Just picked up my Dune rooftop tent yesterday thanks to your review! I can confirm that the newer versions door opens from the top so now possible to get in without completely unzipping the whole door
Hey Bro, Just gotta say your vids are the best touring set up vids out. Completely honest and unbiased, aswell as well spoken and easy to follow. In all honest ive gotten a lot of if not almost of my inspiration for my 4x4 set up from you. Built for comfort and ease as opposed to rough and tough off road. As a local WA lad myself its great to see a local young falla like yourself giving good AF advice. I have actually purchased a dune 4x4 RTT today beause of your reviews (the 1.4m wide over the 1.2m like yourself thou). I just have to say keep up the good work and vid making your presentation of your videos is a nice change from the commercialised BS on youtube, you present yourself and channel very well and are clear in your aproach and production. i hope to meet you out on road one day to exchange ideas and furter inspo. You seem like a genuine GC keep it up my guy.
I have one, had a kings quick up tent before but that lasted only 6 months it started cracking got my money back and got one of these had this about six months now and love it I think it’s one of the best rooftop tents on the market and the price fantastic $940 paid for mine
That's good feedback, especially regarding the Grand Tourer - it looks like an impressive hard-shell for the price but good to know the Dune is still more comfortable.
What's the comfort issues with the kings grand tourer? Is it just the mattress as I would be looking at swapping in a self inflating mattress like an exped or zempire
Nick Bertram rear of the swag has a window / vent at the back end and a storm flap. Useless in the night when it’s raining and you need to pish.. Solution is a light fly over the top or sleep under the car awning...
You've convinced me to buy this over the kings rooftop tents, thanks for the great review, i love it and did it with leaving the bedding inside too which is wat i plan on doing too :-)
@Nick Bertram it rained the second time i used it, kepted the rain out, ended up raining alot more then it was supposed to as i was camped at frying pan creek, it did good I'm very happy as it's the perfect size for my lil Suzuki so a kings rooftop tent would have looked ridiculous. I did get a lil rain built up on the top so when i pulled it down the water landed on me haha but now i know it builds up a lil i will prepare myself more next time. I'll be using my at least once a month but have already used it twice. I ended up having to put it back up at home after the second time to dry it out but it dryed out so quick. The 1st time i used it was on a mountain top we had lots of wind, again it did so well and i got a camp line and peg to help with the wind flapping the fly around. Highly recommend them and perfect for women i can set up and pack up completely on my own i wouldn't be able to do that with any other, happy woman right here lol
Thanks for doing a proper review of this... my dodgy one didn't do the tent justice. On longer trips, I like putting in an extra mattress... But otherwise. You are spot-on for everything. Happy adventuring.
I saw your review ages ago and it helped me to choose this tent just after you posted I had been eyeing it for a while and your video helped me to pull the trigger over other options Happy as with mine so far Cheers to both of you for the videos
Ive got the XTM manual version, same tent just different in some ways, no strut. I can't fault it and its dry and yes can handle very windy days and nights, had it for 3.5 years going strong.
I have a super cheap one over 2 yrs now. It’s automatic. Travelled with my 2 sons all over the country with it. Great for quick over ngt stops free camping or if mummy’s has too many drinks at friends we just sleep on the roof. Everyone loves to watch it open and close! I had to get a step peg to get up on the sides for the cover to get over my other stuff I pack in there. Massage tables, camping gear the lot. We also have a elec blanket that plugs into the ark pak and installation under mattress and between roof and fly. For winter we went to Tassie last yr didn’t freeze like so many others sleeping in those roof tops like the Quik hard cover ones or worse just in hire vans.
Thanks Mitch! I can't say for sure regarding the mounting rails, they are intended to run length ways but they are removeable so you could perhaps customise them to mount width ways, hard to say for sure though if this will affect the strength of the frame.
