To be fair, there's a lot of missing information in this. I know you make short vids, but maybe some deeper dive vids should compliment. warm season grasses being completely overlooked , almost not mentioning there are 2 types of grass. Edger use is not discussed. Scalping with a string trimmer is easier for most than a mower, and no advice on proper string trimmer technique. No discussion of optimal mow heights being different between grasses. Not really "pro-like" kinda disappointed I felt your vids have been really high quality & succinct but running into one I have a body of knowledge of has me feeling disappointed in the thoroughness. Hope this is recieved as positive criticism.

I'd also suggest you learn which way your string trimmer rotates. If you go the opposite direction, the grass will kick back into the flower bed. If you go the right direction, the grass goes back into the yard.
Very important in yards with any rock features as well, as its pretty easy to kick rocks into things like house or car windows. Especially if you run a string trimmer with no guard, which is a whole nother topic

I swap my mowing direction every time I mow. If I mowed northeast and southwest last week, then I do northwest and south east thus week.i also do 3 laps around the perimeter before I start my diagonal cuts.
Im in Florida and I have realized I need to mow it 1-2x week to help keep the lawn healthy, keep weeds at a minimum and keep it easier to maintain. Trust me I wish I could do it every 2 weeks but I did that for almost 1 year and my lawn had suffered from terrible weeds, uneven growth and more energy needed from me since grass was higher.
Advice is specific to cool season lawns of course. Down south most warm season trophy lawns are reel cut 0.5"-1.25". Not how the professional mow/blow/go crews would do it, its even better, how an obsessed lawn geek would do it. And a lawn geek wants those stripes!

What are you overall thoughts of the Ego mower? I've had mine for 4 years and although I love the connivence of electric, the batteries started having major issues at the end of year 2.
A bunch of my lawn's at 2.5 feet now heading for 3.5, tough pushing through at that height. Have to break out the scythe to get it manageable for the push.
I am someone who had never mowed a lawn because I lived in apartments or condos where it was done for us. However, moving to Canada in a single family home I had to mow the lawn myself and the timing sucked because I had multiple spinal fractures, rib fractures, sternum and broken right arm because of motor-vehicle accident. I came here to see how to mow my lawn properly because the neighbors were calling the city on me because my grass was 8 inches long (which is not allowed by the city). I will argue that the mower can matter. When we moved to our current house i was using a Simplicity conventional riding mower with a 54" deck and 30hp gas engine. It leaves a beautiful cut however it just couldn't keep up and it would take 3hrs to cut 2.5 acres because I'd have to drive so slow to avoid clogging the deck. This was with mowing once a week. I then got a Ferris isx800 zero turn with a 52" deck and a 27hp gas engine. So obviously a zero turn is more maneuverable. However what blew me away is that despite being slightly less horsepower the ferris will plow through taller grass like nobody's business while running the same blades that i had on the Simplicity. It rips through a tall and/or damp yard and barely slows the engine down and rarely discharges big clumps. Whereas the simplicity would stall out regularly and leave large elephant turds everywhere. This difference in cutting ability got my mowing time down to 1.5 hrs if i'm going for a nice cut and i can get it down in right about an hr if I'm just flying through but with not as clean of a result. Now i will say the simplicity will leave a nicer finish because of how the deck is allowed to free float much more than the ferris. So the deck contours to any dips or uneven terrain without scalping ridges or leaving dips extra tall. Also the ferris which is much heavier comes with very rounded tread tires which quickly leave shallow ruts versus the simplicity has extra wide flat thread tires that never compress the ground.
50% of his advice is worth consideration. The other 50 can typically be taken with a grain of salt. Cut quality does in fact vary from mower to mower and cutting height does matter notwithstanding his advice to the contrary.

I use an EDGE TRIMMER, for edging. A STRING TRIMMER, for touching up around walls, etc. One week I mow in one direction, and next week the next one. When I'm done, I go around and remove whatever pesky weed is trying to come out. 4 summers in professional grounds keeping crews taught me well for life.
I use that "$99 lawnmower" shown around 2 minutes in quite often as an extra tool we keep for doing the local cemetery. It cuts surprisingly well but the deck is total garbage
My mom taught me to always cut the grass in straight lines going back and forth that way you don't just cut the grass you get whatever you might've missed. 🚜
Question in regards to the actual process of mowing a lawn, anyone can just push a mower around a lawn any which way, but when mowing back an forth across the lawn, is there a specific amount of overlap needed from one pass to the next? I ask due to the fact that the sharpened end of mower blades does not actually go the full length of the mower blade itself.
I was told by my lawn service to mow our lawn at the highest blade setting or 6 inches.. It stops sunlight from getting to the ground and therefore weed growth and it gives the grass a chance to survive the hot dry summer days.

