  • Autism & the senses - in this video I discuss mouth sensitivity along with the sense of taste and how it can affect an autistic person. This is a very complex sense due to it's function, particularly because it can affect eating and drinking.
Gustatory - the sense of taste can be over or under active sensitive, this can affect how a person eats because of the taste of foods. Sometimes the food itself can create sensations in the mouth that are physical. Tingling, itching, prickly, stingy, heightened flavours and it can create tastes that are nothing like the actual food itself. What could be commonly known as an unpleasant taste such as sucking on a lemon could taste really good to some taste sensitive people (for example)
Here are some links to some websites that give more details on Mouth sensitivity and Interoception for your information and further research.

This video discusses some ideas on how to support a child who is autistic and has mouth sensitivities, particularly regarding food and drink. It also talks about the need to put things into the mouth purely for the sensations it can create that are pleasurable.
Breaking down the reasons (there are many and this video is by no means comprehensive of those reasons)
it is always a good idea to check with a doctor for any illnesses that may cause your child or autistic person to not eat or overeat. Once it has been established that it isn't a health issue, it could mean they have the taste and mouth sensitivities discussed in this video.
This topic is discussed purely from the perspective of a healthy Autistic person that has mouth and taste sensitivities - this condition can be experienced by neuro typical people also.

Spot on my son. What would you replace mud as my son loves the stuff? Oddly he won't eat anything soft usual but mud he will. I know it all do with sensory. He 4 years old. He loves crunchy food but texture got to be right. Meat and veggies we can't get him to eat but we notice how he will come over to see what we eating. He touches a carrot once and throws it across the room but for him to touch it. I praise him and he was like oh and I think the school will help a lot. Thanks again