Hey mate, I know exactly what you mean! In overly windy situations I usually run a strap from the outer most point of the awning to the ground to hold the fabric tight, I show this in this video at the 0:28: ruclips.net/video/ep04Ko2BRro/видео.html
Great and honest review, well done. Just a quick question, Do you need to mount the tent to a roof rack or are roof bars satisfactory ? I’m planning on mounting this tent on a spare trailer, just contemplating what mods may be necessary
Thanks for the review. Looks like a reasonably good tent for the price. Just wondering if dust or water gets in under the cover as it doesn't look like it seals that well. Thanks again Mick
Hi Mick, good question. I've driven through heavy rain many times and the tent has always been totally dry inside when setup afterwards and I've never experienced dust ingress, however I'm yet to test it out up north where the real dust is haha - will report back here if I ever have an issue in that area!
Excellent review mate. Was wanting to mount my rooftop tent across 3 crossbars like you've done, was just wondering if the tent came with enough mounting brackets x6? Or did it only come with x4 for 2 cross bars only?
Thanks mate! The mounting kit only includes 4x brackets and the adjustable mounting rails on the underside of the tent that the brackets bolt to are only about 1.5m long - they’re intended to go in the middle however I adjusted them all the way to the front to allow me to mount the tent to the front two roof racks/rails (it’s not fixed at all to the third, most rear rail which hasn’t been an issue so far, but has been on the list to sort out). Hope that helps!
Thanks mate! Yep sure have, I recently did a weekend trip up to Sandy Cape with the kayak on top (the trip mini-series is up on my channel if you’re interested). Didn’t have any issues storing the kayak up there and I imagine a gazebo would be similar 👍
Hey mate! Do you park ur car outside, if so is the cover fully waterproof? Has the cover faded from the sun? I’m considering getting a waterproof and anti fade spray.
During the week it's left in the garage at home, I only drop the canopy on when I head away on camping trips so can't speak to how well the cover will hold up to long-term sun exposure I'm afraid!
Hey mate, I watched both part 1 and 2 of your videos and I loved them! I got a big question for you.. I own a 120 series Prado and I'm thinking about buying the Dune rooftop tent but the only size they sell atm is the 140 (which is 154 outer widemeasurements). Would you think it'd be too wide and stick out too much over the sides?
Hi mate, glad you liked both the vids! How wide is the roof of the Prado? I think a 10cm overhang looks fine (5cm each side), but more than that can be pushing it. That being said, I’m sure you’d appreciate the extra room on the 140 so it can be worth it even if the overhang is extreme, just depends how much use you’ll get from it 🙂
Yeah I’ve got mine on two! Had to move mine close together to hit the right points on the underside of the tent. Think they’re about 1m apart from memory
Hi mate, I'm looking into getting one of these but first need cross bars installed on my canopy. Just wondering what width they should be apart to work?
Hey mate, the mounts slide on rails so they can be adjustable to suit most roof rack spacings, so you should be right with whatever you go with. Ideally I'd say if it was only sitting across 2 racks you'd want to space them by about 1m.
Hey mate, haven't had any dramas with mine at all. It's held up great in very heavy rain and because it's smaller than most RTTs, it actaully warms up really quick - 5 minutes up there even in the coldest nights and I'm ready to throw the doona off haha.
Nice and very useful video. I've been thinking about it for a while. Covid was a big consideration. Getting old! I'm convinced now! Got a nice little 6X4 fully enclosed trailer that will suit it fine! Thank you!
Hi mate, I haven't had any troubles with dust as yet, although I haven't had a chance to properly test it out up north yet - I'll post back here should I encounter any troubles with that down the track.

If its raining like proper rain in winter, and ur packing away and all ur bedding is inside it, wouldnt it get soaked between folding the tent flat and refitting the black cover? As the enterance door is face straight up to the sky when the tent is folded flat.
Yeah folding it up using this method is kind of best case scenario. During rain I’d probably keep the door zipped closed and just pull the tent closed really slowly/gently.
Hey mate, great question!! I was worried about this exact thing a few weeks back on a rainy weekend camping trip - pleased to report that with fairly heavy rain and medium winds there was no water ingress whatsoever. I'll be sure to add to this comment if I ever have any issues in future :)
Just thinking for me i think the fact that the doorway/entry is fixed across the bottom instead of at the top. So getting in & out through the night you'd have to drag the door inwards and crawl over it to get out, or otherwise its going to fall down over the ladder. And that has just turned me right off buying one.