I have a zero turn with a 60-in deck. The deck floats so I just hang it over the edge a bit to cut the grass at the edge of the beds. 🤷🏼♂️ My entire yard is configured so I can use the zero turn. Every tree and every edge has gravel or mulch. Sold my push mower years ago. Once I finish landscaping a couple more spots, the trimmer is next. I do still clean up the edges once or twice a season with an edging shovel. K I.S.S.
Cut at 3 inches for Bluegrass .Lawn will be a darker green and healthier root system will result also aerate atleast once in spring and after Labor Day

Unless you got a crazy deal, that M18 mower price of $800 is "tool only." The 12mAh batteries are still $500 for the set and you'd still need the charger ... the complete kit remains the way to go.

How do you smooth out your lawn? I have a fairly large plot similar to yours and I like push-mowing for the exercise, but the lawn is uneven and bumpy so the mower jumps some spots. I was looking into using a lawn roller but not sure.
for large tracts, they make lawn leveling machines (basically a big hopper of sand with 2 rotating discs - alot like salt throwers on the backs of trucks if you are familiar from up north). Perhaps you could replicate that with a walk-behind fertilizer applicator. Lawn rollers seem like too much of a hassle

I grew up mowing a really large yard and orchard every Saturday. I also cut grass for a massive campground and a ski resort. I have an important piece of advice: Never take mezcal before cutting the grass. It takes forever because it becomes really difficult to figure out where you have cut the grass already and where you haven't. Another problem is if you go in to take a piss, don't look in the mirror, you may be there for a while. It is also a little embarrassing when you realize that people are watching you crawl around on your belly trying to figure out if the grass has already been cut. ,,,,,,,,,,, Well, as long as you are paid by the hour, it's all good.
I view mowing the lawn as equivalent of a root canal without Novacaine. My attitude is get on the mower, mow it as fast as you can, and get back in the house. If I have a few scalps, I don’t give two hoots or a holler, and if the mower blade is a little nicked I don’t care. I get the mower serviced once every year or two and that’s enough. And I certainly am not in a pretty lawn contest with my neighbor - if he doesn’t like the looks of my lawn, he can come over and do it. A lawn to me just a bunch of green stuff - a necessary evil that gives my wife something to complain to me about and an source of irritation that requires me to slavishly maintain it, when I’d rather be doing something else.

I was reacting to these mow the lawn types who have to have perfect edges, no dandelions and grass at the perfect height with a consistent perfect green hue. You know the types who mainline “weed and feed”. I certainly like my house, it has a lot of curb appeal, but a perfect grass yard has never the top on my list and the lawn is not a perfect culture of blue grass or fescue. I come from a long line of family men for whom yard work possesses no appeal. I never saw my grandfather with a lawn mower, and my father detested yard work. Your Weed-Wacker has a direction of rotation, either clockwise or counter clockwise. It will throw the trimmings either right of left. Remember that and then trim so that it always throws the trimmings back onto the grass instead of the beds.
In the 21" size like this one, definitely. 10 years ago electric mowers were almost a joke along with battery trimmers. These ones are night and day and this paticular Milwaukee is really amazing.
owners prefferance really. Want it to look good, & take more time, bag. Want to knock it down most efficently side discharge. Want to try to keep the vitamans/nutrients of the lawn clippings, & utilize them as best one can, mulch.

Dig em out from the root They grow back because you're only cutting the tops, the base is still in the ground. And of course sometimes it's the seeds that cause them to continuously grow back

Not-good lower-left thumbnail item that says, “Mow like a Pro.” In my experience, never do that. “Professionals” (i.e., those you pay to do it for you) generally are focused mainly on going through motions to get the job done fast and get out as quickly as possible. (To them it’s only about making as much money as quickly as possible, not about caring for your lawn.) Most tear over your modest yard with a huge industrial, sit-on or stand-on beast of a mower that cuts too short, leaves tire tracks and skid marks. Then they do a quick, pitiful hack-job of trimming where they rip the grass on an angle down to the dirt along your house and other objects, and so-called edging where they continue to hold their string trimmer horizontally and do the same angled scalping of the grass in strips alongside the pavement or bed. (It’s as though they’re not there to take care of your lawn, they’re there to kill it.) If you care about how your lawn looks, mow, trim, and edge it yourself using the good advice of this video as long as you can. When you no longer can do it yourself and need to hire a “Professional” service to do it, good luck.
A friend of mine recalled his younger days, mowing lawns for a living. The owner of the company was intentionally scalping lawn below 1 inch during dry spells so it would not grow back for a month (less work).

