Flushing a single cylinder Tohatsu/Mercury/Mariner/Nissan outboard - using the flushing plug

  • My Tohatsu is fixed on my sailing boat and therefore it cannot flushed easily. A bucket or else does not work, neither do the muffs.
    I saw the plug in the manual but could not find any information on the internet nor on RUclips about it, like how to use or connect where on the outboard. In the video I used my Mariner, which also made by Tohatsu, but it has exactly the same design as the other outboards (Mercury, Tohatsu, Mariner, Nissan etc).
    I bought this plug or connector on eBay for around 20 GBP including shipping. And made this crappy video.
    Note: the water runs a bit too slow probably but I needed to check if it worked. And it did.

    Read the manual again and again and could not work this out. 4 years on and you are still the only person to explain it!

    Thanks for sharing this. You're the only one on RUclips I'm aware of that has demonstrated this on these tiny outboard motors.

    I agree with others, yours is the only video I could find showing the use of this adapter. Thanks very much!

    Thank you for the video. Just bought a 2020 6hp tohatsu sailpro long shaft for my sailboat. Impossible to flush when the boat is in the water so I bought an adapter with a garden hose connect. I couldn't for the life of me figure out which bolt to unscrew to flush it like you did. Your video helped me locate the bolt to unscrew to attach my flush adapter. Thank you!!! It is not a crappy video, haha.

      Hi Mike, indeed very unclear so I thought give a try on my old Mariner. Absolutely unclear why Tohatsu does not push this more.

      @@Mark-ue6pm It pushes our Cape Dory 22 sailboat to hull speed if we want, but that is only 6.2mph. We back it off at 3/4 throttle and we do 5.5 mph. Our boat has a displacement of 3400 pounds, with 1400 lead in the full keel, plus us, and gear, probably 4000 pounds total displacement.

    Thanks for this! I have a 2019 Tohatsu 6HP and they still have the same bolt for flushing. I had no idea until watching this. btw, I was able to flush by just pressing a hose against the hole as I didn't have the adapter.

    Most hoses have metal thread at the end, why would tohatsu make such weird attachment? They want me to cut my hose just so i can flush tohatsu?

    Should you run the motor while flush? I think you need to get it up to temperature so the thermostat opens and clean water will flush the entire cooling system. If not up to temperature. Then salt remains in cooling jackets.

    • @siyunchinn3904
      @siyunchinn3904 Год назад

      I think you need to run the motor while flush otherwise the thermostat will remain closed and the water won't reach the jacket loop.

    • @siyunchinn3904
      @siyunchinn3904 Год назад +1

      I might be wrong. Just read the service manual and it says "NOTE: Do not run the engine while flushing the cooling system."

    • @ia6980
      @ia6980 3 месяца назад

      Only at idle temp, ive read some dude melted impeller while running at higher rpm during flush

    • @DrDuke333
      @DrDuke333 Месяц назад

      Correct, do not run an outboard when the impeller doesn't have water feeding it. Do as the manual says " "NOTE: Do not run the engine while flushing the cooling system." If you run it at all, any speed, the impeller could (most likely) be damaged.

    Hello,
    Just found your video, thanks for uploading it. The Tohatsu manual for my little 5hp is very sketchy on the subject.
    What I would like to know is if I can leave the adapter in all or the time or not bloody nuisance having to remove it all the time, and I know I’m going to lose it.
    What if I set up a short hose fitting with a gate valve in it and a hose connector on the end ?
    Thanks, Dean

    Hi Mark, by using this way to flash the salt water do you think it will go all the way the cooling system? There is not info in the outboard manual. Thank you so much for sharing..cheers
