I just had an argument on a forum about getting gas at a station when the tanker is filling up the tanks. I had always learned NEVER to fill up, as the force of the incoming gas is pulling u all the sediment in the bottom of the tank. Some guy told me I was completely wrong, that ‘modern’ gas stations have filters, blah blah blah, and that this can’t happen. I’m SO glad to hear you talk about that sediment.
I have seen with my own eyes, debris spewing from the hose. I stopped, went inside, and asked if the tanker was here today. Of course, he had just left. I showed the guy at the counter the fuel in the tank, and showed him my other completely clean fuel cans. He didn't charge me for the 1/2 liter or so of fuel I pumped. I went to another station. Debris like that is not much of a problem for your automobile, as the fuel pump typically draws from the top. Small engines with gravity fed systems just can't overcome Mean ol' Mr Gravity. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

My inclination would be to pull the carb and run it through the ultrasonic in addition to replacing that 150 micron fuel screen (it’s hardly a filter) with a 40 micron clear paper filter since there’s enough room. Just a little added insurance…
I actually eliminated the fuel filter, it didn't come from the factory that way. Someone else had added it with the wrong sized fuel lines. The mesh screen in the tank was doing it's job just fine. I tried several filters, but they all resulted in a small stream of a fuel leak.
@@TheLawnmowerLady In that case I would have replace the fuel line completely. I like to send machines back to owners with a shutoff and filter even if they arrived without one. When ethanol first came out the pumps had to have filter because the ethanol was cleaning crud from the tanks. Many car fuel filters plugged either fron the station crud or crud cleaned from the car tank.
Every spring I get a few mowers in with contaminated fuel in them. Many people swear they just put fresh fuel in. Mabe so, but their gas tank was contaminated before they added fresh fuel. I usually clean out the fuel tank and carburetor then use my own recreational fuel to the mower. As expected, the mower runs 100% better. I tell them to dispose of the contaminated fuel and mabe consider a new fuel can as well. If I see the fuel can has no cap, its a given as to what is wrong.
I get a rush of bad, or debris contaminated fuel often in June/July. My theory is this is the first time they've filled up that debris and water filled jerry can left over from last year, since they've been mowing so far on the residual stabilized fuel from over winter. Makes sense to me? Thanks for watching.
@TheLawnmowerLady Ever have someone use a fuel can with no top, and caterpillars had crawled into it? I had that happen once on a riding mower. The fuel tank had carcasses plugging it up. She didn't want to dispose of the fuel can, till I showed her that it was loaded with them.
I personally don't, as I only use ethanol free fuel for all my small engines, and that's what I use in other folks equipment. I think something like Stabil is useful for some folks who store their gear long-term. I'm going through fuel for small engines nearly year round.
I charge a min 1/2 hour for anything. That covers a basic assessment, and the small amount of time to change out the consumables that comes with a "tune-up" Anything else, carb service, blade sharpening, etc., is extra, by the hour. I spent far more time editing the video, LOL. Thanks for watching!
I have a very similar model Honda. As you mention, the fuel tap can be the problem. If you leave the fuel tap closed by mistake, the mower can nevertheless run for a surprisingly long time. That would certainly be compatible with a mower that will run for 10 mins stall then be unable to restart. Not saying that is the problem in this particular instance but it can happen and should be the first thing you check if that happens to you. Just wondering why you think the problem might have been the ignition coil? I figured with a bad ignition coil you wouldn’t have been able to start the mower at all but I am not an expert like you are.
Just based on her description: stopped mowing, and she couldn't get it started til the next day. Signs of an ignition coil failing often happens on a hot start attempt. After I returned the mower to her, and asking a few more questions, I'm leaning towards fuel tap off. I did find out there were some other issues, but most were red herrings. The mower was long gone by then, and didn't make it into the video.