Had the same issue out here in Colorado Until I discovered 20-20-10 . Since then My lawn is lush and long with one watering at nigh 4 days a week. Good luck 20 Nitrogen (N) Necessary for growth and color 20 Phosphate (P) Necessary for root growth 10 Potash (K) Necessary for plant health
Find out what kind of grass you have > learn what its ideal conditions are > start creating those conditions. Can't? resod or re-seed depending on your grass type & situation.

I run a 22-0-4 on my st augustine grass during the summer, and a 6-4-0 or 6-6-6 for my ornatmental plants, and to add a little phosporus to the 22-0-4. I have to mow twice a week or I would start scalping my grass once we get to peak heat. But every turf is different.
The one third rule is more important than you think. But it's about what you do consistently. If you do follow the one third rule, then go away for vacation or whatever, you can safely cut and violate that rule. Because you follow it the majority of the time, you won't do damage if you violate it here or there. If you did it consistently, you'd be holding back your lawn.
With a my mowers i don't care if it scalp the lawn or hit rocks or roots unless its a the golf course i work at all mine still have the original blade and still cut fine no matter what you do the Australian landscape will flog your mower.
I just stumbled on this video and was eager to watch it, but there seems to be a problem with it. It starts but quickly acts up with stops and go and invariably freeze. And yes, every other videos plays just fine.
I'm not much interested in knowing how to mow like a professional. As long as it gets cut once a week, that's good enough for me. I'm happy enough just maintaining my equipment to get the longest life possible out of it. For me, there is no wrong way to mow. My yard has tree roots higher than a lot of the grass, mole hills and tunnel lines, low spots and high spots, but it wasn't too many years ago it was pasture with cows and chickens grazing and scratching in it, lol.
Depends on the number of hours in service.....and the engine....size, pistons... On a typical Briggs push mower 21" deck... mowing 3/4 acre I change the oil twice a season. Plug yearly, air filter yearly....use Ethanol free gas only.... I get at least 15 yrs out of the engines with this duty cycle... they are pretty simple engines and could be rebuilt, but it isn't worth the time as the other components fail by this time frame....
I would say REEL mowers are better than the mowers you are showing. You can get them in manual, electric and gasoline. Most people do not sharpen their blades as much as you need to and what ends up happening is the spin type mowers do not cut the blade of grass correctly. It will end up tearing at the blades which is not good for the grass. Reel mowers pinch the blades and stop the tearing, which gives the lawn a better look and doesn't injure the blade of grass.
I would also say that 99.999% of people don't have a lawn smooth enough to use a reel mower, and the amount of effort and money to make it, and keep it, that smooth is also something most people cannot do. Great for small lawns or gold course greens, no so great for a .5 acre or larger lawn without a lot of effort
My landlord needs to watch this video. He mows every 3 weeks to a month and hates mowing, but he wont let me or any of the neighbors do. He drags the mower across everything and cuts down to the dirt. Then doesnt pick up any of the clippings that goes on neighbors driveway. Hes a menace to his lawn.
@@SilverCymbal My 201- Craftsman mower has height adjustments for each wheel. I raise the mower on one side to accommodate the depth of the bed. This avoids scalping. I still have to do the vertical cut of the edge with a trimmer.
Im not being a jerk but I live in the deep country and I have an 80 x 80 chainlink yard and its away from everything pretty much and I use gas and a lighter to weedeat. FOOF it gone in a couple minutes.Im extremely allergic to poison ivy and I have used roundup and I have used tractor tire solution and it just comes back. About once a month I just do this.
A trick for mowing the edges. Increase the height of one side of the deck by dropping the wheels. Place the heightened side inside the bed. Adjust so the deck is level across the span of the deck.
I have never seen a mower you can adjust one side higher or lower than the other. Older models have separate front and back adjustment, and newer ones have 1 lever for all wheels at once.

I've also come to accept that "you do need to edge your beds."
Or you just have a decorative rock/stone/concrete trim around your garden/flower bed...

I always alternate- E/W, N/S diagonal left, diagonal right. Learned this from George Toma- heads groundskeeper at Kauffman Stadium.
I do that with my Zoysia grass, but it makes no difference. I get wheel marks all the time.
I change directions every cut. I have a nice roller on the back end of the mower and the mowed lines look great after each cut.

During hotter dryer months in summer I raise my blade height. Less stress on the grass and more dew capture on longer grass blades.

Changing direction is also just more interesting to do. I rotate each time horizontally and iagonally. Four different directions.

