I don't care what anyone says, this cartoon (the entire series) really taught kids about real life. Every day in the 70's(born 1973) this and the Brady Bunch were invaluable. I had a sign in my office that said and I would do Fred's voice to my boss "Union rule Ya'know"
Alright, I knew Flintstones wasn't always a "kid's show", I knew different things were acceptable in different times, I could wrap my head around the Flintstones advertising beer, but Barney just saying he's going to kill himself before laughing over it with Fred genuinely blindsided me holy shit
Well, Barney working at the quarry with Fred was something that became common after the original TV show ended (I think this was made just after that, too), but in the actual original TV show itself, he was never shown working with Fred, and was always shown going to a different job than Fred but never was it revealed what that job was.
The 1967 commercial was a year after the final Flintstones story that had the original voice cast, and production team. That story was the feature length movie, ‘The Man Called Flintstone’, in 1966. It’s interesting to find this very long commercial which also featured the original voice cast and production.
@7:33 Fred Flintstone is doing an imitation of a Jackie Gleason TV routine of "Joe the Bartender" with an off-camera character named "Mr. Dennehy." I was a kid back when "The Flintstones" aired on ABC-TV; and back then it was rumored about the cartoon being a copy of Jackie Gleason's "The Honeymooners" syndicated TV show of that era. I saw nothing in print to confirm or deny that, as all there was with the media was print, TV, and radio.
This was specifically created for a late 1966 Busch sales meeting (previewing Busch's 1967 ad campaign), and never seen by the general public. Jean VanderPyl was unavailable to record the soundtrack, so Gerry Johnson doubled as Wilma's AND Betty's voices. Gerald Mohr is the narrator.
Fred and Barney really had a drinking problem. I have seen the Flintstones Winston cigarette commercial... but this one got past me somehow! WORTH the watch! If you young, you would not know that this show was not designed for kids.
There are actually two episodes where Barney's job was noted. I believe he was a janitor (Fred tells Barney to put his broom down and demand more pay). This was S01 E04 · No Help Wanted (1960) where Fred confronts Barney's boss to negotiate for a raise, but instead, gets him fired, leading Barney to work for a appliance and furniture store as a repo man, and S03 E02 Fred's New Boss (1962) wherin Barney gets fired and Fred tries to get him a job in the gravel pit. It turned out that Mr. Slate was Barney's uncle, who then hired him and made him Fred's boss.
Later on the pebbles and bam and any of the specials Barney worked for slate. In fact this sales pitch cartoon looks like the first bit of updated Flintstones animation we would see during the 1970's. More color, detail etc...
There was an episode where Barney found out that he was Mr Slate's nephew. So, Slate hired Barney and made him "Vice President -in charge of production", which also made him Fred's boss at the quarry. 👍
Fred and Barney never actually drank beer in the series. The closest to alcohol was Cactus Juice in that ep with Pebbles' birthday party, and Lava Juice in the 1994 movie
In some of the very early episodes (first 3 seasons) there are episodes where they do drink - beer, cocktails, champagne were often featured and referenced in several episodes. Also in the movie, there is a scene with a waitress coming in with a giant tankard of beer after a bowling game and when Fred comes back home his mother-in-law says "look at you, drunk as a skunkasauras". So, alcohol is referenced plenty of times in the Flintstones.
Wow, there's more wrong with this cartoon than just Fred and Barney drinking beer. I mean Barney talks about killing himself in one part. I suppose this was a time when the Flinstones was meant for adults and not children.
Fred even makes a stone age reference to Gleason when he rushes to the garbage, and asks the driver, "Am I too late for the garbage", to which the driver replies, "No honey. Hop in!" Fred responds with "Everybody wants to be a regular Jackie Gleastone!"
Really? Didn't know that. Ladies do men act like that you think? And do women read minds or have eyes in the back of their heads? Or do they just bluff men? Lol...feed back plz
If Fred and Barney weren't hung over on the job, maybe those industrial accidents wouldn't happen. Mr. Slate could smell the Busch oozing from their pores.
Remember kids after a night of Club hopping and merry making , if you end up getting pulled over or approached by the Poe-Poe never admit to the consumption of alcohol and refuse all tests , evoke your right to remain silent . Do not attempt to call or talk to anybody until the following morning when you no longer display any signs of intoxication because once in custody you will be recorded and everything you say or do will be used against you in a court of law at a later date !
An approximative spanish translation of Fred's and Barney's names would be, perhaps, "Federico Piedra-Pedernal" (or, simpler, "Pedernal") and "Bernardo Cascotes" (or "Bernardo Ripio"). Fred's and Barney's spanish names adopted for spanish dubbing are "Pedro Picapiedra" and "Pablo Mármol". In English re-translation they would be "Peter Quarrier" and "Paul Marble". I believe these names are very proper, because Peter means "Rock", and Paul means "Small" or "Humble". In the other hand, for a spanish-speaker, is interesting to learn that "Flintstone" means "Pedernal", an allusion (I guess) to Fred's irascible character. Greetings from Lima, Peru.
It was Gerry Johnson who did both Wilma and Betty . To me she did a better job at Wilma though she was the replacement for Betty in the last 2 seasons of the show.

Well, Barney working at the quarry with Fred was something that became common after the original TV show ended (I think this was made just after that, too), but in the actual original TV show itself, he was never shown working with Fred, and was always shown going to a different job than Fred but never was it revealed what that job was.
There was that episode when Mr. Slate thought Barney was a distant relative and made him an executive and had to boss Fred which really annoyed Fred!

They probably made multiple commercials out of this by splicing it up into smaller clips!
