I made something like this 2 years ago but didn't end up liking it. I've realized I like a lot of room to mix colors.
There are cheap ($10-20) empty palettes on Amazon and the koi set is awesome with mixing space too.
I ended up giving the set I made to a little girl who was thrilled. So no loss there :)

I just bought the basic reeves sketching set and it comes in the same tin as the 12 cake watercolours with 3 mixing wells in the lid. So the sketching items can go elsewhere and I can stick some watercolour pans into the tin and I will have a lovely little travel box with the iconic reeves logo.

Love your frugal travel palette! To prevent your gouache (or watercolor) from cracking you can mix in a drop of glycerin - especially helpful with Veridian and student grade watercolors. If you have shimmery eye shadows you can add gum arabic and a little glycerin and make your own shimmery paints - both of these tips are from Lindsay Weirich, the Frugal Crafter on RUclips.

I use eyeshadow palettes but I dig out the eyeshadow from the metal tubs and wash them , and fill them with paint...then there is no messing with glue beneath them, and they are quite nice to keep in the palette too.

You can save the metal pans, put magnets on them and use to make another pallette in a metal tin. You can use the eyeshadow to make art. I don't like the way it feels on my skin so I dont' wear makeup anymore.

    Here’s my method:
I buy a small wooden box at the dollar store
I divide spaces with thick cardboard
Fill em up with tube colours
    Tada
Btw it doesnt leak, if you have the right cardboard ofcourse.

  • @valasafantastic1055

Great stuff! I’ve been using tins from the dollar store, empty half and full pans (Amazon) and sticky back magnets from the dollar store. Some tins are sleek, close really well and even have white inner lids that are perfect as a mixing pallet. I’ve also been reusing tins other art supplies come in as pallets. This is a new idea to me! I don’t use makeup but next time I’m in a dollar store I’ll keep an eye out in case I find one that would make a perfect travel pallet.
Tight well closing tins with empty half/full pans work perfect for gouache btw! Also reactivate it ahead with a mist spray and it is easier to use, more opaque and the cracks vanish. Gouache varies brand by brand. Beware Holbein offer time they dry as a useless rock and will not reactivate! To counter this I add a touch of honey and have heard vegetable glycerin also works. Too much however makes the gouache become shiny loosing the beautiful matte quality. I highly recommend the HimI/Miya gouache as I find it not only works very well but the price is astonishing compared to other gouache!
What I have done I’ll recommend here is use makeup brushes for painting (I use for watercolour, gouache and acrylic paint). Having separate watercolour and acrylic brushes. Using watercolour for watercolour and/or gouache. Even the dollar store ones are amazing and are excellent to add to your brushes. They are great for special effects, soft gradients, blending, clouds, lifting softly and more! Stiffer makeup brushes really work amazing with gouache and allow incredible and easy perfect blending!
I’ve been commenting all over about makeup brushes LOL.
    Very fun video, thanks.

i have been using the same eyeshadow box for the past 2 years, i solved the mixing area by using glue spots and gluing in my sons old plastic ID face side down- it had a plain white back. the plastic card can be emoved to wash and stick it back in when dry. i must say though dividing the top to mixing wells is a great idea

One thing I have done with my travel palette is to stick 1/2 of a Derwent Inktense stick into an area where I couldn’t fit in any pans. This way, I have what amounts to a pan of waterproof sepia ink if I want to do a drawing (with my brush) and do a watercolor wash over it. I don’t have room in my palette, but I thought I would do the same with a 1/2 stick of Derwent white Inktense since This, too, is waterproof when dry and you can paint over it.

Some paints do crack because they do not have enough humectant in them. You can add a little vegetable glycerin an/or honey to them (I also add a small amount of Gum Arabic as well). This will not harm the paints nor the archival quality of them - some paints come with honey or some other humectant in them (e.g. M Graham)

I have a problem. I would often try to bring almost all of my art materials and pack them into my bag as much as possible. 36 color pencils? Suck it up, sketchbooks, he's coming with us! Five types of palette knives? I probably won't use them on the road anytime soon, but what the heck! Pens, get out of that pencil case, these knives will be stayin there! You sit at the outside pocket.
Heck, all of my brushes are on my bag.
How I worked into making it work is that, for one, my bag has that flap that lets you cover your main pocket and that flap is also a pocket. So that I don't have to be hassled to open the main pocket wuth each one of the art stuff, I put the essentials on the flap pocket and the outside pocket.
I think what happens is that, I'm afraid that if I just keep my stuff at a closed place, where I don't see them often, I would forget about them so this method of putting everything in a bag that is always with me kind of helps fix that. But in exchange, my bag is always full.
But I am trying to find a solution! For one, I'm going to try and limit my color pencils up to about 10-15 that I would bring around, sane with markers. The brushes stays with me though. I plan on doing a few paintings on the road (since I feel a road trip soon). As for paint... I think that is the reason I initially clicked on this video. But I got sidetracked and commented this.
Nice video, by the way. It was very helpful.

You didn't have to sand the top!!!!! Nail polish remover would have removed the logo easily without leaving a scratchy texture!

Shades Of Rad Doesn’t nail polish remover damage acrylics and cheap plastics? I think rubbing alcohol would be a safer way to go.

Nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol didn't work for me. I ended up sanding them, as well. : /

wouldnt it damage the watercolours to take them out of the tubes? if not then i can try it for sure

Watercolors are basically immortal......when they dry up they are still functional and that is exactly how many palletes are made....they put in wet watercolros (aka out of the tubes basically) and then wait for them to dry/harden....Thats basically how I saved a ton of money on my tubed watercolors because I just kept reusing the dry ones, lol

    Are they acrylic paints?

    • @JenniferCharleeArt
      @JenniferCharleeArt  6 лет назад

These are tube watercolors and only watercolor or maybe gouache would work for this, not acrylic

Jeanious Crafts this really only works for watercolor paints since acrylic with dry and can't be reactivated with water.
