So Samsung actually used ultra thin glass(30µm=30micro meters(how thin the layer is)) but covering a glass layer with protective film(PET film) which is plastic. Supposing glass layer exposing it might be strong from scratches but when impacted hard it breaks(maybe they wanted to prevent that) And to add additional info, usual type of glass we use in phones are 500µm(=500micro meters) or more thicker. Now compare 500µm to 30µm, it should be called ultra ultra ultra thin glass. And that’s why it could be flexible enough to fold. Funny thing is the size of our hair is 50µm(=50micro meters)

Since it's so thin, hardness is comprimised and when you put a glass so thin that bends on the very top of the screen, it's more likely to break easily than putting the glass under a plastic layer.
