I was born in America but many of my relatives immigrated as adults so they have accents. My mom is fluent in english but she came here at the age of 21, so still has an accent. I can see the difference in reactions toward her when she speaks vs the way they treat me. They can be condescending, rude jerks. Like any country we have our really nice people and then we have the not so nice ones.

As a foreigner who speaks some korean, I have to say people in Korea were all so nice to me. There was once a bus driver who was talking badly about foreigners in korean and I stood behind him. I understood why though. He told them to go to the back of the bus so that others can get in but he said it in Korean, how should they understand? I personally met so many really nice people and there is definitely some kind of bonus for when you show interest in culture and can speak the language. I got free stuff at basically every store. Face masks, sweets, a corndog😂. One bad person was there in Busan but other than that.. I wish my home country was a bit more like that. On the other hand we have so many foreigners here, so many mixed cultures. We can all do our own part and be nice and teach our children to be nice and respectful.
As a person living in USA and spending 14 days in Korea (I know is was a short visit) the only thing I missed was my car ( for the convenience of just getting out of my house, hop into my car and drive to my destination) and my dog. But once I learned a little bit how to use public transportation ( which by the way is really easy to learn) I was thinking about extending my stay for one more week. I loved my stay there. Already planning my trip for next year
Same, I spent so much time in Seoul either on buses or the subway and except for one station where I got a little lost trying to find the exit I needed, it was so easy and convenient. All the signs and menus already have English translations, what else do people want?

I think because it is already so mixed, we have such a wide variety of ethnicities especially if you go to states with higher diversity. But I also see how it can be stressful and some Americans are certainly more rude.
When I visited NY, the most diverse city in the world, nobody tried to speak to me and my family anything but English. I was the only one in my family who spoke a bit of English but my family spoke no English. I was just 13 and I had to make a phone call with the guy who rent us the room and I was struggling very much. In Europe at least people speak a bunch of languages and if you can't understand English, they will try with French, German, Spanish or any other language they know to help you out. I found it weird since NY is so touristy and diverse, I expected people to speak multiple languages. I guess the rest of the USA is even worst.

Its always a silly statement to lump all of the US together. Some states are bigger than European countries. The whole country cannot be the same and it REALLY isnt.
"America is accommodating" - How many stores can speak Japanese, Korean or X language? How many Americans know and respect foreign cultures, countries, etc (I've seen plenty of videos where Americans cannot even name 3 different countries, how can they respect their cultures in that case)? Nah, America can be friendly, but only as long as it won't become an inconvenience. In Japan and Korea, people go out of their way to be accommodating, even if they are inconvenienced or are helping a foreign with their own stupidity (got lost, lost their wallet, is asking for directions, etc).
I think america is accomodating in the sense more that in (some) places its very diverse so even if you dont speak english you can somehow grt by with your language. Also a lot of services are available in minority languages which you don’t see in many places. I noticed in japan all buses and tourist info was written in japanese korean english and chinese wow! Sometimes even thai and viet! Whereas in quebec they refuse to out anything except for french, even though they receive tons of tourists a year and is part of canada lol! Every place is different
I visited Baku in 2023. Only 1% population speaks English. Our hotel only had one person on duty who could communicate with us in broken english. Rest of our trip, we used hand gestures to try to talk to locals. Never complained about it. It was a fun experience. My mum haggled with shop keepers for discount using hand gestures and the whole spiel "lets go, we find something better elsewhere".
I understand his point but it's also good to accommodate foreigners who come to visit your country and show them kindness. It's not an obligation to speak English but it's always good to learn other language and knowing to speak English is very beneficial.

As an American, I agree with the fact that all of the people who think they are better than everyone else thinks that when they go to another place or country, they think the people there are going to kiss their asses or worship the ground they walk on, when the world doesn’t revolve around them. Me and my dad are planning on going on a trip to Japan, and we’re actually taking the time to look things up and learn the language too. The people who don’t, I recommend that before you go anywhere, don’t expect there to be English, because it’s not going to help. Expecting English and knowing there’s English are two different things. If you’ve never been, take the time to learn about the culture and language so that you’re not rude or seeming rude. Being someone from a third world country, I’m already pleased and impressed by the safety in Korea, that’s enough to me, friendly or not depends mostly on individual to individual, plus I believe if you want to travel to some country, you would’ve at least searched up a little bit about the language, not expecting everyone will know fluent English, because it’s not their obligation. As a New Yorker I get annoyed with tourists disrupting my day to day, and they forget that people actually live and work here. And they tend to complain a bunch too, mostly because they haven't researched properly and have no common sense. They forget this is a real place and not some glittery fantasy land. Yes, United States is accommodating when it comes to businesses, but not on daily life. Most native Americans speak only English. It is unrealistic to go to a foreign country not knowing at least the basics and expecting others to accommodate you with English, especially when living there.
I agree with him even though I didn't feel like Korea was at all unwelcoming or unaccomodating to foreigners, speaking as a foreigner myself. I'm pretty introverted with strangers so I was fine with interaction with strangers not being a big thing there and was prepared to use my phone to translate things but I genuinely didn't even really need to very much while I was there. People were friendly enough in my experience and tended to speak first in English to me. Could be because I was mostly in areas that had more foreigners though.
Just a few days ago my sister came back from a cosmetic shop and sighed "Ugh, that lady couldn't speak a bit of English and didn't even give me a bag." And I said "Oh yeah? And did you try to say anything in Korean to her? Anything at all? No? Well there you go." I swear, this approach that somehow Koreans owe something to the rest of the world and need to be more accommodating - no. Especially when literally all you need to do is say "hello" in Korean and they will immediately accept you to your family (:D:D:D:D happened to me several times!!)
As a minority american I disagree not every city in the states is accommodating. You have racist people telling you to go back to your country and making fun of you due to your race/culture. There are more countries that are accommodating than the U.S. Especially due to the influx of immigrants coming to the U.S many americans are tired of foreigners. I personally keep to myself and as long as no one is doing anything to me I won’t be rude and try to be accommodating or helpful. Everyone is different and to each their own.
Yup for sure. I’m first gen American and there are a lot of places that have been downright hostile. I’ll never forget having to stop in a gas station in West Virginia in the middle of nowhere. That’s the only time I really understood the term sundown town.

