THANK YOU!! FOR MENTIONING GEISHA!! While the official job of a geisha was entertaining with music and dance, in pre-modern Japan, entertainment and sex work were not too clearly divided. Like for example, many kabuki actresses, then male child actors, were also selling sex on the side - which led to the Bakufu banning women and young boys from performing kabuki. Not only do their profession automatically link them to the pleasure quarter, the geisha themselves - while appearing more understated than the oiran - were also selling a kind of erotic service in form of music, dance, appearance and conversation. And of course, some of them sold sex (just not as part of their geisha service, kinda like a part-time gig). Thus, in the early decades of modern Japan, geisha were still considered the "bad girls" of society, that modern Japanese women should NOT aspire to be (under the mantra of "good wives, wise mothers"). The reason this idea is turned completely over its head is because at one point, the postwar government were cracking down on prostitution, and in order to spare geisha of the ban that would have killed the profession, tea house owners and other advocates began to argue that geisha are actually the opposite of prostitution. That they are chaste, highly sophisticated, graceful women, who are proud symbols and protectors of traditional Japan. Hence, how it is. But even now, the service a geisha or maiko offer still carries erotic undertones, like the way their kimono collars are pulled lower than how kimono are usually worn, or how they entertain with light conversations and flatter their clients, or how much alcohol are often involved in their "games." Other than tourists with money to spare, most of their private party clients are rich people and/or high-ranking politicians, usually men. Recently, a former maiko spoke out about how she was sexually harassed by her clients multiple times, one time even persuaded to drink alcohol while she was still underage, another time a client asked her to bathe with him. So I think not only is the profession still exposing young women to situations where they can potentially find themselves taken advantage of, but the narrative that they are "pure chaste artistic angels and preservers of Japanese traditional culture" is preventing any productive discussion about how to make this job safer for its practitioners.
What I think a lot of people get wrong about geisha is how they're essentially just a much fancier version of hostesses. In the modern era, it's so much harder to get into the industry and there are far fewer, so the likelihood of anything sexual is close to nil, but it doesn't mean people won't still harass them or attempt to cross that line. In the past? Well, strippers aren't supposed to sell sex either but there will always be people who want to make more money. Even with hostesses every patron will still dream that it's real and there's a chance to have sex with her, and some will be willing to take advantage of those desires.

Like everything in life, there are gray areas. Duble resagurge Geisha who did "side" work did happen. Also the Geisha are sometimes called Gigi. Just like a big fast food chan has different rules under different francesees, and that could differ from courpret run ones , so a lot of Geisha and geisha house was like that, add in different regions with there own little flare and you get the fast food francesees, courpret fast food, and even the international fast food. It's kinda like how McDonald's in different countries are ran do things different then a USA McDonald's down the street vs the McDonald's that are Owen and Ran by the courpataion and not "leased" to the francesees who also have there own dfrrinces based on verying facters and they all operate a little different from each other. I'm just using McDonald's as an example, many fast food and places that have freanceees do this. Good video lymphame , a nice short way to get the point across without making a hours long documentry on it. (I'd definitely be down for a hours long deep dive on the pleasure quarters and the women inhabited it and those who about circle it) 😊
What the hell is up with your spelling?
Very informative and entertaining. Thank you!
HOLY SHIT tea houses are primative version of maid cafes
It's strange that there aren't more books on prostitution. I hope Linfamy publishes one.
People only want to talk about history when they have some narrative they want to try and shove down people's throats. Often political correctness or anti.
A picture book
I hope you do a video on japan contact with other Asian nations and the foreign officials in Japan during the Middle Ages
It's very easy to each sushi with only one chopstick: throw it away and use your fingers, this is legit by food etiquette in Japan.
Also the capital of Japan during Edo period was Kyoto - Edo was the center of power and the shogunal capital, sure, but Kyoto was still the capital.
Some of the most famous tayû were from Kyoto like Yoshino 吉野太夫 and Yûgiri 夕霧太夫 who are part of the three most famous with Takao 高尾太夫 from Edo that you mention.
Even nowadays there are women in Kyoto maintaining the artistic aspects of their traditions.
Just found this channel and man I love it, the art style and the history one more sub
Idk why but feel like I'm able to watch 2h of you story telling and not get tired
Speaking of Katrina 🌀, New Orleans red light 🚦 district was called Storyville 😜
Also, Storyville was the place that helped develop Jazz 🎺
Evening from the U.K and I just come across your post and it's so interesting viewing, thanks for explaining for which sadly Job these youngsters went through and teenagers. I have always been interested in Japanese History and looking at it through a woman's perspective, OMG it must of been tough, ❤
In the silent movie SF classic METROPOLIS (1927), there is a Yoshiwara Club.
I really want a place where I can go to drink tea and learn about history and culture, that sounds amazing!
It does sound pretty cool :p
This is very interesting. Thank you so much for the video!
And today we see those modern district in cities in which most of the women were college students who'm their parent's money are not enough for their college fees. 😢
"These bath houses operated all over the capital city, which meant they were illegal" sent me lol
I love these videos. Informative and interesting
Amazing stuff as always, your narration keeps me amused and I remember the info too. Are you perhaps a geisha? 😊
Perhaps 🤔
@@Linfamy I knew it, you're. Kitsune geisha 😲😎