@@TheLawnmowerLady thx for your prompt reply. I have another machine with a Honda engine that starts cold, runs, stalls, then has to cool off before restarting. From what you say, might be the coil. I guess next time it stalls I should check for spark. If there spark when cold and no spark when hot, I guess the coil would be a likely culprit. Thank you so much for your time
@@bl9531 Absolutely, but before you go dropping some coin on a coil, pop off the fuel cap. If you hear a whooshing sound, and it fires back up, you may have a fuel cap that has failed to vent properly. Just replace the cap for a new one.Much cheaper than a new coil.
That was basically it, with a few more red herrings. I learnt a lot when I dropped off the mower, but too late for the video. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Love your content, I have what might be a odd question? When I engage my deck on my rider it makes a loud squealing noice for a sec and stops. It doesn't effect the way the deck works, and only dies it once when engaging the deck. I've replaced both spindles and pulleys new deck belt and drive belt. Still does it. The tractor is a 1990 Noma/Dynamark 39inch deck. I've completely restored it. Please help. It's a fantastic rider and I love it but the noise is nerve racking.
Thanks for watching! I was gonna say it's the electric PTO, but 1990? My only other suggestion is buy a can of belt dressing from the autoparts store? Maybe just the belt squealing. Cheers!
That really was the tip of the iceberg, as it were. The plot thickened rather dramatically upon my returning her mower, but too late for the video. There were several red herrings, but none of that would change what I did, or the value of the video. Cheers!
Just a couple of things number one in the fuel filter on that machine is not really worth calling it a fuel filter. You need to step up to the size filter you’d normally see on a lawn or garden tractor that has a fuel pump on it, those at least are real filters. You might have to replumb things a little bit there but I think you could get er done. The main thing I wanted to talk about, though is the fact of what all the mice and critters do to our engines. We really need to get the covers off of them and make sure they don’t have nests inside which cause a lot of excessive heat and a lot of problems that can result in permanent engine damage. Hint: they look a hell of a lot better when you use the pressure washer on them too!
Great video stella! I have one of these hrr2169vka honda mowers and it doesnt like to roll backwards, i heard its a common issue with these. Probably the Bushings on the rear wheels, have you ever fixed one with this issue if so how did you fix it? Great channel really enjoying it 😊
Could be? I've only replaced the bearings on AYP decks on the drive wheels. I can't imagine it's much different. I have a video I did one time, still have to edit. It was not easy repair. Cheers!
Between these 4 options what would you say is diabetes in a lawn mower? 1. Cracked primer bulb 2. Bad cylinder 3. Dirty spark plug 4. Clogged fuel filter
Sold my neighbor a good running snow thrower. He bought it back months later. Water in carburetor. Sit outside with worthless tecumseh gas cap or in can?
That's a good question. I think you would need both in your hands at the same time to make sure the overall depth of the bowl is the same. Otherwise the bowl screw might warp/deform the bowl, and leak.
I have that exact mower, it would not propel, took it to shop and for $79 they said they adjusted cable, it propelled for 5 minutes, took to Honda dealership and they say it’s transmission and want $600 parts and labor, I paid $450 brand new. Your suggestions please 🙏🏻
Wow, that's some serious coin. Prop up the drive wheels and turn the pulley by hand. If the wheels turn, the transmission is likely OK. Under load however it might be different. I'd definitely be pulling the wheels to look at the pinion gear and the matching wheel gears. This video is not a Honda, but you get the idea: ruclips.net/video/W2ERSoybD7A/видео.html Most of the older Honda transmissions are rebuildable if any of the teeth/gears are chewed up inside. I'd think it would be far less $$ to rebuild. Thanks for watching.
@The Lawnmower Lady I agree completely. I said it because I see so much $#@%@ in mower and weedeater tanks. I started asking to see the gas cans... they have grass and greasy dirt on and in them all the time, drives me crazy. .
If I pull in to a station and a tanker is filling the tanks, I leave. Never get fuel when a tanker is filling or just finishing. If I'm staying local, which is 90% of the time, I fill up at one station. I have three 5 gallon cans for gas. I rotate them. In other words, when one is finished, I clean it out and use another clean one. Good troubleshooting Stella.
