William s Castles autobiography states how the crowds went wild over Joan every time she appeared at a movie house over a ten day tour for Strait Jacket and played to packed houses with Dororthy kilgalen introducing Joan no one threw popcorn at her!
In reality, Joan had a huge financial stake in the picture so probably didn't mind doing promotion in theatres...in fact, she probably quite enjoyed it.
Although Bette Davis was not as bad, both actresses were criticized for taking any and every crappy role toward the end of their careers, usually alongside no name actors on made for TV movies. In the miniseries "Feud", Bette's agent reminds her that Katherine Hepburn would never do such a thing. It was either highly rated big screen productions or nothing at all. I do not believe Kate ever did a single TV role.
@@nassauguy48Katharine Hepburn did TV over the years, but mostly in her later career. She did TV movies like Love Among the Ruins (1975), The Corn Is Green (1979), Laura Lansing Slept Here (1988), and One Christmas (1994), among others.
I loved 'Feud', but they got this dead wrong. Joan relished her promotional work for that movie, apparently. She was in the limelight again, and this time, sans Bette Davis stealing so much of the focus. She loved doing sh*t like this, she basked in it. It was actually a very well-publicized event, even Dorothy Kilgallen covered and was involved in it personally.
Theres a LOT of factual errors in this series which really bothers me. Didnt they think that many viewers would pick up on this? Crawford and Davis fans know their facts.
"Feud" was more of gay man's fantasy about what he wanted the conflict between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford to be, non stop scheming and cat fights, but it hardly was every like that between Joan and Bette. They were professionals.
Glad to give this video it's 700th thumbs up! I nearly flipped (1960's jargon) when I saw John Waters. This is the kind of stuff he loves and writes and talks about. He must have had a fantastic time making this scene.
Of the post Baby Jane movies that she did--this is by far my favorite [the second is {William Castle's} "I Saw What You Did!" Good associative performance by Jessica Lange.
Jim Buchelt: I fully agree. Critics have unfairly maligned this movie. It was obviously intended to be over-the-top and sensationalistic. The fact is, Joan Crawford and Diane Baker gave excellent performances in it. When I first saw it, at about the age of thirteen, I found it quite suspenseful. When it was released on DVD, I bought it without a moment’s hesitation. The scenes of Joan Crawford knitting like a madwoman and coming on to her daughter’s boyfriend are absolutely priceless.
I love how the show redid the commercial for the film shot for shot! When I first saw it on Feud, I thought it was dramatized, but no....this is exactly how the film was pitched to audiences. It’s hilarious how over the top it is...”CAROL AND MICHAEL ARE GOING TO BE MARRIED!...and NOBODY IS GOING TO STOP IT!!”
This is what I hate about FEUD. Too much creative license. I can't imagine the audience throwing popcorn at Joan Crawford. Had she been treated this way should would never have worked with William Castle again. She enjoyed this tour
I thoroughly enjoyed Jessica Lange's portrayal of JC in this mini-series. She's truly a legend. However, I can't help but imagine how amazing Faye Dunaway would have been, say, if she was 30-40 years younger, and cast in this part, as opposed to Mommy Dearest.
They even managed to work in Diane Baker as a minor character--one of my favorite actresses and vintage lady crushes. The actress playing her is physically a reasonably good match too. Cool!
This is one of those scenes where Ryan Murphy was portraying more of an American Horror Story, exaggerated, and campy version of the truth. This was certainly not how she was treated during this time, although it was said by critics that she was “obviously settling for roles”.
I don’t quite see any other actress who could play Bette Davis than Susan Sarandon but indeed, Jessica Lange is not convincing at all neither does she resemble Joan Crawford at all. The hair and make up are no help either.
How degrading for Joan to walk down the aisles of a movie theater waving a ax around. While the crowd threw popcorn at her that look on her face tells it all.🤦🏻♀️
@@bryanr87 Yea, the old studio system back then treated female movie stars horribly when they began to age. The talent was still there, but they did not want 'mature' looking actresses. It was okay for men though. Look at stars like Cary Grant. He was still starring in roles when he was like 60.
@@retroguy9494 totally. I think its still very much the same for women. Once they've gone through "the change of life", the world sees them as dried up and useless. Not trying to make a political statement, but sometimes I wonder if that's one of the reasons why Hillary lost back in '16.
I love this sequence and John Waters portraying William Castle, but I fast forward every time the scene in the theater comes up. I just cringe and feel embarrassed for Joan.
I don't begrudge aging female actors for taking "lesser" roles as they age. They enjoy working and do us a great service by doing so. Joan Collins was once the highest paid female actor with her primetime television role as "Alexis" on "Dynasty" and worked on the daytime soap, "The Guiding Light." Desperation? No. Dedication. And for those who bemoan Joan's horror movie roles, don't forget that "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" made her a millionaire all over again, back when a million was still a million, and exactly when she needed it.
Lange portrayed Lucille, the real person behind Joan Crawford. There was Crawford, the movie star, and then there was lucille, the real woman- vulnerable.
I have empathy for her. She was screwed by male Hollywood executives because she aged, just like the rest of us. But in her case, the cliff was higher to fall.
Highly fictionalized scene. Crawford never entered through the audience swinging an axe, and she had a ball on the promotional tour, thrilled at all the adulation she received.
Imagine having starred in “Sadie McKee” “Mildred Pierce” “Grand Hotel” and “Possessed” to be reduced to this and “Trog”? Must have definitely felt pretty awful for Joan
There was another movie in which Joan played a traveling circus owner in England. She is the suspect in a series of murders of circus employees, but it turns out to be her daughter. Yet again. Just a cheap remake of Strait Jacket. Were these movies in which the daughters turn out to be the villains a shade at Christina?
In reality she is reported to have loved doing the promotional work for Strait-Jacket because it put her in the spotlight again. She had fun without taking herself too seriously.
Relax! Remember, this was written just for her, she had a blast no one dare be respectful when she entered a room. She always demanded security along with her Vodka!

Several of the other cast members in the film, despite not being well known (though George Kennedy would later gain fame), admitted to not wanting to be associated with the movie for fear of ruining their careers. The same applied for "Berserk!" and "Trog". 🤣
This scene is so sad for her in a way. A queen reduced to a clown. Wielding the axe but looking so... sad. Wanting to walk out to adoring fans with dignity, but reduced to little more than a haunted house attraction. Say what you will of who she was. But this had to have hurt .
Oh God, did she really do that with the axe? Talk about desperation. Toward the end, she was taking campy role after campy role. I will never forget the publicity shot for the movie Trog. As a result, she simply does not resemble Joan enough to allow the viewer to suspend his or her disbelief.
