    its worth remembering that English naval sailors started putting a sugar syrup on thier tobacco to preserve it's moissture on long sea voygers. This started to move to casing with other addatives to the sugar syrup (orriginally honey to add to or replace some or the sugars, and over time other sweet/aromatic addatives in cluding things like black pepper, port and liquor ). So this goes back a long way.

    As a father of 5, I naturally prefer to smoke distinctly aromatic blends (prefer Sutliff). I like relaxing while I smoke, and there’s not much relaxing if 6 people are glaring at you 😂

    I used to smoke aromatic pipe tobacco. I would mix for example vanilla and chocolate super value. I got good complements when I smoked it a a put door venue. I quit because I was also smoking little cigars which caused me to wheeze at night. I still have my pipes and I have made different unique pipes. I will.probably start up again when I am 70 years old and will tell people to piss off if they don't like it.

    Excellent video, thanks for the perspective 👍
    Some old timers claim that aromatics are typically Cavendish based blends, from Burley or red Virginias and can have no or even heavy topping. Often blended with fragrant Orientals, sweet or yellow Virginias, flue cured virginias and dark fired kentuckys. These time honored aromatic blends are often mocked in a dismissive tone by pipe aficionado-wanna-bees and pseudo-intellectuals.

    Ok. But when I quit smoking American tobacco and smoked English blends that's when really enjoyed pipe smoking. It was over 40 years of off and on. When I found something other than aromatics I really loved my pipe smoking. By the way I love Spurgeon. And also to note auto spelling had no idea who he was. Oooof.

    As I learn and grow my knowledge and particular tastes for different types of tobacco, I find I'm moving away from true aromatics. I still enjoy them from time to time, especially because I enjoy my churchwarden pipe collection so much, but I find my everyday smoke of choice is English blends and my new favorite (thanks to Spurgeon and Carolina Pipe Cottage) Peterson Early Morning. Thanks again to you and the community at large for being so helpful and friendly, what a great group I find myself in.

    I enjoy aromatics. I started with OTC aromatics but eventually I felt like there’s something more out there, So I was put on an English blend , but I discovered that I’m not a huge fan of Latakia. Now I feel I’m more at peace with aromatic blends and it’s my comfort zone. Captain Black Royal is my go to every day smoke with Velvet as my secondary.

    I’ve just started my journey in pipe smoking a few years back. My father smoked a pipe for a while, and I had fond memories of that. I like the aromatic tobaccos, but I have heard they’re prone to tongue bite which I hate. I’ve been interested in trying something other than aromatics, just haven’t bit the bullet yet.

    I think there shouldn’t be any snobbery when it comes to pipe smoking. As long as it is good, it is good. There is good in all segments. Personally, I like Limited Lane 1-Q because it reminds me of bonfires and smores when I was a kid. I may mix it with sutliff chocolate mousse to enhance that smores taste. I think blending can be fun and enjoyable.

    One thing to remember when choosing an aromatic is to purchase from a reputable source that uses only a superior blend of tobaccos. I say that because a number of the bargain blends may use the flavoring to mask what the tobacco itself tastes like. Their flavorings can burn off in a matter of minutes leaving a harsh undesirable smoke. Choosing a reputable source will not do this, you’ll enjoy the additive and tobacco blend throughout the smoke. An excellent example is Cult’s Blood Red Moon… they use a very good tobacco blend along with an additive that lasts the entire bowl. Of course there are others as well, just mentioned Cult as an example.

    I agree on your definition for aromatics, but it stays controversial. Like an English blend used to be a ‘pure’ tobacco blend due to English purity laws. Nothing to do with Latakia.

    QUESTION??? What else can I smoke in my pipe? I know there are aromatics, but what are they and are they combined with tobacco? Can say mango, orange, peach, be dried and smoked in a pipe without combining with tobacco? If I want to smoke a pipe but don't want to smoke any tobacco what other options are there? THANKS, PS: I am new, and know nothing about pipe smoking.

    • @tcphll
      @tcphll 2 года назад +13

      Some aromatics are cheap, sure, as most drugstore brands are aromatics, which is probably why they have a bad rep. Most aren't stinky (that's the point of an aromatic, they smell good to the people around you). I fail to see what intellect or being an academic has to do with taste in tobacco. Smoke what you like and try not to be a snob about other people's taste.