Me too on the tanker trucks. A little trash or debris in a 16gal tank in your car is pretty inconsequential with a fuel pump that draws from the top, not so much in these small engine tanks. Mean ol' Mr. Gravity. Thanks for watching.

I'm sure I will get a call 5 years from now, and I'll do the same thing again.... LMAO
FYI - Ethanol raises the Octane level in gas. If straight gas is so much better why do you have to put stabilizer in it for periods of non-use? I think blaming Ethanol is not getting to the real problem. My gas garden equipment (mowers, tillers, trimmers) are idle for 6 months out of the year with ethanol in them. Been doing this for over 20 years and in the case of my mowers they all start pretty much on the first pull with ethanol sitting idle in the equipment for around 6 months every year. Now my tiller may go without use for over a year with a Briggs engine that starts pretty much on the first pull with ethanol sitting in the tank. Another fact there's only 15% of ethanol in gasoline to raise the octane to 87. We use to use lead but that would have been extremely harmful for our respiratory environment. Ethanol isn't perfect but it is never the culprit you all spout. Everyone needs to realize that ethanol is distilled from plants and that we can grow our own fuel that is waaaaaay less harmful than gasoline. Chevron and Exxon are very much aware of that.
breeze787 it's a proven fact ethanol fuel is garbage for small engines if left in the equipment for extended periods of time. It don't believe for one min you let you equipment set for 6 months with ethanol fuel and not starting them regularly and they start on the first or second pull. Ethanol fuel absorbs moisture. I'm sorry it facts
Don't know where you live, but 87 octane around here is 10% ethanol. E15 has 15% ethanol and is some bad stuff for mowers etc. Manufacturers have warnings in owners manuals against use of E15 or higher fuels. It is proven that ethanol fuels will draw moisture from the air. It takes longer for non ethanol fuel to degrade.
@@jimbrewer2893 I completely agree with you. I don't use pump fuel in any of my equipment. I use premix True-fuel for my 2cycles and regular True-fuel in my mower and Tractor. This guy's is off his rocker if he thinks ethanol fuel is good for small engines
@@jimbrewer2893 You are absolutely right I misspoke its 10% ethanol. But you sir are persuaded by the fossil fuel propaganda. I live in the Pacific Northwest and you are right ethanol draws H2O but not enough for it to be a problem for small engines even though manufacturers warn of its usage in their equipment. My experience is that ethanol is a default cause of problems amongst small equipment repair troubleshooting suspicions not the actual truth of the matter.
@breeze787 Most folks don't have the same track record as you for their small engines. I think more of the problem revolves around how equipment is stored. Equipment in a garden shed will have a very different experience during storage than when in a attached (and perhaps insulated) garage. Fuel tanks stored near empty have greater capacity for condensation that a full tank. There are differing amounts of detergents and additives in fuel based on the octane levels. Those detergents are what deteriorates and turn into that gelatin like substance found in the bottom of fuel bowls, that occur after the alcohol evaporates from the ethanol and leaves only water. FWIW, I store my ethanol free fuel in airtight containers without stabilizer for years at a time, with very little problems. I can't say the same when I was using ethanol laced fuel in my small engines. And I tend to agree with you regarding plant based fuel sources, but until we can figure out a way to get it to market completely free of fossil fuels, we're just kicking the can down the road. (The battery tool dilemma is a perfect example) I appreciate you watching, and your comments. Cheers!

@@TheLawnmowerLady yeah I really enjoy you and your channel. This is William I in case u didn’t know. Thanks 🙏 for sharing your videos.
@@TheLawnmowerLady excellent suggestion… thx so much!
Thanks
I've had more then a few carb situation like that, and completely out of gas, or the fuel tap off, even the spark plug boot off.
That was basically it, with a few more red herrings. I learnt a lot when I dropped off the mower, but too late for the video. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Hey! I've experienced symptoms like that due to the fuel cap vent being clogged.
