those blocks on the river i've seen been used to break and dissipate waves in harbors and beaches, although i'm not sure about their purpose in such a quiet place as that river. in addition to their being so sparsely distributed, when they are normally piled together; that's how they work, the wave crashes against the blocks and flows through the holes between them while losing energy.

Hi Cruise. I watched this video on the big screen yesterday, and loved it. That is one beautiful trail, but there were some areas of transition that would have got me turned around 😊. We spoke before about folding bikes, and they would be a good idea, as you mentioned for traveling. One thing I forgot to tell you about the Brompton. If you have the appropriate bag attached to the front, you can fold the bike in such way that you are able to wheel it around the store like a grocery cart. If you find a Brompton dealer in your area, ask them to show you that feature. I'm sure Thuong would love that idea. Anyway, all the best on what you decide. Mahalo for the video.
41:30 those things are used to dampen then strength of the waves on cost and hence prevent erosion because of the lesser strength hitting the real rocks. usually used in huge numbers along costal lines. idk why middle of the river. sry if I am wrong but this is what I know. also found your channel yesterday. been watching so many of your videos ONLY for the last 24+ hrs. subscribed and bell turned on to all. ssssooooooo good content. thank you for the videos and wholesome Thoung chan moments across all videos
This is great, I never heard of that route, Japanese tourist authorities seem to like to keep their bike routes private! It reminds me a lot of the 4 Rivers route (Seoul to Busan), the same kind of landscape and bike wide tracks along the rivers. Its nice to see that the Japanese are finally getting their act together with good long distance routes. By the way, those concrete blocks you mentioned by the river are tetrapods, they are the standard pre-cast units used in Japan for coastal erosion control and (allegedly) construction corruption right through the country. The ones in the middle of the river were probably washed away from flood works upriver.
I found out about from an old cycling tourism brochure I picked up at an old work event. Otherwise, I don't think they are marketed very well, especially to foreigners. Thanks for the info about the tetrapods, I thought they might of just been washed away from somewhere upstream.
The English name for the fruit is Persimmon. Yum. Very common near where I live. Great Video - thank you. As someone who has ridden all over Japan (and other countries), on a folding bike many times (Tern and Brompton), the Brompton is worth it. The easy fold up and compact/simple transport of Brompton makes a HUGE difference. The Birdy bikes are also very good but not as easy to transport on trains etc. Brompton is very simple (especially if you have a rack that has wheels on it). Good luggage options as well. Feel free to chat with me if you do want to know more. I have years of experience on folding bikes.
@@TwoWheelCruise both good choices. Budget is the big difference. I did use Tern and enjoyed that option, but, I did change to Brompton for a few reasons. Never looked back.
That was a cool tour.I'm envious! For some reason, the train companies here in NC will not sell or donate their unused lines for rail trails. I hope that changes. Have to travel 1 1/2 hours north to Va to ride the nearest one.. but so worth it!

Folding bike will change your life! You should definitely check them out. I have a Brompton and a Bike Friday. I think the Brompton is better for commuting, quickly taking on/off trains or buses, but BF is better for touring and travel. I also like the 20 inch wheels a lot more, they make a huge difference. Asia has tons of interesting 20 inch folding bikes, so I'd go the cheaper route especially if it is mostly just for travel and touring.

@@TwoWheelCruise I like the gravel too but I wouldn’t choose it every time. We definitely need paved options for routes in between towns so you can choose which one you want. And I don’t generally see families out cycling on rough gravel paths. So it’s really limiting that I think.
