Started doing judo recently after years of training like a beginner-intermediate powerlifter (without a coach), and I realized how much my conditioning sucked. Our coach has us do 15 minutes of hard conditioning before we drill our techniques and by the end of our training session, I am on the floor trying to suck in every cubic millimeter of air that my lungs can. I absolutely hate it but I now know how necessary it is if I want to get better. The coach is fast and explosive even after multiple rounds with his students who range from white belts to black.

Brian, thank you for all the videos you have dropped for us. This video especially has gotten me back into stop being a lazy ass and do REAL "I hate my life" conditioning after my workouts. Being a powerlifter we often use cardio/conditioning as a excuse to "hurting" our gains. But in reality it helps with overall strength and health. Being a former football & basketball player it brought a lot of nostalgia from high school and college. Thank you Brian for all the "wake up calls" and knowledge bombs! You're awesome

I do them with a trap bar with a 50 ft path, and I just go back and forth. If your gym allows it, you should just take some dumbells or a trap bar and do them outside of the gym.

Rewatching this video to give me ideas. I'm that guy that hates conditioning. It's been 4 years since I did serious strength and conditioning, and now that I'm in my early 50's, I suck big time. It was apparent on a hiking/camping trip October 2016 when a "Hill of Death" humbled/embarrassed me. I've been reworking my novice strength gains for the past few months and as of a week ago am now focused on conditioning until the next hiking/camping trip in a few weeks (same hill, same demons). Been using your channel for inspiration and yes.... after some tabata rows, 5K rows, kettlebell cardio, and squat thrusters, I can agree that the mental part might be the hard part (that feeling of breathing through a straw ain't fun). No where but up from here! Keep up the good work! Love this channel!

I loved that short but straight to the point speech you gave at the end. I am only 17 and am still learning about how to prepare for the adult world. Like most teenagers, we are afraid and stressed about the steps we have to take. But the one line that struck me was: "And if you're not living on that sharp edge, just living on that line all the time...you're probably just taking up space." As human beings, we all enjoy feeling appreciated and being important. But if we don't learn to appreciate the necessary hard work, we will lose the respect of ourselves and from the others who surround us.
Brian Alsruhe, I'm glad I found your channel through your feature in Omar Isuf's video. I love the collaboration between RUclipsrs, as it has helped our audience find many great channels, like yours. I can really see your channel being big in the future, as it helps many of the fresh mind. Thank you Brian Alsruhe! I hope you you continue making great content!

Once again you've given everyone lots to think about. Each of us has to pick a goal and devise a plan to get there. Mine was not competition but more fuctional everyday strength. I wish some of 5his practical, safe advice had been available in my day. But hey I was able to move 1ton safes and other crazy heavy equipment and push 1,500lbs up a ramp. All of that for a monthly paycheck.

HA!.... HA!... No wonder only the dedicated come to this channel. YOU ARE ASKING THEM TO PUT OUT! (Navy Seal expression, bet you knew that). I have a "2017 New training list" of vids i am compiling. This is going on it. I am staying a powerlfiter, but doing nothing but conditioning and hypertrophy in 2017, with the once a month max heavy day thrown in. Time to chase 220 lbs bw. high reps, 60-75% of1RM until i get that 220. This is a great vid, man. Makes so much sense to get a good sweat going. I have been amateur hour for quite some time as far as warming up. I see so many guys just doing a lil something and getting right to it, but that don't make it right.. I do a lot of mobility, but time to step up the program. Time to get that conditioning hell going. Thanks, Big Dog. All the best. KILL EM AT NATIONALS B.A.!!!

The rant at the end reminded me of this poem, for anyone interested:
    LONDON
    By William Blake
I wander thro' each charter'd street,
Near where the charter'd Thames does flow.
And mark in every face I meet
Marks of weakness, marks of woe.
In every cry of every Man,
In every Infants cry of fear,
In every voice: in every ban,
    The mind-forg'd manacles I hear
    How the Chimney-sweepers cry
    Every blackning Church appalls,
    And the hapless Soldiers sigh
Runs in blood down Palace walls
But most thro' midnight streets I hear
    How the youthful Harlots curse
    Blasts the new-born Infants tear
And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse

Maybe my favourite video from you so far. Conditioning is awesome and necessary. I only started lifting about 6 months ago, but have run and done HIIT type stuff for years. First couple of months of lifting i was warned off running or anything high intensity, and it sucked. Everyday stuff started feeling harder and I could feel my lungs protesting! Went to try out a new gym a couple of weeks ago and the guy doing my assessment actually laughed at me when I said I was following a powerlifting type programme, but also still want to improve my conditioning. Hahaha so many people in the Powerlifting and Strongman world are pretty closed minded about this...But i keep telling them that a new breed of athlete is coming. This is one thing I actually feel i am ahead of the curve on...Maybe the only thing...

True words. I hated PT in the corps, but it was just part of the suck. Pushing to the point of exhaustion will reveal your second tank. Thats when the real shit happens, your mind controls the pain threshold. Conditioning and warmup is a big deal, i rushed my warm up last week, now my back is all out of wack. Wake up barely able to move until later in the day. Happens every time i do not warm up properly, you'd think i would learn my now. As you say though, you just have to push through it.