Yep, one of my earlier videos: Quick Tip: Honda Mower GCV160 Stops After a Few Minutes
ruclips.net/video/FqkNixj3GeA/видео.html
Need to tighten up the pull cord. One additional wrap should do it.
I did lube up the starter pawls, and it stopped sticking. The mower lives in a carport. Probably a good deal of moisture. Thanks for watching.
Cheers!
I think you pegged it. Hey your record system and mine are the same
It works! No power or batteries required. LOL Cheers Mr Rooster!
The fuel that came out of that mower looks like someone used the can for a urinal🤮 Looks like you totally found the issue 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching.
Cheers!
I agree bad fuel.
That too!
Between these 4 options what would you say is diabetes in a lawn mower?
1. Cracked primer bulb
2. Bad cylinder
3. Dirty spark plug
4. Clogged fuel filter
Interesting question... I'd almost have to say clogged fuel filter, but bad fuel might be a closer analogy.
@@TheLawnmowerLady thank you for answering
Sold my neighbor a good running snow thrower. He bought it back months later. Water in carburetor. Sit outside with worthless tecumseh gas cap or in can?
Could be?
Can you swap carb bowl on this carburetor with one that has drain plug on it?
That's a good question. I think you would need both in your hands at the same time to make sure the overall depth of the bowl is the same. Otherwise the bowl screw might warp/deform the bowl, and leak.
Wash the lawnmower and container and cover the mower when not in use.Use stabilizer in the gas if you ate not going to use it for a while.😊
That would be awesome if everyone did that. But alas...
Cap not venting?
If it were only that easy! Thanks for watching.
This video is not a Honda, but you get the idea: ruclips.net/video/W2ERSoybD7A/видео.html
Most of the older Honda transmissions are rebuildable if any of the teeth/gears are chewed up inside. I'd think it would be far less $$ to rebuild. Thanks for watching.
That lady needs to got a battery mower
You have to wonder if the junk we all find in the tank came from the machine and the can they used to fill out.
You'd think for sure, but not always the case. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
@The Lawnmower Lady I agree completely. I said it because I see so much $#@%@ in mower and weedeater tanks. I started asking to see the gas cans... they have grass and greasy dirt on and in them all the time, drives me crazy. .
@@GuysPlayingWithTools You'd think one would notice that when filling up their jerry can. Where is my ::rolling eyes:: emoji?
@@TheLawnmowerLady right???
lol I need to send you a Phil shirt
Haha! Phil just did a video, it was a doozie. Still in edit. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
I give people a clear plastic jug , and tell them to pour the gas in their can into the jug . Hold jug up to light , look for dirt / water
Good idea.
Bad gas for sure.
Amongst other things... Thanks for watching!
_"Wouldn't turn over,"_ means something *entirely* different to me. To me, it means, _*i pulled the start cord, and it wouldnt move."_

🤔HMM.. Honda Mower Mystery... Hmm? Multidimensional title I'd say.
It was a mystery, and the plot got thicker after I returned the mower to her. Unfortunately, too late to make it into the video.
@@TheLawnmowerLady 🤔Interesting.. I was too 'acronymious' in my observation to factor in the final client/ tech interactions. All the best to you and yours.👍
I have a customer, had him for years now, and it all started with his yard vac chipper, I would come out, clean his carb, add fresh fuel, and it would run for awhile, and he would add gas from his 5 gallon container, and it would not run, so 5 more carb cleanings, he kept blaming me, and my bad work, I come to find out, the gas in his 5gal container was about 7 years old, and was gas at one time, and he said, pish posh, the gas is fine, so long story short, I got his wife to get rid of the bad gas, and get fresh, so I come out for the last cleaning, and he adds the gas from his newly fueled container, and said see the gas is fine it was your bad work, I wink at the wife, and she winks at me, I'd rather have the old guy mad at me, then his machine not run.... I'm sure I will get a call 5 years from now, and I'll do the same thing again.... LMAO
Yikes! Not sure I want a customer like that anyway. LOL

(The battery tool dilemma is a perfect example)
I appreciate you watching, and your comments. Cheers!
