Fun fact: one of the survivors of this disaster was Manny Rosen, who just so happened to also be one of the only two survivors of the London Chocolate Factory disaster just a year earlier.

This reminds me of another disaster that was widely covered. A charter boat taking a three hour tour near Hawaii which encountered rough weather and was tossed. Thankfully, the crew were fearless and courageous otherwise that ship would've been lost. Thanks for another great video. Happy AFD!
You must be speaking of the castaways that included the first mate, the skipper too, a millionaire and his wife. a movie star... and the rest. (I think it was a professor and some farm girl named Mary-Ann.)

Bravo! I was on the SS Poseidon in 1972. As long as I live, I'll never forget that harrowing experience. As a survivor, I can tell you it was 1 hour and 57 minutes of sheer hell! I'll never forget it. Thank you for recounting every excruciating moment of that horrific night so vividly.
The way you weave tongue-in-cheek references to this being a film but still have it make sense within the context of your channel and what you usually do is utterly sublime. Very enjoyable 🙂
I facepalmed at myself after I read your comment, because I forgot the Poseidon wasn’t real lol. Totally forgot about the Fascinating Horror annual April fools day joke. Hope you have a wonderful day :)
The SS Posideon haunts all who remember her to this day. Her siren song never leaves us. Through the ocean mists she reminds us, throughout our lives, that "there's got to be a morning after"
This is true. I watched it the first time together with my mom when I was 12. I can t count how much more since then. That siren and the ballroom scene has haunted me ever since.
Film footage taken during those fateful New Year events on SS Poseidon in '72 and '73 were licensed to be included in the video for a popular music song in 1996 by the musicians who named themselves Klubbheads, as a tribute to the unfortunate souls who tragically lost their lives.
The best thing about this video for me is that I temporarily forgot the date when I started watching, and so for a long time I was thinking, "Wow, that old 70s movie was actually based on real events? Amazing!" Right up until you said the line about it being a very "cinematic" adventure. I don't always enjoy being tricked on this day, but I enjoyed being tricked this time.
@@Norfnorf12I was like, "Oh wow, the movie was _really_ based on a true story?!" ... then Gene Hackman made an appearance. FH got me bad this year! That'll teach me to pay better attention to dates! 🤣