I did this conditioning big time. I went too crazy as a matter of fact. what I did was about 11-12 hours of training every day for 2 months. I worked as an unloader unloading tons of freight at a very high pace for 8 hours. before I went to work though I did Insanity workout and OMG that was hard. then I put on a 45lb vest and walked to work which was a 3 mile walk. also keep in mind I live in Kentucky/West Virginia so it was very hilly. after my work I would run home every night and even timed myself. my typical day started with insanity about 2 pm and then walk to work which took a while to walk 3 miles up hills in a vest. clock on at 4 work until 1am and run home. also not there is this very steep hill that I ran that some cars couldn't even drive up and it lasted a while. this is what slowed my time down. by the end of the second month my 3 mile run up hills without the vest was 16 minutes and 45 seconds. that hill killed my time. I lost 70lbs in those two months but it was due to me being crazy with that training. I quit doing it and I tried to jog the 3 miles again just 2 weeks later and my conditioning fell 5 times faster than I could gain it. I do also have before and after photos. it took me months to gain the weight back. I'm lifting now and trying to lose weight alot slower this time lol. anyway I do know a thing or two about pushing yourself. I wrestled in hs and played football which bred my mentality to push so hard, on the plus side while I was going through that crazy time I always had tons of energy and never hardly got tired.

yea I know it isn't the biggest feat but I did take a ton of effort. you have a ton of conditioning you have been doing for years and I think that takes an entirely different type of mental toughness

Hey, Brian! My wife and I have really been enjoying your content and style of presentation lately (we got here by way of both Alan and Omar, btw). We've both been lifting for about a year now, and we both wish we'd discovered how great it is many years ago (I'm 47, she's 53). We were wondering whether you might have any ideas for conditioning for someone with nervous system disorders; my wife has MS, and lifting heavy has done wonders for her. But being female and post-menopausal and on some medications that tend to depress the metabolism, body composition is a challenge for her. She's making progress, but it's slow; we're sold on the usefulness of conditioning. Problem is, for her, vigorous activity can bring on vertigo, minor muscle spasms, and a lack of mental clarity. Those symptoms will clear up in a day or so, especially after lifting, but are better avoided. Further, with a knee replacement, the impact of jumping is just too painful, and pretty much verboten anyway. She's very positive and damn near unstoppable, but this one has us a bit stumped. We're just hoping there might be something we haven't thought to try yet. Sorry to be so long-winded, but -- well, I'm just like that. We absolutely love what you're doing with your channel. Thanks so much!

Agree with the pre-workout conditioning brotha. I pretty much just do box jumps and kb swings for lower body days as my conditioning. I really don't do any core movements though. I follow it up with some dynamic movements and then a couple of actual warmup sets before hitting my actual load.

Preaching to the quire. I can't compete anymore but I still box. The way I see it theres no use being strong if you aren't functional and fit. Too many guys who are fairly strong in the gym who think they're indestructible because of it and I'd just love to see the shock on their faces if they actually had to fight for more than 30 seconds lol.

i AGREE 100% I wrestled in high school, and i never knew what conditioning was until i got a taste of that shit. it carried over into my 20's, 30's and now into my 40's I know the absolute value of keeping the heart and blood tubing strong.

    • @skipeveryday7282
      @skipeveryday7282 8 лет назад +2

Anything related to combat will push you to your limits that's for sure. I guess anyone who's had a taste of that like us or like Brian with his huge amount of experience in BJJ can't help but always be mindful of stamina. Plus it's extra important for me to do my cardio. I've had my aortic valve replaced. So it's just as well I realise it's importance.

Ross Catto keep pushing hard, man. There are still a lot of guys and gals out there who don't play pattycake with it. Brian's post tonight let me know just how much of a milktoast i have been lately. I want to drop from 330 to 220 in about a year and a half. i will have to take on the hell conditioning, lots of sets and reps and keep the weight to about 60-75% of my strength level for every rep of every training session. I will also have to go to bed hungrier than i would like, but that is what people who are serious about it do no matter who they are for the most part. Keep up the good work and i salute you!

I totally agree with you guys. It amazes me how people are afraid of big guys. Big guys grow on tress and most of them can't move. I'd rather fight a heavyweight guy who is super strong and slow than an athletic 205 guy. People see muscles and think that means danger...But it couldn't be further from the truth. Muscle takes up oxygen to move. Which makes you tired. If you get tired in a fight. You lose.

I've said this on your videos before, but I'll say it again. Giant sets WORK! Can I do them with the intensity that Brian does them? Not yet, I can't (I've only been training for five months). But I see some level improvement every time I go to the gym. And not only do you get stronger physically, but when you get that mental satisfaction of, "Holy shit, I just did all that and survived", you can't wait to get back the next night and see what happens (at least that's how I feel)!

Brian Alsruhe I'm not big on taking classes, having said that I've taken a couple here and there , spin class with my kids, now Shock class, because I was bored and figured if I'm going to be up at 5am anyways , why not? It's definitely a positive addition.... good point on PT tests, warmup and cool downs are usually taken so serious in morning PT, it is kind of weird they wouldn't have a time hacked warm up for a PT test as well. Probably ties in with the "inopportune" moment scenario.