I overlap a little by putting my wheel on top of the edge of the last pass, similar to vacuuming indoors I suppose
My Honda lawnmower has a rear roller that allows me to go over the edge a little bit… but I still edge it with a strimmer.

the layer you will have down there will be making it hard for the soil to breath and access water and fertlisers eventually, ul have kids getting bogged on there eyelids scooters n all there will be that much thatch lol Australia the summers are 40 degrees and we mow all our lawns low providing you are giving them the rite amount of water and fertilisers and amendments they love it.
what sort of lawn do you have?
I have a zero turn with a 60-in deck. The deck floats so I just hang it over the edge a bit to cut the grass at the edge of the beds. 🤷🏼♂️
My entire yard is configured so I can use the zero turn. Every tree and every edge has gravel or mulch. Sold my push mower years ago. Once I finish landscaping a couple more spots, the trimmer is next. I do still clean up the edges once or twice a season with an edging shovel. K I.S.S.

How do you smooth out your lawn? I have a fairly large plot similar to yours and I like push-mowing for the exercise, but the lawn is uneven and bumpy so the mower jumps some spots. I was looking into using a lawn roller but not sure.
for large tracts, they make lawn leveling machines (basically a big hopper of sand with 2 rotating discs - alot like salt throwers on the backs of trucks if you are familiar from up north). Perhaps you could replicate that with a walk-behind fertilizer applicator. Lawn rollers seem like too much of a hassle

I grew up mowing a really large yard and orchard every Saturday. I also cut grass for a massive campground and a ski resort. I have an important piece of advice: Never take mezcal before cutting the grass. It takes forever because it becomes really difficult to figure out where you have cut the grass already and where you haven't. Another problem is if you go in to take a piss, don't look in the mirror, you may be there for a while. It is also a little embarrassing when you realize that people are watching you crawl around on your belly trying to figure out if the grass has already been cut. ,,,,,,,,,,, Well, as long as you are paid by the hour, it's all good.

I view mowing the lawn as equivalent of a root canal without Novacaine. My attitude is get on the mower, mow it as fast as you can, and get back in the house. If I have a few scalps, I don’t give two hoots or a holler, and if the mower blade is a little nicked I don’t care. I get the mower serviced once every year or two and that’s enough. And I certainly am not in a pretty lawn contest with my neighbor - if he doesn’t like the looks of my lawn, he can come over and do it. A lawn to me just a bunch of green stuff - a necessary evil that gives my wife something to complain to me about and an source of irritation that requires me to slavishly maintain it, when I’d rather be doing something else.

I was reacting to these mow the lawn types who have to have perfect edges, no dandelions and grass at the perfect height with a consistent perfect green hue. You know the types who mainline “weed and feed”. I certainly like my house, it has a lot of curb appeal, but a perfect grass yard has never the top on my list and the lawn is not a perfect culture of blue grass or fescue. I come from a long line of family men for whom yard work possesses no appeal. I never saw my grandfather with a lawn mower, and my father detested yard work. That gene apparently is a dominate one in my family. It is odd however, that while abhoring the act, I do my best thinking while riding the Husqvarna. That mindless activity and the vibrations of the big Briggs thumper purges my brain and I can think deeply about problems at work or other family, financial, or community issues. It is like bass and pike fishing to me, I relax and the repetitive casting and retreating places me into some sort of quiet place where the thinking lobes can begin to work.

When trimming and edging around your beds, how do you keep the clippings out of the beds/mulch.
Your Weed-Wacker has a direction of rotation, either clockwise or counter clockwise. It will throw the trimmings either right of left. Remember that and then trim so that it always throws the trimmings back onto the grass instead of the beds.

In the 21" size like this one, definitely. 10 years ago electric mowers were almost a joke along with battery trimmers. These ones are night and day and this paticular Milwaukee is really amazing.

mulching is the best because of the consistent return of nutrients in the soil that is organic & natural. It feeds the bugs unlike mined ferts.

They grow back because you're only cutting the tops, the base is still in the ground. And of course sometimes it's the seeds that cause them to continuously grow back

Not-good lower-left thumbnail item that says, “Mow like a Pro.” In my experience, never do that. “Professionals” (i.e., those you pay to do it for you) generally are focused mainly on going through motions to get the job done fast and get out as quickly as possible. (To them it’s only about making as much money as quickly as possible, not about caring for your lawn.) Most tear over your modest yard with a huge industrial, sit-on or stand-on beast of a mower that cuts too short, leaves tire tracks and skid marks. Then they do a quick, pitiful hack-job of trimming where they rip the grass on an angle down to the dirt along your house and other objects, and so-called edging where they continue to hold their string trimmer horizontally and do the same angled scalping of the grass in strips alongside the pavement or bed. (It’s as though they’re not there to take care of your lawn, they’re there to kill it.) If you care about how your lawn looks, mow, trim, and edge it yourself using the good advice of this video as long as you can. When you no longer can do it yourself and need to hire a “Professional” service to do it, good luck.
A friend of mine recalled his younger days, mowing lawns for a living. The owner of the company was intentionally scalping lawn below 1 inch during dry spells so it would not grow back for a month (less work).

