    I have a little boy who is severely autistic. He's 5 and The sweetest little guy in the entire world 🥹 unfortunately he has so many feeding adversions he does not eat solids. Only Gerber #2 fruit...spoon fed to him. He drinks toddler formula out of a bottle. (But only takes 2-3 daily) He will not use a cup. anytime we have tried he just lets the water or beverage drip down out of his mouth he will not swallow it. We've tried putting water in a bottle and to no avail he will not drink the water He will not swallow it. He just spits it right back out I've tried so many different things we've tried flavored waters I've tried even giving him medicine syringes of water throughout the day and even that he fights me and spits it out. He has chronic constipation as a result of not getting the fluids that has body needs. I want to get him started on a G-tube because I think we'll definitely be able to get the fluids in him this way and it will solve a lot of problems. his feeding therapist agrees it would be the best course of action but my husband is very against it. So this is another battle that I am fighting. He seems to think that he will start drinking soon. he doesn't want to have to put a hole in my son's stomach and feed him through a tube....and I understand this. No one wants to get a G tube for their child. In this case I believe it's medically necessary. I have tried everything in this video, countless times and I know it was posted years ago so I was wondering if you had any new ideas or tips regarding getting an autistic child to drink. I'm really desperate to get him water and fluids 😢 thank you for taking the time to read this. Much appreciated ❤

    I'm autistic, and I can relate to this. I sometimes have problems with drinking enough too. At times, it can be because I'm distracted, often from being online or watching the TV. Sometimes I'll make a cup of tea and end up forgetting about it. There were times when I didn't want to go to the loo as a child, because obviously it meant I had to stop whatever I was doing at the time to go, which still is an issue now at times. When I was in school, there was an issue with locks on the cubicle doors being damaged, meaning I couldn't get the privacy I needed. Other times, it was that I needed the loo in class, but the teacher wouldn't let me go. I had problems with incontinence, although it was due to the stress of being bullied at the time, which was made worse by the teachers refusing to do anything about it, and having 2 teachers who were teacher bullies as well. I've tried getting cups and mugs with designs I like on them, which in some cases has helped though.

    Belle, you may not be an occupational therapist, but you understand & explain sensory issues (& interoception in particular) better than any "professional" (or any neurotypical for that matter!) As a spectrum adult, I have significant sensory issues, sound sensitivity in particular, but also tactile. No seams or tags for me! But after spending years dealing with chronic gastrointestinal issues & countless doctors I've come to the conclusion that interoceptive sensitivity is at the root of my tummy troubles. The sensation of food moving through my system is just very uncomfortable, no matter what diet I try. A thousand thank you's to you for so capably enlightening the world on sensory & other spectrum issues!

    Hi! I'm I have autism and for some reason I literally don't drink , I think it's because my brain doesn't send the messages to me that I'm thirsty and I can go all day without water. In the summer it's especially bad because of the heat, I didn't drink for 3 days and for some reason the more you ask me the more I resist. Later on I got heat stroke and nearly passed out. It's gotten worse especially through quarantine! I really like ice so I might try little ice cubes in a cup so thank you. My parents have tried everything so here I am. It's gotten really bad I'm quite worried too but this helped ease that 😁 Also I forget easily and when me resisting gets bad my parents get worried cause it's dangerous which I understand and that makes me feel lazy or like a bother too. I just came here to understand why this is happening too

    You are wonderful and very compassionate. My Grandson will be 2 on December 4. He’s very physical and loves to climb, but he has these issues... Falling more than normal, rubbing food in his hair, sniffing food and objects, and constantly messing with his ears or will actually rub his nose on you. Can you speak to some of these issues. These are just odd things he does, no diagnosis has been made. Young parents often are so busy working, they just think I’m absorbed in You Tube and that I’m a worrier.

    We having difficulty with our son. He don’t like it he nearly 4. I will share this with my hubby as he does it. We use rubber thumb the dentist said about it. It about patients which my hubby not have I think it going be me taking over as we seem be closer as you said trust. I am like you I rather do little at time and build up. We brush them he will walk away he knows the routine he will pick up his drink cheeky. Think night time he get super tired so brushing teeth is hard. Got question my son will play with his teeth in day any ideas why it not pain he would cry he cry when in pain but I think he super sentive just thinking what you think or experience?

    • @belleberroyer3054
      @belleberroyer3054 4 года назад

      Hello, well i guess checking to see if he is in pain first, if you can get him to maybe have a painkiller suitable for his age? not sure if that is feasible. Or speak with a dentist for advice. he maybe playing with his teeth because they hurt or he maybe playing with them as a habit, tick, stim, he could be figuring out the sensations of his teeth. i would try using the tips i suggest, change toothpaste to an non fluoride if you havent already, then use the smallest lightest brush you can ,like a baby brush. get him to drink water if you can to help rinse the teeth of any sugars. always finish the brushing when he needs it finishing and you can build it up, it took us years to get to the point we are now, o patience is key. good luck!

    Aspergers 23 year old woman here 🙈 When I was a child I also didn’t understand why it is important because my body wasn’t telling me that I am thirsty. I never was thirsty and therefore hated drinking! It felt unneeded. Now as an adult I don’t like swallowing it, it also feels like it hurts my teeth, I don’t like my lips to be wet... idk just the feeling...it is still hard to describe. I still don’t feel thirsty and that is hard, because it is easy to forget and still feels unnecessary. And even when I feel thirsty after like a day of not drinking (or even two) I won’t drink until I feel dizzy or get a headache. So annoying! And I am concerned for my health, I really am, but it is such a struggle. I just don’t want to drink.... Fun glasses, mugs or water bottles and straws seem to help. Especially straws in the sense of sensation. But usually it only helps for a few days...:/ I really wish to be normal, because so many things seem unmanageable, things that are normal for others.... e.g. drinking water, brushing teeth, eating, grocery shopping, organize the day.... I am so tired of living alone and feeling defeated all day by small tasks.... thanks for the video! it gave me some strength and inspiration to keep trying!

      hello, bless you, thank you for commenting. i hear you. have you tried using a droplet pippet thingy? you can buy larger ones online and get the water directly into the back of the throat.? or try very thin straws so only a small amount goes down your throat at a time. as you have said you are worried for your health maybe you could start 'training' your body and mind to meet in the middle by saying things like, ' i know i do not like the sensation of drinking yet i do know my body needs it to thrive and survive, i love my self enough to drink...i am safe drinking the water that nourishes me ... drink bottled water or boiled water and see it as a beautiful life force filled with sparkly love...(or whatever it is that you really love... please know they are only suggestions and genuinely offering help...you have taught me something new about why it can be difficult to drink water.. and i will share your experience hopefully to help other parents of autistic children and adults

      Hi.. Its so true how different we all are. The daily recimme ded water intake from health authorities simply isn't a one size fits all. I think from the feedback I have received on this subject water is, like any other thing an In dividual resource. Finding ways to monitor and manage water/liquid intake is what's important so that the body can stay as healthy as possible. Which of course can aid sleep patterns, emotional states and many other aspects for a human to function in their best way.

    Hi, Clara Lloyd sent me the link to your channel as she thought I’d be interested. Love what you’re doing and your intentions for the future. I’m an ex special needs teacher and run a training company for autism and dyslexia awareness. I’m based In Aberystwyth, it would be lovely to meet up and have a chat. My email address is: swyddfaenfys@gmail.com if you’d like to get in touch. Einir xx