Totally fooled me 😅 I’ve never seen the movie, so here I was thinking “Omg, it happened 3 times? That’s wild!” Literally had to go to the comments and finally saw the quotes around “documentary” 😂 Well done!
My first thought after reading the headline was, "Wait. I thought that was fiction." I remember I had just turned 4 when it was on TV, and my mom had to watch it. That was in 1974. So, when he said that it occurred in 1972, my next thought was, "It sank in 1972? How did they make the movie so fast? . . . . . . . . Oh wait... Is this a joke?" 😄😆😆
@@carolinematusevich889 I turned down a good paying job of Cruise Director. I love the sea but I hate the pollution that Cruise ship cause in the oceans, dumping their waste into the ocean. President Kennedy had a ship on his desk -- plake read: ' The ocean is so big & my ship is so small. '
😂😂. Gene Hackman was awesome in this roll. The implication if going to hell when he died falling into the fire made me laugh because he saved most of those people but spoke out against the church and did things his way. 😂
I’m so glad you covered the other 2 similar “incidences” in 2005 and 2006. You would think the builders of those ships knew they were doomed to fail. It was so obvious.
It’s to the Captain’s eternal credit that he was able to suppress his well known slapstick tendencies long enough to implement all the safety measures he could in the time available, especially after surviving a tricky space mission nearly twenty years earlier. Surely, he deserves a posthumous medal.
Dammit, it's not fair! Captain Harrison had spent his entire career working on his skill of holding his breath for a LOOOONNNNGGGG time, but it just wasn't long enough!
This was brilliant. XD I love all the little references you made to the unbelievability of the situation, as well as the mention of the poorly-received 'sequel ships.' It's actually quite interesting to see a fictional event like this covered in a realistic manner, as if it actually happened.
My great aunt and uncle, the Muldoons, were supposed to take their honeymoon on the Poseidon but they arrived in New York late and missed it. Ended up going to Amity Island instead, where they got to experience one of its last few tourist seasons before all the shark attacks happened. We lost great uncle Rob about 30 years ago at that Isla Nublar park, unfortunately.
Glad I'm not the only one! 😂 I rarely get tricked so this was like when you hysterically laugh at a jump scare! Prayers you have a very happy rest of your week! ✌️
It’s one of my faves and it didn’t even click for me except for when I went to watch this weeks and saw another one thinking I’d missed last weeks. I realised a minute in though and was so excited!
I literally started cackling as soon as I saw the thumbnail and I didn’t stop throughout the entire video. This was utterly hilarious. Your deadpan, tongue in cheek delivery was brilliant. I always look forward to your regular videos, but your April 1st videos are next level.
I can remember the TV coverage of this disaster when I was a child. I was excited and frightened at the same time, the video documentation was so... vivid and realistic. At least for the time. Thanks for bringing the memories back and for treating the incident with the respect it deserves!
This is one of my very favourite lesser known disasters. Surprisingly, one of the survivors of this disaster also survived the great Chocolate Factory Disappearances in 1971. A lucky man indeed!! P.s. I absolutely adore the slight change in voice tone in these vids. They are still brilliantly done but you can hear the smile and silent chuckle in the words, especially when he’s dropping hints as to what is really happening (or not so really happening)!
My grandparents were so upset to miss the boarding of the Poseidon. They later heard how lucky they were. A few years later they were thrilled to be invited to the dedication party for the beautiful, new Glass Tower in San Francisco. Unfortunately, they were on time for that event.
Thank you for taking the time to cover this tragedy so respectfully. It’s this that sets your channel apart from all others. The fact that the Captain was overruled with regards to ballast was absolutely criminal, hopefully justice will eventually be served…
I'm embarrassed to say that I did fall for this for a minute or two. The thought did cross my mind that "The Poseidon Adventure was based on a real tragedy?", how did I never hear about this? It's superb how a matter of fact delivery can give some sense of reality to even the preposterous. Very well done, this is one of the better April Fools I've seen.
Yeah, same here. I heard of the movie but never seen it, so I was wondering the same thing. I didn't twig until the mention of the little boy with bizarre knowledge of the ship's layout!
Great stuff! One of the best lines in the film was from the character played by Roy Kinnear when addressing the passengers before the New Year’s Eve party. “Let’s make this a night to remember”. One for fans of the British movie about Titanic starring Kenneth Moore.
The start of my love of disaster movies! Earthquake, Meteor, Posidon. Wasn't allowed to watch Towering Inferno til I was grown because I've always had a fear of being trapped in a burning building. Must be from a past life, LOL.
One thing about the Poseidon disaster that haunts me to this day is the dude who was desperately trying to hold onto the table but sadly lost his grip and fell down into the light fixture causing it to explode. Oh the humanities.
My great-aunt Fergie was a victim in the 2006 accident. After so many ships of the same name kept sinking, you'd think there would have been greater caution to repeat history. Thank you for such indepth and consideration when covering these tragedies as always 🙏🏻
I remember being at the movie theater eating popcorn when first hearing about this tragedy. With so many B-tier Hollywood stars in jeopardy, there was an audible gasp from the audience.
I don't think Hackman, as he was in 1972/1973, would be considered "B-tier." Hackman was already a celebrated actor, riding high after winning an Oscar for Best Actor for his legendary performance as Popeye Doyle in "The French Connection." On a personal note, I believe both Hackman and Borgnine (himself a prior Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe winner) were robbed of Academy Award and/or Golden Globe nominations for "The Poseidon Adventure." Borgnine, Red Buttons, and two-time Oscar winner Shelley Winters were certainly B-tier at this point in their careers, and the rest of the cast--pre-"Airplane" Leslie Nielsen included--likely occupied lower tiers. **And remember: Always load enough ballast. You never know when your boating excursion could turn into an episode of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea."** 😂 For those who've never seen "The Poseidon Adventure," please see the following: ruclips.net/video/r_9PgiNuwDc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/aNOmTuwnGYg/видео.html
I'd pay $20 to see a lot of B, C & D list actors put in 'jeopardy' today. Half the A list ones, too. I suppose, today, the jeopardy would be the Botox supply running out.
The '72 movie was mostly big stars actually, looking at the two remakes it looks like even the low-budget 2005 remake had some pretty well-known actors involved, albeit perhaps "has-beens."
Those were far from B list stars. Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Gene Hackman, Jack Albertson and Ernest Borgnine had all won academy awards for earlier work. The director had been nominated 3 times earlier
I love it when they do this. And there are so many disaster movies to choose from. Would be funny if they did a disaster documentary spoof of "Airplane," which itself was a spoof.
Remember that paradise island and its dormant volcano that became volatile in the late 70s or early 80s? An earthquake and a tsunami destroyed everything. Just a small number of survivors made it to safety.
I genuinely looked forward to this video this year, probably the most fun April Fool's gag I know of. It's hard to believe I've been watching three years of fascinating horror!
His gags are the best. I was thinking earlier how April Fool’s is just not my thing because I hate startles and hate being tricked… but these are a delight.