I run a 22-0-4 on my st augustine grass during the summer, and a 6-4-0 or 6-6-6 for my ornatmental plants, and to add a little phosporus to the 22-0-4. I have to mow twice a week or I would start scalping my grass once we get to peak heat. But every turf is different.

Whoa! Does that mower actually have enough charge to cut your large lawn?
The one third rule is more important than you think. But it's about what you do consistently. If you do follow the one third rule, then go away for vacation or whatever, you can safely cut and violate that rule. Because you follow it the majority of the time, you won't do damage if you violate it here or there. If you did it consistently, you'd be holding back your lawn.

Height matters for weed control.
On electric one it is easy because there is no fuel just flip it over.... No. Seriosly firstly make sure that it is OFF. :P
on my gasoline one I just flip it over, but make sure there is less than 1/2 tank of gas.
@@MarkTrades__ I never had to worry about that with my gas mowers, as long as I flipped it so the carburetor was facing up.
With a my mowers i don't care if it scalp the lawn or hit rocks or roots unless its a the golf course i work at all mine still have the original blade and still cut fine no matter what you do the Australian landscape will flog your mower.

I just stumbled on this video and was eager to watch it, but there seems to be a problem with it.
It starts but quickly acts up with stops and go and invariably freeze. And yes, every other videos plays just fine.
I'm not much interested in knowing how to mow like a professional. As long as it gets cut once a week, that's good enough for me. I'm happy enough just maintaining my equipment to get the longest life possible out of it. For me, there is no wrong way to mow. My yard has tree roots higher than a lot of the grass, mole hills and tunnel lines, low spots and high spots, but it wasn't too many years ago it was pasture with cows and chickens grazing and scratching in it, lol.
while not directly 'how to mow' - How about how often to replace the oil in the lawnmower?
Depends on the number of hours in service.....and the engine....size, pistons...
On a typical Briggs push mower 21" deck... mowing 3/4 acre I change the oil twice a season. Plug yearly, air filter yearly....use Ethanol free gas only.... I get at least 15 yrs out of the engines with this duty cycle... they are pretty simple engines and could be rebuilt, but it isn't worth the time as the other components fail by this time frame....
Small engines usually have a 50 hour oil change interval but check your manual.
I would say REEL mowers are better than the mowers you are showing. You can get them in manual, electric and gasoline. Most people do not sharpen their blades as much as you need to and what ends up happening is the spin type mowers do not cut the blade of grass correctly. It will end up tearing at the blades which is not good for the grass. Reel mowers pinch the blades and stop the tearing, which gives the lawn a better look and doesn't injure the blade of grass.
I would also say that 99.999% of people don't have a lawn smooth enough to use a reel mower, and the amount of effort and money to make it, and keep it, that smooth is also something most people cannot do. Great for small lawns or gold course greens, no so great for a .5 acre or larger lawn without a lot of effort

My landlord needs to watch this video. He mows every 3 weeks to a month and hates mowing, but he wont let me or any of the neighbors do. He drags the mower across everything and cuts down to the dirt. Then doesnt pick up any of the clippings that goes on neighbors driveway. Hes a menace to his lawn.

They used to sell walk behind mowers with an offset to eliminate this completely but they just went away. Someone should bring them back.
@@SilverCymbal My 201- Craftsman mower has height adjustments for each wheel. I raise the mower on one side to accommodate the depth of the bed. This avoids scalping. I still have to do the vertical cut of the edge with a trimmer.
Mate cut it really low so it does not grow it fast and summer in Australia the lawn grows the fastest.

Im not being a jerk but I live in the deep country and I have an 80 x 80 chainlink yard and its away from everything pretty much and I use gas and a lighter to weedeat. FOOF it gone in a couple minutes.Im extremely allergic to poison ivy and I have used roundup and I have used tractor tire solution and it just comes back. About once a month I just do this.

A trick for mowing the edges. Increase the height of one side of the deck by dropping the wheels. Place the heightened side inside the bed. Adjust so the deck is level across the span of the deck.
My new mower can't do that. All the wheels adjust with one lever.
I have never seen a mower you can adjust one side higher or lower than the other.
Older models have separate front and back adjustment, and newer ones have 1 lever for all wheels at once.
