PD: In the theatrical version, scenes like Thorin´s funeral, weren´t included in the footage. That was a real shame. We only saw these scenes in the extended version later.

The white gems that Thranduil wants back belonged to his wife, Legolas´ mother. I don´t know if I remember correctly but I believe he had the stones and wanted the dwarfs to make juwelry, there was a disputed about payment, I think Thorins grandfather got to greedy. That is the only reason that Thranduil wants them back, to have something that remembers him of his wife, not realising that part of his wife lives on in his son and is more important than some jewels. And in a way everything he does can be traced back to the loss of his wife and his grief.

Hate to break it to ya, but Dori was NOT the dwarf who wrote in the Book of Mazarbul in Moria. It was Ori.
Or to be precise, of course many different dwarves wrote in that book, since it was a documentation of Balin's (and his followers') recolonization efforts in Moria.
But the last entry, which is read aloud by Gandalf in the books and in the Fellowship movie, was written by Ori.
Gimli recognizes his handwriting instantly, because he knew him to have a particularly nice and clear way of writing.

Legolas's footsteps are actaully depicted as being pretty feather like. In lotr trilogy when they walk through snow, he walks on top of it because hes practically weightless. When they're being consumed by the sea of skulls, he's stepping from skull to skull instead of pushing through them.

The mistake ppl make with the Desolation of Smaug is, it’s not supposed to be HIS movie 😂
It was only a couple of chapters in the book - there’s not much more that could be done w/a dragon.

Legolas running on those falling rocks is when I gave up on this movie lol.
The 2nd hobbit movie was my favorite despite the stupid add-ins like Tauriel (not a character from the book), because I think they did absolute justice to the scenes with Smaug. Lots of his lines were book accurate, followed by the 1st and then the 3rd last. Simply because I read the Hobbit book many times as a kid and the 3rd movie just kind of felt like mindless battle scenes in an attempt to pull a third movie out of it. Too much stuff added that wasn't in the book.
The first 2 Hobbit movies were truer to the original book. Just my take.

    • @Taewills
      @Taewills 2 месяца назад +2

I really liked the 2nd movie too. Personally the first dragged for me, but I also hadn’t been thrilled with that part of the book. Example: Bilbo/Gollum’s riddle battle felt so unnecessary but Tolkien expanded so much on it & fans really enjoy it so ofc they’d put it in the movie 😭
I prefer the battle scene in the 3rd movie I hated how Tolkien just knocked Bilbo out & skipped over it.
The worms were admittedly too much haha but everything else I appreciated.

@@Taewills I see your point and respect your opinion. 3rd movie in my opinion just didn’t feel like Tolkien, but more like a Hollywood action
Blockbuster. 2 hours of pure CGI battle scenes took away the immersion for me.
Tolkien skipped over the battle of the five armies in the book because he’s a WW1 vet and was not particularly fond of war. His stories focus on the adventure and the characters more than the action, which is what makes them so special to me

If you don’t compare it to that, which is a completely unfair thing to do for any movie, these are great! Tolkien wrote that the Battle of the Five Armies had a lasting impact on Middle Earth. So many orcs and their allies were killed that a lifetime later during the events of "The Lord of the Rings", the orcs and goblins of the north could not repopulate their numbers sufficient to take the Lonely Mountain, though there was still another fierce battle that claimed Dain and also Bard's grandson. Had they been at full strength, they would have easily swept aside the allies of the north, and come south to join the assault on Gondor, guaranteeing a victory. So, in a way, with the Ring and some of the later characters present, the Battle of the Five Armies was the first great battle of the War of the Ring, making possible the much-later victory at Pelennor Fields in front of the White City.

Time for a deep cut. During the War of the Ring Sauron did not one the armies of the north reinforcing Gondor so he sent Orcs and Easterlings to attack Murkwood, Erebor and Dale all at once. The men of Dale under the command of King Brand Bard's grandson were pushed out of Dale to the gates of Erebor. There King Brand was killed felled by orcs and the forces of Sauron attempted to take his body to defile it as was their way. They found this no easy task however as standing over Brands body was Dain Ironfoot King under the Mountain who was by this time 252 years old elderly for dwarves. Gandalf even admitted he was surprised the old dwarf could still lift his hammer much less swing it. But Dain stood there with his hammer defending his friends body until at last he to was slain. But this was not in vain as the Ring was destroyed and Sauron defeated. Dain's son Thorin Stonehelm becomes King under the Mountain. It was said though it wasn't quiet clear when in the timeline either Thorin Stonehelm's son or one of his grandchildren would be named Durin the Seventh or Durin the Last and fulfill the Dwarves greatest prophecy. With their forefather reincarnated he lead the Dwarves to retake Kazad'dum and the Dwarves with friendship with both men and the remaining elves (inspired by a certain elf and dwarf) who had not gone West yet lived out one last golden age until they faded from Middle Earth. (Also Thranduil telling Legolas to go find Aragorn makes no sense, at this point in time Aragorn is 10 being raised in Rivendell.)

Y'all are great company for this watchalong; I'm gonna go into serious withdrawals now that this is over, sniff sniff, lol.
I think I just got really spoilt watching LOTR when it first came out... the theatrical cuts were absolutely perfect for what they were. I wouldn't take away or want to add a minute of what I saw while in a theatre. And then the extended cuts come out and they were absolutely perfect for what they were, to be watched in the comfort of one's own home, scenes could be longer and breathe and definitely bring on the additional moments that just add to the world-building (but weren't necessarily pertinent in the theatre). Heck you could add another hour and I would barely blink. I mean, in the dictionary the word Peter Jackson was synonymous with extended-cut. Then The Hobbit comes out... I remember sitting in the theatre feeling like it was just dragging on, feeling like so much could have been omitted (like, for every two "get out of my pantry", you could have had it be said just once). The fact that the theatrical cut played out like an extended cut was too much. The home (extended) version is nice to sit back to and watch, but man... sometimes I really wish there was an 'actual' theatrical (short) version of the first two parts.
And yeah, I know there is some person's version out there...
Please try out Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow or even Valerian for some cheesy fun filmmaking.

fantastic - glad you enjoyed this one. Its worth noting that they pretty much had no written material to go off for this movie and likely a bunch of the 2nd one too (not sure). But as a film its such a hoot and i enjoy this trilogy as much as the LOTR original trilogy.
However i haven't seen this extended edition where Alfred ends up in the mouth of the beast... and the dwarves on that vehicle and Killi sharpening his sword on the wheel - so much extra cool stuff!
Only thing i thought was missing was that oliphaunt moment in the return of the king... i expected those worms to rock up and it be hell on earth at one point! Maybe even the dwarves releasing a Balrog even to take it on because they're all so outmatched... who knows - might have been cool.
But yeah overall good fun - lots of great characters. Alot of my age group (I'm 48) find this trilogy garbage and hate it... so its good to see a younger generation enjoying it and getting alot of value from it :)
