It would be great if you would just get a normal drum kit for me to play David. I get it...you're beard is more manly. You don't have to rub it in by making me play wee drum sets all the time...
This video perfectly demonstrates why I feel that all the hype about "exotic" wood shells is bunk. Its good heads, good tuning, decent mics, a proper recording environment and strong playing that can make ANY kit sound great.
Agreed the only thing I have noticed with the higher end gear is you have more consistency from drum to drum regarding bearing edge and hardware is better, and due to that they will tune easier and more quickly as well as stay in tune longer.
100% I'm with you. I've used budget drum sets on many a gig and session...as have all of the session giants in Nashville. It's what you do with what you have.
I got a “First Act” kit for my son a few years back. Not one of those plastic ones, but similar to this kit. After watching some of your vids (like this one), I replaced the heads and symbols and it actually sounds pretty good now. Thanks for the ideas!
Didn’t Metallica do something kinda similar with the Justice album? Someone said they loosely taped a bunch of coins to the head to act kinda like a snare... not sure if it’s true, just heard it from a drummer somewhere
@@madaxe79 its not to be like a snare, its an old trick where you tape quarters to the batter head where the beaters hit, and it makes it sound clicky-er, sorta like a triggered kick sound but not really. vinny paul used this trick alot too i think
Stephen really brings out your fun side, I like it, you guys make a good video together, chemistry flows naturally. Well done. I'm heading over to Stephens channel to watch the other viddy. Peace!
Okay the metal section at the end is a VERY nice breath of fresh air - I could see a kit like this being really compelling for smaller studios or travel kits to minimize how much you have to move for gigs. If my wife (all towering four feet-nine inches of her) ever wants to learn how to play drums, I'm using this video as a blueprint. That kick was surprisingly meaty... all around a great video
The metal track was right up that modern metal alley with both the music (sounds like it could be a Loathe track tbh hehe) and the drum sound (kinda like OG Sleep Token or Jinjer with that cranked snare)
The fact that earthworks mics magnify the small imperfections in drums, and make good sounding drums sound so natural, but bad sounding drums awful, this video blows my mind! The drums sound so much better than expected!
Both of you have such different playing styles I love it. Stephen has such an energetic style, whereas Dave is a lot more groove-oriented, and a killer pocket player!
6:18 lol, the part where Stephen cut you off with a spacebar was unexpected. ngl I would actually like you to do the full song like that, haven't heard you play drums like that before, when you started playing like that I went like "OMG, David plays marching style?!" We need more marching style rDavidr in the future ngl
i dont know why but this is like the 4th time ive watched this. i love ur collabs with Stephen. if you do it again i would love to see u do this again with another kit.
I have drums that have been dumped in the desert One is a cheap five lug Tom that actually sounds pretty good Cheap shells or junk stuff can actually be made to sound good with a bit of effort and some good heads
Bass drum and floor Tom sound great! That little Mapex snare packs a punch too! The rack toms sounded a bit ‘plastic-y’ to me if that makes any sense, but as usual you’ve managed to make another cheap kit sound far better than it has any right to 🤣 excellent content and some really tasty playing from both of you!
I'm in the middle of cleaning and vinyl wrapping a kids kit too! It has a 14" kick so I had to find longer legs and I managed to 3d print a bass drum riser, waiting on a black hydraulic for the batter
kids drumsets are a great source of cheap drums. I've got one of those 14" kick drums set up as a rack tom on my kit and it sounds better than the 12" rack tom that came with the real kit
The best duo ever Love you guys and your channels you guys are so underrated you have all of my respect and you are so creative! Don’t let anyone tell you what diy video you can’t make😂 Thank you so much for the inspiring content bro fist if you respond that would make my year 💯❤️
Where were you guys when I got my kids drumset 20 years ago. I had plastic heads and one cymbal stand sticking out the bass drum lmao. I made a boom cymbal stand out of 2 broom sticks and I made a mini China out of the cymbal that came with the kit by stepping on the bell and turning it inside out 😂
What would you add to this kit to make it even better? 👀

China cymbal, or maybe just one of those kangs, like a splash version of a china.
Take the two small drums off of marching quads and slap em up front
add a pair of 6" pvc octobans of varying length...
A kid drummer?
@@potassiumchloride2542 We are kids at heart lol
i´ve waited my entire life to see these two play metal
your day has come!
Boom.
OMG Both of you answered😭😭😭
Best das of my life haha
Those beats were more punk than metal the last breakdown was more metal though
@@zacbass1636 punk beats are used VERY often in metal

Hey Steve.
🤣
You played those drums like a red-headed stepchild.
😂😂😂😂
your
That snare is disgustingly crisp. I love it
And that kick drum had a good, solid thud.