All the foreigners I meet here in Korea seem to be so superficial, in it for the tail and kpop, never set foot in a traditional market and wrinkle up their nose at the idea of Korean traditional food. That is also my experience! These damn American (I am from there too, but I am Jamaican). I went on a tour with a group of retired veterans, and ALL the wife did was complain and complain. They only ate American food, and then complain more. I had to distance myself. I'm visiting your country. If you don't want to talk to me, don't. But I going to enjoy my experience. So far, everyone has been awesome and my experiences have been good.
Look if you're going to a foreign country, take the time to at least research and learn at least the very basic and useful phrases of that country. I speak Korean on a toddler level but best believe I was speaking Korean when I could or using papago. I was not expecting them to use English, because English isn't their language. A lot of Americans expects the world to cater to them, and as an American im disgusted by this mindset. Contrary to popular belief the world does NOT revolve around us. And like he said, the country is friendly enough. I found them more friendly towards me and my friends when we actually attempted to speak their language, instead of complaining that they didn't speak English or understand us.
Taxi drivers in Seoul have no patience for foreigners. This is what I noticed. And experienced. One taxi driver dumped us on the side of the road because they couldn’t understand English! Very rude.

They usually have separate accounts for each language they communicate in, but otherwise, I'd just throw it into Google Translate and/or search for articles that are in a language that I can speak. Not everything will be in your language(s).

I agree with him. Well I've never traveled to Korea I have traveled to many countries overseas. I have found that many Americans are very rude and entitled. They expect to be catered to in these countries to a certain degree. They get annoyed when everyone doesn't speak English. They complain about food they don't like. They don't try to comply with that country's traditions and manners. They think other countries peoples are rude even though they're in their country. In other words, they don't try to adapt to the country they're visiting they want the country and the people to adapt to an American way of life. This is very entitled and presumptuous. Plus it gives those Americans and other foreign travelers of bad name. There are many of us that just want to learn and be respectful and if we do something rude it is an unexpected oversight. If you go and visit, no. You must learn the lingua franca of the world. If you go for work staying for a while, learn at least the basics of the foreign country's native lexicon. If you plan on staying on said foreign country long term then you must learn the country's language or, in some cases, one of it's regional languages depending which part of the country you are going to stay.

I think because it is already so mixed, we have such a wide variety of ethnicities especially if you go to states with higher diversity. But I also see how it can be stressful and some Americans are certainly more rude.
When I visited NY, the most diverse city in the world, nobody tried to speak to me and my family anything but English.
I was the only one in my family who spoke a bit of English but my family spoke no English. I was just 13 and I had to make a phone call with the guy who rent us the room and I was struggling very much. In Europe at least people speak a bunch of languages and if you can't understand English, they will try with French, German, Spanish or any other language they know to help you out.
I found it weird since NY is so touristy and diverse, I expected people to speak multiple languages. I guess the rest of the USA is even worst.

"America is accommodating" - How many stores can speak Japanese, Korean or X language? How many Americans know and respect foreign cultures, countries, etc (I've seen plenty of videos where Americans cannot even name 3 different countries, how can they respect their cultures in that case)? Nah, America can be friendly, but only as long as it won't become an inconvenience. In Japan and Korea, people go out of their way to be accommodating, even if they are inconvenienced or are helping a foreign with their own stupidity (got lost, lost their wallet, is asking for directions, etc).

