  • In this CNC tutorial, I will explain how to find the exact center of round projects on CNC Routers (or any CNC machine). This guide is essential for woodworkers, focusing on the precision setup of CNC projects.
    I will also explain the crucial role of having grids cut into your spoil board. These grids are not merely lines but essential tools for precise alignment of CNC router projects, ensuring they are square and accurately placed.
    What Will You Learn
    1. Grid Utilization: Learn how these reference lines can provide a dependable method to align and center your CNC router project woodworking.
    2. Manual Date Interface (MDI): The tutorial includes a walkthrough of the Manual Data Input (MDI) or console interface. This is how you manually input gcode commands for direct control over the CNC machine.
    3. G-Code Commands: I'll demonstrate how to use the MDI function, found in most CNC router control software, to enter the correct G-code commands for precise positioning.
    Reference g-code to find the center from the theoretical lower left corner of a round piece of material.
    For inches → g0g20x6.0y6.0 (for x and y, enter the radius of your material)
    For metric (in mm) → g0g21x150.0y150.0 (for x and y, enter the radius of your material)
    The video features a practical demonstration, showing how to move the CNC machine from a theoretical lower-left corner to the exact center of a 12-inch round piece of wood. This practical approach is aimed at providing hands-on experience with the CNC Router.
    Woodworking precision is about more than just skill; it's about using the right tools and techniques effectively.

    You can also use the center head of a combination square set to mark the center. Then place workpiece against L fence on the spoil board.

    That works-but sure takes a while with lots of steps. I spent 18 bux for center finder line gauge and use it regularly. Super fast/easy. Mark center then set your x, y center of project on your mark.
    Thanks for the video. When will you get Makita Muscle Chucks back in stock?

    Loved the mdi information, I am going to see if I can use this to restart my spindle after an emergency stop!
    It may be video parallax but the right side did not look like it lined up with your grid so either your measurement or your grid is off?

    What I do with gsender, is after I get my xy zero like you did. I go into the settings in the top right corner and select whether I’m using mm or inches. Then I go back out of the settings and click on the numbers by the x zero button a type -6.00, do the same by the y zero button -6.00. Then when I hit the go to buttons it will move over and up 6 inches putting it in the middle of the circle.

    So, i see a flaw of sorts and maybe i am over thinking it but it seems either you stock is not that 12x12 or the grid lines are off. Seems something is out from the video you can see that the stock over shoots to the right and up top too, from your grid lines, am i wrong but the stock looks bigger then the grid lines for 12x12

      Saw that too. Hard to tell from the angle of the camera, but I don’t think the piece was right on the left grid line.

    To find the exact centre of a circle you need to draw to chords and then draw a straight line from the centre of each chord and right angle to the chord. Where the two straight lines meet is the centre of the circle

    • @IDCWoodcraft
      @IDCWoodcraft  6 месяцев назад

      MehdiShatti, you can absolutely do it that way too brother. It's really preference of what ever way works best for you! As they say, there's a thousand ways to skin a cat!

  • @jscotcha
    @jscotcha 6 месяцев назад +3

    You mentioned that your grid lines were 2 inches apart, yet when you positioned your 12 inch circles left edge on a grid line the right edge was past the grid line that was 12 inches from the left grid line. That would make your center incorrect.

    • @rickgauthier6597
      @rickgauthier6597 6 месяцев назад +1

      Lol yeah i saw that too, and just questioned it too, if you look close its over at the top too, so seems either the stock is bigger then 12x12 or the grid lines are not quite 2x2 lol

    Why not just use your tape measure ?
    You can always set spindle to your mark in center with your v bit and if in doubt then manually move in X@Y half the size . Measuring tapes I’ve been around forever and work well as long as you use the same one for the whole project.
    With that said love the videos when they are not a commercial all the time. Love and use your bits an love them too.
    Stay safe!

      @@IDCWoodcraft What kind of homing switches do you have on the cnc? Because mechanical ones have produced really flaky homing in my experience with cheap cncs, to the point it was better to rezero in a bed hole each time, if the hole grid was to be used for anything requiring basic precision.