Oh shit I fit all of the requirements for a Tayū and I'm a guy... well atleast I have severe ADHD so my eyes dart around constantly for no good reason whatsoever so that's gotta deduct some points right
edit: nevermind they would have to teach me not to cuss and I'm irish so that's something no God can pull off let alone a mere mortal being
Informative and funny 👍 im definitely hitting that subscribe button
12/10 would shoot the shit over oolong for hours with ya
(Also fascinating that Soaplands existed even way back when. Love the Teahouse-Hostess connection, too. :0 )
THANK YOU!!!!
EXCELLENT WORK!
7:49. This sounds like the work of the girl in Spirited Away (well without the weird stuff)
I need more video like this but about samurai/priestess ranking🥺 this helps me alot to understand japanese culture
Gosh, you make my day 😂
Been loving your weirdness since i found your channel.
You're Viet? Why not another channel on Vietnamese history and cultural eccentricities? Easy to say but i can imagine it's a lot of work. I'd definitely sub
AMAZING
I just read about it. Thanks for the video
In the words of Tyrion Lanister: "Wars have been started for less".
"Women Prisoners" is exactly what came to my mind when I first saw the women sitting behind the dividers. Products to showcase not human beings. It's really unfortunate.
i love learning about these sm
I’m such a little historian …watching videos about Japanese history when I have school work on the American revolution 😭

“Boob, bath and beyond” made me laugh SOOOO incredibly hard omg
Sancha literally sound like ye old maid café
8:58 Dang! So Bleach Japan was real and all a front to get a monopoly. I was playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon and this gives a lot of context on why the brothels were bath houses or "soaplands". I merely thought it was a euphemism for brothels, but it turns out they are both actually bathhouses and brothels.
Holy shit, does the kamuro in Kamurocho, from the Ryu Ga Gotoku games, come from the same word/kanji? If so, that's wild!
I guess so, it was inspired by kabukicho by the way
Why doesnt this man have more subs
Um, why does the caption option for English say 'I love you'? Great video btw.
❤️
Great video
Great comment!
I feel called out by Lin saying that if drinking tea and talking about history and culture is your thing he loves you. I would be the kind of oddball to ask every weird question about culture the human mind could concieve of
I heard that tying your obi in the front isn’t a guaranteed tell for a prostitute. It was a fashion thing. Nuns and even some noblewomen also tied their obis in the front.
That’s interesting there’s more tayu in Kyoto now (2) than Edo in the 19th century.
i wpuld love those tea houses
HE POSTED !!!!!
I also love you Linfamy, you are my favorite Vietnamese
Although I don't really talk about history, I LOVE learning about history
I love you too, subtitle guy
😉
I could only imagine a Geisha playing something to the tune of Neon Blade. Man thad be rockin
