Not having ability to add or replace RAM is a horrendous design. I don't think it adds much to the cost to put a memory seat instead of soldering it on the mb. I would not buy this laptop.
Good.
Yes, I was quite disappointed after getting one, I was sure I'd be able to add some RAM.
You can replace the RAM, its just confusing. Under the metal box he points at theres a slot. Its just shielding, you can lift it up and install your RAM. I went crazy trying to find the RAM slot, its tricky to find if you don't know what your looking for.
so many free space
So you can not add a sata ssd in this one even if there is place for one.
in my i have sata connector
Great video thanks, please, this unit have an additional connector for a SSD? thanks
Is there space for hdd 2.5"?
Space is available but sata connector is not available
I got this because of budget constraints and services of other brands are not good in my area. But as a first time windows user i found that 8GB soldered ram sucks. Windows alone uses 5gigs of ram and 2 gigs are reserved for IGPU i have no choice but to run most of my apps on virtual ram.
if you can play games or not?
@@Shadow0347 I can definitely play lots of games but at low to very low settings.
@@Shadow0347 Don't even consider the Lenovo V15 Gen 4 laptop for gaming. The integrated GPU is extremely weak (Radeon 610M, which is weaker than the Radeon Vega 6/7 graphics in older Ryzen CPUs like the Ryzen 3 5300U and Ryzen 5 5500U, which you can get in very similar and sometimes cheaper laptops like the Lenovo V15 Gen 2) and it doesn't have enough RAM.
The Lenovo V15 Gen 2 also has a (DDR4) SODIMM slot so you can upgrade the RAM, which is not possible on the Gen 4 because it uses LPDDR5.
I upgraded the ram in a v15 gen4. Specially bought the 8gb version because there was a free slot. Not sure how this is in the 16gb version.
From 1 RAM slot to no slots, from a full-sized PCie slot to a 42mm one...and there's no space decrease in the laptop from the previous gen. What a series of awful downgrades. Lenovo is really on a mission to ruin its low-cost devices.
They do be going more anti consumer route. I wanted to buy this laptop but seeing This I changed my mind.
All of these companies do this with many of their laptops. The trend is to move to 100% soldered RAM and ROM. Apple have been doing this for a while now, and considering that their computers are far too expensive for what you are getting this makes them the biggest bastards at the moment. If you need a new laptop then get one quick with non-soldered RAM and ROM because such computers will disappear within the next couple of years. That being said, I expected a lot more from Lenovo. Their laptops have always been easy to open and service. Being able to swap out RAM and ROM is part of the service aspect. Whether the user wishes to upgrade or replace a defective part. However, just like the bastards at Apple the other companies also want the consumer to throw a computer away and purchase a new one instead of being able to repair it. I've already worked on laptops that don't even have a CPU cooler. This is OK if the CPU really doesn't get very hot at all, even if you push it. But I'll bet that they'll find a way to design a CPU or Nand (SSD) to degrade over time due to heat exposure or general usage, thus forcing the consumer to throw the computer away after a few years of usage.
This device is part of planned obsolescence scam.
That is trend nowadays, that have some advantages as sturdiness. Aim is that it serves you as it is.
Hey guys. I would like to change the ssd in this one but mine is a little longer. Can i move the mounting place to the other spot on the left or i have to glue it?
Do you know if replacing the M.2 SSD (to put a bigger one of 1TB or such) would avoid laptop warranty ?
Opening the laptop for any reason voids warranty
@@GOOD_FARMER No it doesn't, unless they can demonstrate that doing so caused the damage you are trying to get warranty coverage for.
Or at least, that's how it works in the EU and other places with good consumer protection laws. Different countries may have different warranty conditions.
Can the RAM embedded in the motherboard be increased?
no
Technically yes if you have BGA soldering equipment and a source of working LPDDR5 chips.
Otherwise no.
Replacing soldered RAM chips is difficult and unreliable.
Interestingly, an upgradeable LPDDR5 module spec (CAMM2) has been developed but afaik no laptop actually uses it yet. The Lenovo V15 Gen 4 isn't compatible with it, but some future Lenovo laptops might be.
0:36 what? Why then my lasts only for 2 hours? I bought it 2 hours ago, and i didn't play a game on it, yet
It looks like you can install 80 mm sata M.2
no , it is 42 mm nvme M.2
@@coolNotCold9376 The preinstalled SSD is 42mm, but there is a screw hole in position to allow you to swap the preinstalled SSD with an 80mm one.
How to install 2.5" ssd?
You can't in this version of the laptop, there is no header to install a SATA connector into.
@@nathangamble125 Thanks for responding, unexpectedly a SATA connector arrived in the box, I couldn't believe it.
thanks
Hey, thanks for the video. Are the speakers loud enough for media consumption?
No
That is disappointing. I love(d) Lenovo. Durable, good looking, upgradable (to some extend), repairable... And they were with higher pricetag for that. I still have somewhere functional C200 (which still had IBM logo) that had a special door for cleaning fan. But now... soldered RAM? One internal battery, so I cannot swap empty battery? And the insides are... just ugly. It looks like it was not engineered, but quickly put together in MS paint.
If the ram is soldered, does it mean it runs in single-channel? If so, doesn't it ruin the performance a lot?
It doesn't really matter for 8gb ram variant. But if you are getting 16GB variant then i suggest you to get a different laptop. I have this and it sucks that I can't upgrade ram or install any other SSD.
@@GOOD_FARMER I was wondering if I should pick up the variant with 512gb ssd and 16gb of ram. Because I won't really need more storage space, but I'm a bit worried about the ram. I wouldn't game on it, so the single-channel ram maybe wouldn't be a big problem. The only thing that sucks for you is that you can't upgrade your ram, or does it cause performance issues as well?
I think it depends by the soldering layout, I think you can check the dual channel with a software such as CPU-Z
@@gameofflife I actually bought it a few days ago, it has dual channel ram.
It's technically not single-channel, but only because it's LPDDR5.
LPDDR channels are only 32 bits wide, while DDR channels are 64 bits wide, so dual-channel LPDDR5 has (roughly) equivalent bandwidth to single-channel DDR5 and is slower than most dual-channel DDR4.
Most laptops (and handheld PCs like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally) with LPDDR RAM are actually quad-channel (128 bits total, equivalent to dual-channel DDR), though some low-end laptops that use LPDDR (including the V15 Gen 4 and all other laptops with a Ryzen 3 7320U or Ryzen 5 7520U) are dual-channel.
Will this fit 2280 m.2 nvme ssd?
Yes, if you remove the preinstalled SSD.
What a shit !? Soldered RAM? Small SSD module, in previous Gen3 was at least one slot for ram and space for longer SSD. Things become worse from year to year.
How do you install an OS on this piece of junk??? USBs are not detectable, the dissasembly is a NIGHTMARE without the tools, WTF CAN I DO?
take the ssd , put it in another laptop, start installing windows 10 and after first restart , shut down and move ssd to new laptop....and continue the install process.
great review, but is this not amongst the very worst of laptops around? I mean Lenovo are supposed to lead the way with engineering quality. This laptop was designed by a diversity hire probably!
Thanks
