  • My friend Peggy Wong sent me a prototype watercolour box that she made recently. It's a cute and compact tin box with 3D printed palettes. She says she's still refining it and has no plans for selling yet.

Hi, Teoh. I just received my palettes from Peggy. I ordered two. They are insanely cute! Would you please suggest some colors for each of my palettes, please? I have a bunch of different brands of paint so brands or pigment numbers would be fine, pretty please!

Thanks for showing us that really nicely made palette! I love the idea of the interchangeable inserts, particularly when one is not using separate pans. Your friend is a very smart person to have thought of this palette.

The most interesting item here is the little snap on mixing area. If it were to fit a standard tin lip (eg, an altoids type box) then she might have a market for all those DIYers who have already got their mini palettes but would like more mixing space. Thank you for the video.

how cute! To make my own pocket palette I bought an inexpansive little eyeshadow palette, emptied out the little wells and filled those with paint. I attach it to my sketchbook using a clip. i find it very compact, it's flat and it fits in my pocket!

Francesca Galanti: I do that also, and I spray paint the outside of the clear lid white, so I have a mixing area. Dollar stores are a great place to find awesome eyeshadow palettes to convert.

There is ways to remove those details in your 3d printing. The ones I know is you can spray them with a plastic spray on it to coat it over the grooves and acetone vaporing for the more experiences to polish the clean. I was just thinking about this yesterday of wishing I had a 3d printer and make my own watercoloring container XD

What a great little tin!! As a side note for anyone making their own tins or have tins where the mixing area has stained, using white butcher block block paper, shiny side up works quite well. It can be cut to size of your tin and can be attached with glue dots or double backed tape. It can be easily wiped off or replaced after use. Hope that helps for anyone making their own tins! Thanks for the videos, always learning something new! 😃

I believe there is a smoother injected 3D-printing method - although very expensive. I've been thinking about making one, however the availability of metal boxes with integrated water containers like Schmincke's 9 half-pan portable box set answers my need.

I don't know why I want to buy this mini-palette. I have the Van Gogh travel set (the older one with the sponge in it), a Koi sketch set, a Winsor & Newton Artist field box watercolor set, and now a Siennelier set. I know I've also got a bijox box somewhere. I don't need another small set! Why do I have so many little cute sets? That's why, they're so cute and eeeny and tiny. Grr.
I also discovered that I have another unopened Van Gogh travel set (with the sponge) and a Cotman pan watercolor set (with 14 colors.) I should sell those on the internet.....

i'm not very experienced with watercolour yet as i only bought my first equipment 2 days ago, where i bought synthetic brushes. so my question is: do you know if the animals whose hair is used for making brushes are usually killed and if so do you know a person/brand that makes natural hair brushes using hair for which no creature was killed or seriously harmed?

I've had great success with Princeton's watercolor synthetic brushes. They even had a fake squirrel hair brush, that's a bit springer than real squirrel, but it still holds water great. It's called the Neptune line. You can find it at any art supply online store.
I really don't know if they kill the animals, but I suspect that they do, because the hairs are removed with the 'root' of the hair. If you could open that silver ferrel of your brush, you'd see the hairs.