So DW's are way over priced?
Well yeah, if you're using mics and recording equipment. You can make buckets sound amazing
@@andys3035 Yes.
I haven't even watched the video yet but I think it's a great video.
9:19 The bell of death gets me everytime
Lol
Nothin like waking up to a rdavidr vid
🤘
Same here, I live in Australia so it’s 6am when I’m watching this
Like the aggressiveness. Some Meshuggah on the kit would be hilarious. More cymbals please!!
both of you seemed to really have fun playing that metal part :D
9:35 bueno 👌🏼👌🏼

Dam, leave it up to you and Stephen to make this kid drum set sound better than my lundwig. 😂😂 awesome video thanks for the laughs
Thanks Rick!
Day 6 of asking Dave to turn a bass drum into a snare drum
That'd take a lot of snares...
Didn’t Metallica do something kinda similar with the Justice album? Someone said they loosely taped a bunch of coins to the head to act kinda like a snare... not sure if it’s true, just heard it from a drummer somewhere
@@madaxe79 its not to be like a snare, its an old trick where you tape quarters to the batter head where the beaters hit, and it makes it sound clicky-er, sorta like a triggered kick sound but not really. vinny paul used this trick alot too i think

thats a great idea
5:10 Yeah those bubbles really came out a treat!1
Super easy! Barely an inconvenience!1
My 4 year old daughter heard the words "barbie doll" and watched till the end. Now she's singing twinkle twinkle little star lol
Thats awesome! haha
For real though, the snare kills on that punk/metal riff.

Proof that some good heads, great mics, and talented drummers can make any kit sound great.
The fact that earthworks mics magnify the small imperfections in drums, and make good sounding drums sound so natural, but bad sounding drums awful, this video blows my mind! The drums sound so much better than expected!
That was a great video. You work well together and are both funny. Love how the kids set sounds. Laughed the whole time.
You guys work so well together, you could have your own channel.
Hmmmm...
When it comes to your collab vids, you and Stephen is my favorite. You two killin' it everytime.
Thanks!

Yo Steven plays a nice New Orleans groove
Thank you my friend. Miss living in that city
I picked that track since I knew he would kill it!
Terrific job! The snare sounds shockingly good.
That's because it wasn't the one that came that kids drum set.
9:19 That death bell.

Loved the hardcore stuf at the end.
Fantastic. Absolutely marvelous
Absolutely had fun... You're awesome

the toms were the star of this kit for sure

That fill at 7:05😩
on the metal track, the drums gives it a cool early 2000's sound I love it
The kit sounds really good 👌
Cute couple! You guys should doing crafting more!
I love the sound of that snare.
You are really giving me inspiration to do this to my jr CB drum set from when i was little. Ever since the first mini drum vid.

On the bright side, the snare and cymbals sounded good.
I love smaller drum sizes, cymbals too, small heavy ones are my favourite. That kit would great for me
Double pedals on that beast! Do it! Loved the video. It sounded pretty dang good actually
We actually were considering it...
I got a Stephen Taylor ad while watching this
That floor tom sounded great!
How about a shell-less drum kit test? That might be cool.
8:17 this is where the deal begins! Hi-octane kickass!

Haha I thought do too
Dude, i'm in love with that kit
Fuck yeah, guys! This is what RUclips is for! Fantastically entertaining video!! Much love to you both.
That snare drum abs floor Tom are godly!
I would love if a drummer brought this kit in to my studio. Hell, I would prefer the Child’s Drumset over half the drummers sets I’ve seen in studio.
Your collaborations are the best!
Thanks!
Dude the mixing with that hardcore rock to the twinkle twinkle little star was amazing
Harnessing your inner Stanton Moore there at 6:54 Steven?
Such an awesome little kit!!
And then you set in on fire, right!?!?!? RIGHT?!?!?! Hahaha! Awesome vid, drum brothers!!!
haha we debated it
GREATEST ENDING EVER!!!!!! Through my beats audio... the mix was perfect!!!!!!
Okay that was awesome, the beat your collab and the ending with the kids song!
Very Nice .. lol .. very original ... Good job guys , awesome vídeo !!!
Damn that sweet ride sounds pretty good as a crash
thats because its a crash lol
That "Smash the bell and ring the like button" moment made me laugh more than it probably should've 😂
Dang.. yall went all Bozzio on that metal part. haha... loved the vid my guy 🤘
Awesome sound editing! Damn!
Wow what an awesome compilation video. Made me laugh out loud. Great job guys.
Maybe you can try making a "Rope Tension Drumset". I think that would be an awesome concept. Real calf skin heads with rope tension.
I love how i can tell they enjoyed filming this
Your groove-metal chops would make any prog metal band proud, David!
Epic upload! Great seeing you guys having fun with it :)