I think america is accomodating in the sense more that in (some) places its very diverse so even if you dont speak english you can somehow grt by with your language. Also a lot of services are available in minority languages which you don’t see in many places. I noticed in japan all buses and tourist info was written in japanese korean english and chinese wow! Sometimes even thai and viet! Whereas in quebec they refuse to out anything except for french, even though they receive tons of tourists a year and is part of canada lol! Every place is different
I visited Baku in 2023. Only 1% population speaks English. Our hotel only had one person on duty who could communicate with us in broken english. Rest of our trip, we used hand gestures to try to talk to locals. Never complained about it. It was a fun experience. My mum haggled with shop keepers for discount using hand gestures and the whole spiel "lets go, we find something better elsewhere".
I understand his point but it's also good to accommodate foreigners who come to visit your country and show them kindness. It's not an obligation to speak English but it's always good to learn other language and knowing to speak English is very beneficial.

As a Kiwi I LOVED Korea and I never expected special treatment, but I was embraced by Koreans I met. I still miss it
actually in America to this day people still tell foreigners to speak English and belittle them as if they’re unintelligent. I mean yeah the US can be super accommodating but they can also be super racist and xenophobic. But you never here the foreigners that come to the US say “WELL WHY DONT YOU LEARN MY LANGUAGE” that is an American mindset that people should do things for you instead of you doing things to make it easier for them.

As an American, I agree with the fact that all of the people who think they are better than everyone else thinks that when they go to another place or country, they think the people there are going to kiss their asses or worship the ground they walk on, when the world doesn’t revolve around them. Me and my dad are planning on going on a trip to Japan, and we’re actually taking the time to look things up and learn the language too. The people who don’t, I recommend that before you go anywhere, don’t expect there to be English, because it’s not going to help. Expecting English and knowing there’s English are two different things. If you’ve never been, take the time to learn about the culture and language so that you’re not rude or seeming rude. It’s common sense

Being someone from a third world country, I’m already pleased and impressed by the safety in Korea, that’s enough to me, friendly or not depends mostly on individual to individual, plus I believe if you want to travel to some country, you would’ve at least searched up a little bit about the language, not expecting everyone will know fluent English, because it’s not their obligation. I think that none of those people are from New York. lol honestly it sounds just like that here in NY. As a New Yorker I get annoyed with tourists disrupting my day to day, and they forget that people actually live and work here. And they tend to complain a bunch too, mostly because they haven't researched properly and have no common sense. They forget this is a real place and not some glittery fantasy land. New Yorkers are also used to people not speaking English because lots of residents here don't. Idk I think New Yorkers would have an easier time overall

I agree with him even though I didn't feel like Korea was at all unwelcoming or unaccomodating to foreigners, speaking as a foreigner myself. I'm pretty introverted with strangers so I was fine with interaction with strangers not being a big thing there and was prepared to use my phone to translate things but I genuinely didn't even really need to very much while I was there. People were friendly enough in my experience and tended to speak first in English to me. Could be because I was mostly in areas that had more foreigners though.
Just a few days ago my sister came back from a cosmetic shop and sighed "Ugh, that lady couldn't speak a bit of English and didn't even give me a bag." And I said "Oh yeah? And did you try to say anything in Korean to her? Anything at all? No? Well there you go." I swear, this approach that somehow Koreans owe something to the rest of the world and need to be more accommodating - no. Especially when literally all you need to do is say "hello" in Korean and they will immediately accept you to your family (:D:D:D:D happened to me several times!!)

As a minority american I disagree not every city in the states is accommodating. You have racist people telling you to go back to your country and making fun of you due to your race/culture. Yup for sure. I’m first gen American and there are a lot of places that have been downright hostile. I’ll never forget having to stop in a gas station in West Virginia in the middle of nowhere. That’s the only time I really understood the term sundown town.

That is also my experience! These damn American (I am from there too, but I am Jamaican). I went on a tour with a group of retired veterans, and ALL the wife did was complain and complain. They only ate American food, and then complain more. I had to distance myself. I'm visiting your country. If you don't want to talk to me, don't. But I going to enjoy my experience. Look if you're going to a foreign country, take the time to at least research and learn at least the very basic and useful phrases of that country. I speak Korean on a toddler level but best believe I was speaking Korean when I could or using papago. I was not expecting them to use English, because English isn't their language. A lot of Americans expects the world to cater to them, and as an American im disgusted by this mindset. Contrary to popular belief the world does NOT revolve around us. Taxi drivers in Seoul have no patience for foreigners. This is what I noticed. And experienced. One taxi driver dumped us on the side of the road because they couldn’t understand English! Very rude.

I agree with him. Well I've never traveled to Korea I have traveled to many countries overseas. I have found that many Americans are very rude and entitled. They expect to be catered to in these countries to a certain degree. They get annoyed when everyone doesn't speak English. They complain about food they don't like. They don't try to comply with that country's traditions and manners. They think other countries peoples are rude even though they're in their country. In other words, they don't try to adapt to the country they're visiting they want the country and the people to adapt to an American way of life. This is very entitled and presumptuous. Plus it gives those Americans and other foreign travelers of bad name. There are many of us that just want to learn and be respectful and if we do something rude it is an unexpected oversight.