Every time you get the balance perfectly between knowing winks to camera and your normal script. It's so satisfying as a fan to see how you have such a defined voice that it works here too! So happy that the channel is doing so well for you.
Well done! When I saw Leslie Nielsen, I simply thought you were using him to illustrate a point. Then it began to dawn on me where this was going, ultimately confirmed by Gene Hackman. Extremely well written 👍
Some may not realize that before the documentary "The Poseidon Adventure" was filmed, Paul Gallico researched the event and recorded it in book form. I believe Mr. Gallico's version of the catastrophe is more detailed than the film version. And it has some striking differences from the film, the greatest one being (spoiler alert)... that the people who elected to remain in the ballroom survived and were rescued without enduring all the hardships of the group who chose to climb to the ship's hull. This ironic twist hit me hard when I read it.
And he got the idea from a true story about the time The Queen Mary was hit by a freak wave and rolled so far that she almost capsized, experts say that just a few more degrees and she would have gone over.
After last years' Isla Nubla Incident, I was looking forward to what you might come up with this year, as always beautifully narrated. Have a good April
My uncle Mike was one of the survivors but his wife didn’t make it. He was a cop in New York City. He never said much about it, only that, “That Goddamn tub ruined a good thing.” Thank you for this documentary. I had no idea he went through this. No wonder he was so angry all the time.
I remember seeing bits of the film when I was a kid. It totally freaked me out. In particular, I saw the part with the woman who held her breath to ho under water. I didn't realize it was based on a true occurrence. I thought it was just one of many disaster movies that were popular at the time. Edit, I just realized it's April Fools Day. You got me!
This might be the best April 1 video so far. Plot points were so well woven into the narrative (the deaths among the major cast, the unlikely stop for food, Belle's underwater swimming skill come to mind).
You absolutely should have another channel in which you do other 'cinematic tragedies' in this manner. The delivery, the seriousness, and the follow-up that only you can do, but applied to "less serious" disasters... I'd watch as much as this channel.
I have to say - you totally “got me”. :( I loved that movie when I first saw it. When i saw your video I thought “wow, it was based on a true story?!?” I even told my history buff son about it. When he seemed “skeptical, I came back to read the comments & realized what day it was. I hate April 1st. 😂
@@pfridell8424 It sort of is. During the second world war, the RMS Queen Mary, then a troop transport vessel, was struck by a rouge wave while carrying troops across the Atlantic. She listed over 52 degrees to her starboard side before she righted herself up again.
It was kinda based on a real event. RMS Queen Mary (the other ship mentioned in the video) was used as a troop ship in WW2 and on one crossing was broadsided b a freak wave. The ship listed to about 52 degrees before managing to right itself

Great video as always. The book this movie was based on was itself inspired by the Queen Mary surviving a hit from a 90 foot rogue wave in the 40s. She listed severely, but didn’t capsize.
I think the Queen Mary is in worse danger in recent years than she ever was when she sailed the seas. Queens are very expensive to maintain, or so her recent owners have learned after years of neglect. Though she just reopened for tours, so maybe there's hope for her.
@@annleung8878 The movie was based on a book by Paul Gallico, The Poseidon Adventure. I never saw the movie, but I read the book. I checked the book out of the library, so guess which section the library shelved it in. The Queen Mary, on the other hand, is real. She is permanently berthed in Long Beach, California. Though no doubt there is a lot of fiction about her. I have been on board her on a few occasions.
@@EXROBOWIDOW Well there are a lot of fictional ghost stories about her. And Paul Gallico himself said that the book was based on the time that the QM was hit by a rouge wave and almost capsized. Experts say that she was about 5 degrees from going over.

I saw an interview with survivor Susan Shelby, and she said that she kept singing "There's got to be a morning after..." to herself to keep her spirits up as she, her little brother, and the other survivors made their way to the hull.
After the disaster, I think she worked her way through school as a teen detective, but don't hold me to that. She then moved to Denver and married into the wealthy Colby family, and is now a powerful force in that dynasty. Nice to know that this horrible event didn't mar her life....
@@johnmadden2814 It took me a brief moment to get the point of your comment, which made it all the funnier for me. Oddly, the Susan Shelby in the novel might have wished for what you were referring to.
You need to cover another forgotten maritime disaster that happened about 8 years prior. Outside of Honolulu Hawaii, the small charter boat SS Minnow, with seven souls on board, went missing somewhere in the Pacific Ocean after encountering a typhoon. To this day, nobody knows what happened to the crew and passengers as this tragedy was quietly swept under the rug.
I've read there were a ton of reports from travelers in that area claiming to have encountered the _Minnow_ survivors on a nearby island, but inexplicably, none of those reports indicated the castaways even wished to leave.
Sherwood Schwartz said that at the time of Gilligan's Island airing, the US Coast Guards received a number of letters from citizens imploring them to go and find those poor castaways.
Beautifully done, with your usual respectful, sensitive delivery. You sounded so broken up when describing the last few casualties, God rest their souls. Please, please tell me there was a morning after. There’s got to be! I’ve been looking forward to this. I knew you wouldn’t let us down!

