The Airbus A350 vs A330neo - Which Plane Is Best?

  • The Airbus A330 has always been a solid workhorse of an aircraft. Neither as popular as the Airbus A320 series, nor as big and flashy the Airbus A350, this humble widebody finds itself right in the middle of the Airbus family lineup. The same can be said for the latest version, the A330neo. But should this aircraft type consider itself sub-par when compared to the A350? Or is it secretly a superior aircraft that will soon find its feet in the marketplace? Well, let’s see how the two compare in today’s video!

    While the 350 is always going to outsell the 330neo because of its better fuel burn, you have missed one important advantage of the 330 for some airlines. If they are an Airbus only shop for their narrowbodies (as many non-US airlines are) the 330neo has a common type rating with the A320 family. This gives a large gain in staffing flexibility and a large reduction in training costs, plus enough commonality to also reduce maintenance costs.

    I didn't know they were both that close in size. Makes you question why Airbus didn't bother with the A350-800 and open the door to all A350 fleets. With the A321XLR coming soon and being able to have up to 240 passengers in a narrowbody the A330 market is being eaten into by both ends. That's before you factor in how being beat them to the punch with the 787.

      A321 XLR just reach 4700nm while the A330NEO 7200nm. The price difference between A330NEO with A350 still huge. It is good to still offer A330.

    • @christodang
      @christodang Год назад +1

      Probably type ratings. Airlines already operating the older A330s are incentivized to move over to the A330-900 since it would require minimal additional training for pilots and cabin crew vs switching over to the A350

    •  7 месяцев назад

      A not-so-obvious aspect is financing conditions. At very simplified terms A330 series is kept in the lineup as an option with a cheaper initial price and higher operation (fuel) cost for airlines with not as good credit rating (=higher interest) or generally limited access to financing. If less interest eats up your cash flow you have more left for fuel and are less vulnerable to business hickups. Look at the selection of 330neo buyer airlines here in the video - none of them are big players from the top economies. I would not be surprised if the 330neo is sold at much higher hidden discounts than the 350 because the development program of the base plane is long written off and only the neo program's cost goes into the price, so airbus has more headroom for discounts will retaining some contribution margin.

      The A330-800 still has a market with airlines that mainly run 320s but need some widebodies for their thickest routes. The common pilot type rating and the commonality of many parts between the 320s and 330s makes this the ideal choice for such airlines. But it is a niche market.

      Fuel burn, sure. But if you are already running a fleet of 320s the additional maintenance and training costs of the 330 will be far less than for any other widebody because of parts commonality and the common pilot type rating. So the 330 still has a market - just not as large as the 350's.

    Does the 330neo have near-similar noise levels & cabin pressures as the 350? I've only been on (admittedly elderly) A330-200 & -300, and the A350 was a generational difference in terms of comfort. I've specifically chosen airfares due to the aircraft before, and a 350 would get my ticket over a 330 according to my (admittedly limited) experience. That sort of passenger sentiment would have to come into the airline's purchase-decision algorithm.

    It is funny how the term "to climb over somebody" to get to the aisle has stuck. With today's economy class seating, it is virtually impossible for an adult to "climb over" another adult without either causing injuries to one or both of the people involved or coming way too close to the person. 🤣
    I will soon be able to have the direct comparison, as out of the two transatlantic flights soon to come, one will be on a 330 neo while the other one will be on a 350. The A330 is inherently more aerodynamic than either 787 or A350 due to narrower fuselage width, which brings it right back into the equation, despite its legacy status. A330 also has similar, modern powerplants & similar aerodynamic wingtips which now make it a genuine long range performer, something the A330ceo fell slightly short of. A330neo has to be a force to be reckoned with in this sector. CEO of Air Asia once described the A330 as 'Pound for pound, the best airliner on the market!' As for A350. Traveled on Cathay Pacific.
