  • Autism and tactile -touch sensory issues are the subject of this weeks video. Touch in this instance can mean to be touched by another human or animal, to have clothing or materials touch the skin anywhere on the body. Deep pressure touch or gentle touch can be either pleasant or deeply uncomfortable, some touch can bring a great deal of peace and relaxation.
Another tactile sensitivity can be created by sensations that words can bring to an individual who is sensitive to touch. We all know the expression 'makes my skin crawl' This can happen with certain words spoken , the tone of a voice or sound, a smell or even a food type. Receiving the sensory information can be felt through to or on the skin, before it reaches into the internal part of the sensory information.
For this video I speak of some examples of what my son had with his sensitivities to touch. How he has developed his own sensory diet of what feels good to him and what does not. This sensory need was big for him, it could create a lot of discomfort and distress if the materials were not right or he had no way of feeling relief particularly from materials of clothing.
For him, being given the freedom to choose what he could tolerate on his body by means of clothing especially nightwear meant he had a stress free existence at home. This also enabled him to become used to wearing more clothing as he got older.
If clothing can create sensations of itching, a feeling of claustrophobia and suppression (to name a few) interacting with anyone or anything else can be near on impossible.
Equally ensuring he had materials that he loved to touch and wear gave him peace and a sensory satisfaction that enabled him to feel happy and balanced in all aspects of his life.