It took me longer on this one to realize what you were doing than on the one with Jaws though. Thank you so much for all of the time and effort you put into these!
I, too, was puzzling about the box office. I was thinking to myself, "Wait-- do these cruise ships book through box offices? Is that what they call the place you buy cruise tickets?"
I'm so ashamed, I've seen multiple poseidon movies and it still took me until he said box office to realise 😆 I'm going to put it down to me watching it at 5am before my coffee on April 12!
The documentary of the attempted scavenging of the Poseidon is available on RUclips movies as “Beyond the Poseidon Adventure”. Amazing how they tried to cash in on such tragedy.
You didn't fool me for more than a moment, being old enough to remember seeing the movie in the theater before Christmas in 1972, before your version took place! As I was puzzling out the date, you mentioned the captain and flashed Leslie Nielsen's photo up. And then it hit me that I was watching a day late and it was from April 1st! Well done!
To be fair, they did a remake not that long ago So someone doesn't need to have been alive in the 70s to get the joke But using footage from that version would have been too obvious
@@Kuypers125 I never said anyone had to be alive in the 70s to get the joke. 🙄 I was merely relating my own experience. I knew they did a remake and I could never figure out why as it was a pretty bad movie first time out.

I'm sorry for you that you have become one of those people. Be better.
Very good! Sly, witty retelling of one of the most terrifying maritime disasters to have never happened. Amazing, mostly unbelievable story of human endurance and survival instinct that is testament to mankind's primal need to fantasize. Starkly contrasting the depths of courage and bravery against the vastness of stupidity, it is a tale of man's potential for greatness that's as fictitious as the ship it plays out on. Great satire, presented seriously, with tongue lodged firmly-in-cheek, as well as surpringly accurate critique of the source material. This is how it feels to laugh in the face of disaster!
There must have been more survivors to this tragedy. I distinctly recall a man looking very much as captain Harrison serving as a police officer in the late 80s.
Well done! I was 14 when I saw it in the theater. The special effects were actually very good for that time and "all star casts" were a big thing as well.

When this movie first premiered in theaters back in the 70s my grandma went to see it at the local theater and in the theater lobby they had an upside down Christmas tree as part of a display advertising the movie.
Poseidon was always doomed with aging Captain Magoo in command. He watched in morbid facination for several minutes as the gigantic wave closed in from the side of the ship. The helmsman then failed to respond as he awaited the "Hard a port!!" Command when all that came was "Turn left!!" A tragic comedy of errors..

Like when I mentioned the movie should be shown on Cruise Ships as a TRAINING FILM.
My first thought after reading the headline was, "Wait. I thought that was fiction." I remember I had just turned 4 when it was on TV, and my mom had to watch it. That was in 1974.

I’m so glad you covered the other 2 similar “incidences” in 2005 and 2006. You would think the builders of those ships knew they were doomed to fail. It was so obvious.
Maybe it's not a good idea to name ships those Poseidon, as that name is cursed.
It’s to the Captain’s eternal credit that he was able to suppress his well known slapstick tendencies long enough to implement all the safety measures he could in the time available, especially after surviving a tricky space mission nearly twenty years earlier.
My grandparents were so upset to miss the boarding of the Poseidon. They later heard how lucky they were. A few years later they were thrilled to be invited to the dedication party for the beautiful, new Glass Tower in San Francisco. Unfortunately, they were on time for that event.

Great stuff! One of the best lines in the film was from the character played by Roy Kinnear when addressing the passengers before the New Year’s Eve party. “Let’s make this a night to remember”. One for fans of the British movie about Titanic starring Kenneth Moore.
Roy Kinnear was also in "Juggernaut" a few years later, as Richard Lester always found a part for him.

You never know when your boating excursion could turn into an episode of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea."** 😂

I want to hear FH read the roll call of their names.
Two of the passengers were never identified, so officials just referred to them as "the rest."

