I was so confused by the "10 years" because I knew I seen the movie as a child. I even remember seeing that Pokémon episode where the cruise ship is turned over by a wave and the main characters are trapped and have to escape the upside-down ship, and I always thought that episode was based on the Poseidon, so it wouldn't make any sense if it was only 10 years old. I was almost ready to claim Mandela Effect.
Oh I know that now. I made that comment after I realised they based it off a remake. Which is why I said "was" and "almost". I guess I didn't make it that clear though.

Tsunamis only happen close to land, the wave that hit the poseidon in this movie was a rogue wave, unlike the novel where the boat was hit by a wave caused by an underwater earthquake.

They also made a follow up movie Staring Michael Caine, Peter Boyle, and Sally Field called Beyond The Poseidon Adventure, which was about a small salvage crew coming across the overturned ship and going abored to see what could be saved. It begins about the same time the Preacher and Mr. Rowan's group is rescued, and ends with the ship sinking.
Interestingly the book had Rogo (that’s it rather than Rowan) Manny Rosén and James Martin returning because Rogo made the chopper turn around. Similar plot but it’s gold and not plutonium they want and Manny dies.

I remember the movie. It's crazy how that sudden unavoidable tsunami knocked the whole ship down and literally ruined everyone's New Year party.
