him to groggily wake up and assess the situation "Spock, what are you doing? That radiation will kill you." and struggle to his feet and try to help.
      Maybe I am expecting Scotty to be as logical as Spock, but dammit, he's an engineer not a doctor. An engineer should be able to reason - Spock is risking/sacrificing his life to try to repair the warp drive, it must be very important to get the warp drive working.
      Also, there is the cartoonish TV set up. In the TV show Scotty is a one man show who basically repairs FTL nuclear technology all by himself. Really? Does a nuclear sub work that way? Or does the chief engineer have several assistants who are top engineers themselves and whose skills and work are essential as well?
      Kirk sends a hugely important message to Scotty "I need warp speed in three minutes or we are all dead." and Scotty is unconscious and nobody else in engineering gets the message and does anything. Kirk does not even demand some kind of response just sends a message to nobody. Nobody is even working on it. Spock, OTOH, immediately knows what he needs to do to fix it.
      That guy just sitting on the step with a migraine at 0:58 why can't he be an engineer trying to effect repairs who tells Spock - the frim frammel is out but we can't repair it because there's too much radiation in there. Spock can then send him off to work on something while he takes on the radiation.
      This movie, perhaps like many others, is written from a sort of Atlas perspective. The story is only about 8 people, and they pretty much do everything, unless a guy with a red shirt is allowed to die anyway. The eight are the superstars of life, and the rest of the canaille are just anonymous extras.

    I was in college when this hit the theaters and am not ashamed to say that my then boyfriend and I, along with our friends, utterly wept when we realized Spock was going to die. The cries and sobs rang throughout the theater, not just from our group but uniformly through the audience. Personally, I have always admired Spock and wanted to be with someone who was like him. Oddly enough, I did just that. While sometimes it bothers me that my husband appears unemotional and always totally logical, I value his intelligence and his *loyalty* as Spock was always *loyal* to Kirk. Yes, we're nerds and geeks in my family and we're proud of it. LOL
    The moment David says "you can't" when asked how to stop the Genesis wave and Spock makes that internal command decision to sacrifice himself for the good of them all.... It really WAS the logical choice but it cost the senior officers their dearest blood.
    I also always wanted the scene to have Khan see the Enterprise hit warp and survive before he died. Is that wrong of me? LOL I wanted him to see love overcome hate, the love of Spock for Kirk and his crew over the hate Khan had for those he deemed inferior.

    00:18 - 00:23 - That is one of the most unique angles of the Enterprise ever seen. And - since this battle was mostly a "submarines in space" type of battle, I think it's entirely appropriate that we see the Enterprise seemingly struggling towards the "surface". In fact in a way that shot reminds me of the battle in Hunt for Red October when the Dallas played decoy for the torpedo that was about to destroy Red October and did the emergency blow and surface - the Exec Officer tensely saying "C'mon Dallas.... The beauty of Star Trek is that it is not about starships at all, it's not even about space. It simply translates our human-human interactions, our principles, our ideas, into the future. Spock was a dear friend of Kirk's, who saw what needed to be done and his duty, and was comfortable sacrificing himself for the sake of letting all he know live. It could have been written for a sea-faring vessel, or a soap opera in suburban Australia. These same challenges, thoughts and ideas are with us no matter where in the universe we are, or when.

    • @dhunter1133
      @dhunter1133 3 года назад +5

      Interesting. Although it does beggar the question why is it, every time we see a situation in Trek where the crystals need to be realigned, do we also see the Chief Engineer doing this by hand? You'd think a computer with automated servos could align the crystals far more efficiently than a human could eyeball.

    • @CaptainRasmot
      @CaptainRasmot 2 года назад +1

      @@dhunter1133 In most of those cases it's either due to a system malfunction or the fact that the servos in question may have literally been melted off by the absolute shitstorm of Plasma from the Matter to Antimatter reaction. That is what Warp Cores are after all. But another thing is that while it COULD be done by a machine it'd probably take a lot more time due to the fact that in most of those cases many of the core systems were still online. As i said the core is a Matter to Antimatter reactor and that plasma is shunted all over the ship, so that means it'd be powering life-support, most propulsion systems, and a lot of other facets of the ship. It's pretty much the reason why when Khan made his move earlier in the film and hit the main body of the Enterprise, it literally crippled the HELL out of the ship via the Warp Core. So that means either the power to whatever mechanicals that are in the Warp Core to align the crystals was out, or it created a blow-out to the point where they were "jammed" for all intents and purposes.
      Though in some cases i'm pretty sure it comes down to a point to where even a computer system can't really *detect* what is exactly the problem with a crystal when it's not working correctly. Some of this was explained somewhere by Dilithium looking pretty identical to Quartz crystals hence why it took so long for Earth to make a Warp Drive cause it was literally *right under everyone's noses* . It's a bullshit excuse, but eh. As far as i can tell a lot of the times when they do this manually it's either when the entire core is offline in order to inspect the crystals, or even replace them, or when they're in a rush and they don't have the time to let the system correct it. But again, that usually only applies to either the Original Series or a very rare few episodes in the Next Generation, and maybe one or two movies. It's not a thing that's really brought up or done often.

      Khan's life had been a lie from the start. He was created on a false premise, became a monster due to the lies fed to him from his earliest childhood by fascist eugenicists and tried to conquer the world based on the lie that the extermination of non-augmented humanity would somehow be a good thing.
      It was fitting that he would die believing a lie: That he had ultimately won.

    • @jamesdaly83
      @jamesdaly83 3 года назад +8

      I'm so glad they didn't include a karmic revenge scene where Khan sees the Enterprise escape, it would have been tacky no matter how they did it.
      Despite Khan's motivation, revenge was never the point of the film.
      It was about people dealing with the kobayashi maru no-win scenario (the inevitability of growing old and death) and the genesis device/planet (new and existing life flourishing and pushing forward in spite of the inevitability of death).
      The scene showing the forming genesis planet feels like a perfect allegory for where these two concepts collide, and creates a new sense of purpose and way of thinking for the previously depressed and 'old' Kirk... he feels young.
      Having Khan screaming 'nooooooo!' in the middle of all that would have been hammy and would have completely hijacked the point.

      One question I've always had about the scene is: why didn't Enterprise blow Reliant - and the Genesis device - to smithereens? If the Genesis device needed several minutes to build up to critical mass, then destroy it before it has a chance to build up. You might get still get an explosion, but logic dictates it would be far less in order of magnitude.

If we take the explosions of the Enterprise in STIII and the Bird of Prey in STIV as normal for a ship exploding, they were far enough away that Reliant exploding shouldn't have been a threat. I mean, the REAL answer is "because the plot demanded it," but I think it's still an interesting question.

After watching Star Wars 7, I am now convinced that what they should of done is something similar, make it another timeline sure but not the same characters, more like Krik's son and a very similar story. You know the whole going back to go foward is ok but don't destroy the main characters... If by that you mean, Annoy people who knew that original film and confuse people who had no idea why the name Khan was supposed to mean anything, then that result was achieved.
      It's just a very poor cover version. You can't force character chemistry and history that took 3 seasons to build up to enable the above scene have a proper emotional resonance, in just two hours and then having the character's cry to try and force it. That's just hack writing. Then to add insult to injury, they then brought Kirk back in about five minutes and made the entire scene pointless anyway. It single-handedly undid all the hard work the actors had done to make the characters their own interpretations by turning them into backstreet knock offs. That's why I hate it.