I remember seeing a movie about this disaster as a teenager. That must have been about 1973. It’s amazing they were able to produce it so quickly !
Well done!
To be fair, they did a remake not that long ago
So someone doesn't need to have been alive in the 70s to get the joke
But using footage from that version would have been too obvious
@@Kuypers125
I never said anyone had to be alive in the 70s to get the joke. 🙄 I was merely relating my own experience. I knew they did a remake and I could never figure out why as it was a pretty bad movie first time out.
@@Lucinda_Jackson
And I never said you did
Unclench
@@Kuypers125
Seems like you're the one who's overwrought and needs to unclench. You absolutely did say that. 🙄 The world is suddenly so full of people who smugly fire off nonsense "gotchas" at people then stand back and blink with wide-eyed innocence as they proclaim, "But I didn't say that" when someone answers back. I'm sorry for you that you have become one of those people. Be better.

"Surely you can't be serious?!"
Ah yes. Quality April Fools content - The Poseidon Adventure!
Of course. Lol. Like for a couple mins I thought wow what a coincidence just like in the movie haha
Don't explain the joke!
Ah shit, now I have to be super cautious about everything again
I was trying to figure this out!!😂 Oh they got me!! I love it!
@@Argumemnon Even after reading this comment it took me 5 minutes of watching the video to figure it out
There must have been more survivors to this tragedy. I distinctly recall a man looking very much as captain Harrison serving as a police officer in the late 80s.
That was his twin brother.
Surely you can’t be serious
@@badsneakers917
I'm serious....and dont call me shirley
And before that a doctor onboard an Airplane! I hope to see a documentary on that near disaster.
It is rumored that he was actually a vampire that loved being dead.
I went into this knowing what it was but I’m still laughing at how well you committed to it. Well done sir
I can't imagine how many takes it took for you to narrate this without cracking up.
Well done! I was 14 when I saw it in the theater. The special effects were actually very good for that time and "all star casts" were a big thing as well.
Like Airport!!
Oh, yeah, all star disaster movies were big viewing when I was little. Kinda messed up family viewing in retrospect but when you have a bunch of older brothers, what can you do?
I literally squeed when I saw this on my notifications. I love this content. Those poor people. The movie they made afterward is also one of my favorite movies. I remember seeing on tv in 90s as a kid and being fascinated. It probably was one of the reasons I'm so interested in researching disasters.
Well done! I love all your videos, but every year there's one extraordinary video that makes a special day complete.
BRILLIANT!!!
I saw the move in 1973 as a 14 year old and it totally blew me away. Not only was i completely hypnotized by John Wlliams' score but a tightwad like myself actualy paid to see it THREE TIMES that year.
now that last is a sign of how impressed i was.
to make a "documenary" of it was very clever
Well done! Equal in quality to your documentary about the boat that was attacked by the giant shark. Bravo!
The survivors being saved by a young boy who learned a lot about the ship sounds like something straight out of a 90’s movie
"Hey Sis. Did you know that the ship's generators make enough power to light up Toledo Ohio?" - From the Mad Magazine documentary on this same tragedy.
70s movie, actually..
@@utubewatcher806 well, the movie was quite ahead of its time afterall.
Don't you mean a young girl, with no weapons and no training?
Yeah, sou😢just like something out of a movie made around 1972, or so….. lol. Loved the original one, the sequel was subpar.
I remember hearing about one of the similar disasters in the mid-2000s. So crazy that this kind of accident happened in such a similar way multiple times throughout history...
What are the odds, right? Each time the footage was better quality as well.
Those that don't learn from history and have no new ides are doomed to repeat it and repeat it.
@@dmclegg66 Mark Twain once said that “History never repeats itself, but it does often rhyme.”
Seems 'Poseidon' is just as unlucky a ship name as 'Waratah' is.
@@jenniferbrewer5370 Poseidon is a combination of the Eastland and the Queen Mary 1942 rogue wave.
I never really cared for April fools before finding this channel, now I look forward to the day!! Thank you for a another wonderful video, I love this gag
Ah this particular disaster, (along with the huge tower block fire two years later) has always been one of my favourite to revisit over the years. It fascinated me as a child and I think it's why I am so interested in other disasters and tragedies now as an adult. Well done FH for another riveting coverage.
The tower block fire had a counterpart in a hotel fire in India, where hundreds of people were saved by the ingenuity of three hotel waiters, who were nicknamed by the press "The Three Musketeers".
Ah yes, that fire, I remember seeing a documentary about it. A towering inferno the survivors called it.
Excellent and very witty!
I actually love this old movie, recently bought a cheap blu ray off eBay and thoroughly enjoyed rewatching the fun story, the impressive film sets (no CGI!), the generally good acting ensemble and the superb restoration.
Great value entertainment and glad I’ve never seen the “sequel/remakes”
